Wireless Communications: Homework 2

1) The document is a homework assignment on wireless communications that contains 8 problems. The problems cover topics like Rayleigh and exponential distributions, power delay profiles, delay spread, Doppler spread, and diversity techniques. 2) Problem 1 asks to prove properties of Gaussian random variables and their relationship to Rayleigh and exponential distributions. Problem 2 calculates power outage probabilities for a Rayleigh fading channel. 3) Problems 3-5 calculate mean and RMS delay spreads for different power delay profiles, and find the maximum symbol rate before intersymbol interference occurs. 4) Problems 6 calculates the time separation needed between signal samples for independence given a Doppler spread. 5) Problems 7 calculates bit error probability

Homework 2

 Solving problems with (**) are bonus and not mandatory

1. Prove that for 𝑋 and 𝑌 independent zero-mean Gaussian random variables with variance 𝜎 2 , the
distribution of 𝑍 = √𝑋 2 + 𝑌 2 is Rayleigh-distributed and the distribution of 𝑍 2 is exponentially-
distributed.

2. Assume a Rayleigh fading channel with the average signal power 2𝜎 2 = −80 𝑑𝐵𝑚. What is the
power outage probability of this channel relative to the threshold 𝑃𝑜 = −95 𝑑𝐵𝑚? How about
the probability 𝑃𝑜 = −90 𝑑𝐵𝑚?

3. The Local average power delay profile in a particular environment is

3
10−6
𝑅𝑐 (𝜏) = ∑ 𝛿(𝜏 − 10−6 𝑛)
2𝑛2 + 1
𝑛=0

a) Sketch the power delay profile of the channel.

b) What is the average delay spread?
c) What is the RMS delay spread of the channel?
d) If a binary digital modulated signal with a bit rate of 2 Megabits per second is applied to the
channel, will the modulation undergo flat or frequency selective fading? Explain your answer.

4. The power delay spectrum is often modeled as having a one-sided exponential distribution:

1 −𝜏/𝑇̅
𝐴𝑐 (𝜏) = 𝑒 𝑚 𝜏≥0
𝑇̅𝑚

Show that the average delay spread is µ 𝑇𝑚 = 𝑇̅𝑚 and find the RMS delay spread.
5. Consider a wideband channel with multipath intensity profile

−𝜏/0.00001
𝐴𝑐 (𝜏) = {𝑒 0 ≤ 𝜏 ≤ 20 𝜇𝑠𝑒𝑐
0 else

Find the mean and RMS delay spreads of the channel and find the maximum symbol rate such
that a linearly modulated signal transmitted through this channel does not experience ISI.

Hint: To avoid ISI we require linear modulation to have a symbol period 𝑇𝑠 that is large relative
to 𝜎𝑇𝑚 . You can consider it as 𝑇𝑠 > 10𝜎𝑇𝑚 .

6. For a channel with Doppler spread 𝐵𝑑 = 80 𝐻𝑧, what time separation is required in samples
of the received signal such that the samples are approximately independent.

7. Consider an AWGN channel with N-branch diversity combining and 𝛾𝑖 = 10 𝑑𝐵 per branch.
Assume MQAM modulation with 𝑀 = 4 and the approximation 𝑃𝑏 = 0.2𝑒 −1.5𝛾/(𝑀−1) for bit
error probability, where 𝛾 is the received SNR.

a) Find 𝑃𝑏 for 𝑁 = 1.

b) Find 𝑁 so that under MRC, 𝑃𝑏 < 10−6 .

8. Consider a case of MISO (diversity in transmitter) where each branch of receiver is multiplied
by a specific weight 𝛼𝑖 . We assume the transmitting power is limited (∑𝑖|𝛼𝑖 |2 = 1) , and
transmitter knows the channel gains (channel side information in transmitter CSIT). Find the
optimal values of 𝛼𝑖 for achieving maximum SNR in receiver.
