What is a pure substance? What is a mixture?

A pure substance is a single substance not mixed with A mixture consists of two or more substances that are
anything else. not chemically combined together
E.g. Pure gold (Element) (e.g. Water + sand à mixture)
Water (compound)

Mixing is a physical combination, it means it can be

separated without any chemical reaction.

Separation techniques:

1. Solid-liquid Mixture - Decanting 2.Solid – Liquid Mixture – Filtration

-Separates an insoluble solid from a liquid by pouring - Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from the
off the liquid from the container carefully. solid-liquid mixture.
- Requires a piece of filter paper

Think of it : Will you drink a water (water + Residue

sand) after decanting? Why? (Solid)
Filtrate
(Liquid)
3.Solid-Liquid Mixtures: Evaporation 4. Solid-Liquid Mixtures: Crystallization
- It is used to separate dissolved solids (e.g. 在化学里面,热的饱和溶液冷却后,溶质以晶体的形式析出,这一过程叫
Salts) from a solution. 结晶。
-This method is used for separating dissolved solids
from a solution where solutes would decompose upon
direct heating.
e.g. Sugar à(heat) carbon + water.

E.g. Sugar cannot be separated by evaporation of

sugar solution since sugar decomposes (breaks down
into simpler substances)
A solute which dissolves completely in a solvent
cannot be separated using filtration.
5. Simple Distillation – separate a mixture of 6. Fractional Distillation – separate miscible
solid-liquid liquid-liquid mixture
-Simple distillation separates a pure liquid from a -Separate a mixture of miscible liquids with
solution different boiling points.
*Evaporation – To get salt
e.g. ethanol and water
Boiling and condensation are involved. The liquid with the lowest boiling point will enter

be separated escapes as vapour.
àThe vapour is cooled and condensed into a liquid
celled distillate which is the pure liquid.

7. Separate Immiscible liquids- Oil and water 8.Solid-solid Mixtures: Sublimation

(by using separating funnel) (Solid to gas, without going through liquid state)

-Sublimation is used to separate a mixture of solids,

one of which sublimes.

9.Magnetic separation
-To separate magnetic materials (e.g. iron, nickel)
from non-magnetic materials using a magnet.

10. Sieving
-A sieve with small holes is used. The sieve allows
small flour particles to pass through, but not large
particles that have clumped together.
-Oil and water form two separate layers. The
liquid with a higher density(water) forms the
lower layer.
