1. Figure 1 shows the flow net of the sheet pile. The soil is homogenous and isotropic and
the coefficient of permeability is 3 x 10-5 m/s. The specific gravity and the void ratio of
the soil are 2.65 and 0.85 respectively.
(a) Calculate Factor safety in term of piping or boiling (Fpiping).
(b) Calculate the flow rate, q around the sheet pile.
(c) Determine the porewater pressure at point B, M, N, P, R and E.
(d) Determine the force acting on the sheet pile at the upstream side below the ground
surface.

a) Nf = 5, Nd = 13, H = 6-0.75 = 5.25m so, h= 5.25/13 = 0.4 m

3. A retaining wall was constructed to support a saturated soil as shown in Figure 2. From
site investigation report, the cohesion (c) and friction angle are 25 kN/m 2 and 0
respectively. The ground water table is located far from the ground surface. Determine
the following values:
(a) The maximum depth of a tensile crack
(b) The force (Pa) before the tensile crack occurs
(c) The force (Pa) after the tensile crack occurs
(d) The force (Pa) if the water table raised to 2 m below the ground surface at the back
of the retaining wall..
