PRS Componet Guidelines

The document provides guidelines for assessing the PRS component of the Industrial Engineering course ME-404. It outlines that 10 marks will be based on practical exercises conducted online or in the lab, while the remaining 5 marks will come from an online viva voce. Four sample practical exercises are provided related to job scheduling, statistical process control charts, and reliability analysis of engineering systems. The exercises require decoding variable data using roll number digits and applying theoretical principles and software tools.

Guidelines for Assessment of PRS (15 marks) Component
Subject Code: ME-404, Course Title: Industrial Engineering

1. Out of 15 marks, assessment of 10 marks may be based on practical exercises conducted

in laboboraty and/or conducted through online submission.
2. Remaining 05 marks assessment may be based on online viva-voce through Skype/Google
meeting/Whatsapp video calling or any other online mode.
3. Some of the practical exercised are given for reference. These exercises need to be solved
using the theatrical principles and also results to be verified using any available softwares.
4. A pdf file containing scanned images of working and screen shot of each window of the
software based solution to be submitted through e-mail.

Practical Exercises
Note: To attempt the following exercises, variable data point is to be decoded with the help
following description.
X= H+T+U and R=HTU, where H, T and U are hundreds, tens and units place digits
respectively of your Roll number’s last three digits.

Exercise-I:

The information regarding job is to be scheduled through one machine is given below.

i) What is the first come, first served (FCFS) schedule?
ii) What is the shortest processing time schedule?
iii) What is the slack time (STR) schedule?
iv) What is the earliest due date (EDD) schedule?
v) What are the mean flow times for each of the schedules above?

Exercise-II:

15 samples of size 4 each were drawn and the following measurements were made:

Determine the control limits for x bar chart and R- chart and draw these charts. Also, comment on
the process. Take A2=0.729, D3=0 and D4 =2.282 for n= 4.
Exercise-III:

A nationwide mail order house desires to verify the accuracy of its clerical work in completing
invoices. Subgroups of 200 are taken each day for 30 consecutive days for inspection. A defective
is defined as an invoice containing at last one of a number of possible errors. The numbers of
defectives found in each of these 30 groups are as follows:

Construct an appropriate control chart of the data and comment on the state of control.

Exercise-IV:

Find the system reliability for a mission time of 3000 hours the configuration shown in Fig. 1

The distribution for failure behavior of each component is depicted by the alphabet used in each
component i.e. E for Exponential, W for Weibull, N for Normal and LN for Log Normal.
Distribution parameters to be used are as follows:
1
For Exponential:  
R  1000

 1000 X if X 5

For Exponential: β= 1.5,   200 X  20 if 5  X  10
100 X  50 if X  10

For Normal: μ= 1000+R, σ= 20

For Log-Normal: s=0.2, tmed=5000+R
