William Morris (1834-1896)
artist, poet, utopian socialist
and designer who opposed
mass production techniques
and advocated craft based
production. A leading
member of the influential
British Arts and Crafts
movement.
Chair designed by Ernest
Gimson (1864-1919)
• Deutscher Werkbund (DWB established 1907)
• Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, it
sought to improve the quality of German design
in industry.
• Founded in Munich it brought together designers,
writers, architects and manufacturers.
• A central concern of the DWB was
standardization and the application of
progressive, modern design to mass produced
goods.

Peter Behrens (1868-1940) artistic

consultant to the German electrical
manufacturer AEG from 1907-1914. The
first designer to project a corporate identity
for industry, designing buildings, products,
showrooms and publicity material .
Frank Pick (1878-1941) as

combination of architecture,
graphic design and commercial
art to establish a strong

recognisable brand
Studied engineering at
Stanford University before
joining his father’s coach-
building business. Originally
a designer of customised
cars for Hollywood
celebrities he joined GM in
in 1925 as a designer. The
1927 Cadillac La Salle was
the first mass produced car
designed by a stylist.

Harley J Earl (1893-1969)

• Earl became the first head of GM’s Art and Colour Section
in 1927 which later became the Styling Section. The
Section grew from a staff of 50 to more than 1,000 by the
time of his retirement in 1959.

• Earl was closely linked to the idea of the annual model

change of cars, using such styling features as massive
chrome radiator grilles, sweeping tail fins and brake light
clusters – all excessive and symbolic of the USA’s post-
Second World War material affluence.

• He also produced designs for concept or ‘dream’ cars –

too costly to produce but inspirational in terms of later
developments - such as the 1938 Buick Y Job. Became
vice-president of GM in 1940.
