Architecture introduction
Architecture is both process and the product of planning, designing and constructing buildings or any
other structures. Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are often perceived as cultural
symbols and as work of art. Architects are licensed professionals trained in the art and science of
building design who develop the concepts for structures and turn those concepts into images and
plans.
Architecture - The art and science of designing and constructing buildings.
Architects - specialists in designing structures.
Factors to consider in building a house
1. Setting (geography) - The place or type of surroundings where something is positioned.
2. Climate - the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.
3. Availability of Resources - The availability of basic needs within the vicinity.

Roman Architecture
o One of the early architectural developments was the use of the “post-and-
lintel” method.

o Post-and-Lintel Method - is a building system where strong horizontal elements


are held up by strong vertical elements with large spaces between them.

o The Romans developed a variation of post and lintel construction with the
arch, which added stability and support.

Key Developments
Arch - The arch was a purely Roman invention. An arch is often made up of
small stones called voussoir and a large central stone called a keystone .

Collonade and Arcade


A series of columns is called a colonnade.
A series of arches is called an arcade.

Vault Dome
The arch, vault, and dome are variations of the same concept that allowed for greater
height and more space inside a building.

Philippine Architecture
History and culture of a specific area are reflected in its architectural heritage.

Cave - A natural chamber or a series of chambers in the side of a hill or cliff.

Primitive Hut - Made up of tree branches . Protect from rain and heat of the sun

Spanish Period
During three hundred thirty years of Spanish colonialization, the Philippine architecture was
dominated by the Spanish influences. The Augustinian friars, along with other religious orders, built a
large number of grand churches and cathedrals all over the Philippine Islands. During this period the
traditional Filipino Bahay na bató (Filipino for "stone house") style for the large houses emerged.
These were large houses built of stone and wood combining Filipino, Spanish and Chinese style
elements.

American Period
The American tradition in Philippine architecture covers the
period from 1898 to the present, and encompasses all
architectural styles, such as the European styles, which came into
the Philippines during the American colonial period. This tradition
is represented by churches, schoolhouses, hospitals, government
office buildings, commercial office buildings, department stores,
hotels, movie houses, theaters, clubhouses, supermarkets, sports
facilities, bridges, malls, and high-rise buildings.

Technological advances
In the field of architecture an architectural plan is a design and
