Build a swimming pool with concrete blocks

Simple and quick to assemble, the hollow blocks to fill with concrete are covered
with a waterproofing coating, which ensures a natural finish. With a wide wooden
beach, the pool thus built welcomes the whole family as soon as the weather arrives!

Difficulty - Cost - Time - Equipment

Difficulty: 3/4
Cost: € 25,000 (basin, filtration system, technical room and wooden area of 55 m 2 )
Time: approximately 2 months
Equipment:
Bubble level
Large metal

Massette
Serrejoints,
Ligatureur d ''
Large plastering knife
Pliers,
Radial saw
Drill / screwdriver
Wheelbarrow
Concrete mixerPlasterspraying
machine (rental)
Small tubular scaffolding…
The creation of a swimming pool cannot be improvised. Wall material (reinforced concrete,
shuttering, concrete blocks, etc.), basin finish (liner, coating, tiling, etc.), water treatment
system (ozone, salt electrolysis, etc.): constructive solutions, and technical options and are
numerous.

Cement mixer
Concrete: to deliver or to prepare
On this site, the basin (8 x 4 x D. 1.60 m) is made up of concrete blocks to fill with
concrete. Simple and quick to assemble, they are coated with a waterproofing coating for
swimming pools (Sika, Parexlanko, PRB, etc.).
Ready to use, the coating ensures both waterproofing and finishing. Its implementation by
projection must be very rigorous.
Note that the water line gets dirty quickly, a tiled frieze, glued to the plaster, can facilitate
maintenance.
If we work in pairs, and depending on the size of the basin, the delivery of ready-mixed
concrete (BPE) by mixer truck and pump truck remains an effective solution. Certainly more
expensive, it is very practical if you want to save time.

All the stages of creating a swimming pool, from earthwork

to raft ...
Any work of this type begins with the delimitation of the perimeter of the basin with a line,
followed by tracing with an aerosol bomb.
The depth of the excavation (dug with a mini-excavator) must be determined at the laser
level with respect to a point 0, in order to maintain the same finished height during the
works.

After the earthwork, the reinforcement placed at the bottom of the excavation consists of
two layers of lattice welded to vertical bars, on which the slab (slab) is poured.

The technical room (8 m 2 ) is here adjacent to the basin. Its installation facilitates its
realization and avoids the purchase of a powerful pump.
The “roof” of the room is at the same level as the top of the pool, which allows the laying of
a wide, homogeneous wooden beach (here 55 m 2). To find out if the project requires a
building permit or a simple prior declaration of work (our site), you must inquire with the
town hall.
Several criteria come into play: basin area, location in relation to the buried network, in the
vicinity, etc.

You must also complete and file in the town hall a declaration of the opening of the site,
then a declaration attesting the completion and compliance of the work.
Finally, any construction of swimming pool must be declared to the tax authorities (within 3
months of its completion) for the reassessment of the property tax.
1 Wall mounting

 The bungs are sealed and caulked.

 The vertical bars (Ø 8 mm) staggered every 20 cm are
welded to the trellis.

 The concrete slab is poured (28 cm thick). After drying

(28 days), arrange your blocks.

 Thread the blocks on the vertical bars.

 The installation is done dry, with offset joints.
 Check the flatness (cord) and the plumb (bubble level).

 For each row, a horizontal chain consists of 2 irons (Ø 8

mm), tied to the vertical irons in place.
 As you go, insert Ø 8 mm twists in the continuity of the
vertical chaining.
 At each angle, "cross" the blocks to ensure a solid bond.
 Using a mallet, remove the concrete tabs.
 Regularly check level and plumb.

 The penultimate row receives the blocks cut with a grinder for the discharge nozzles
and the skimmers, placed in a 2 cm projection.
 The last row installed, make the peripheral formwork: the planks (exceeding the
blocks by 5 cm) are held in place by clamps.

 With one less block of concrete blocks, the technical room walls are ready to receive
beams, slabs and finishing slabs.
 Provide an opening for the door and make the formwork (leveling and door panel).

2 Pouring concrete into the cells of the shuttering blocks

 Pour the concrete (dosed at 350 kg / m3) mixed with the concrete mixer.
 Start at an angle to distribute it well and continue filling with a bucket until the last
row.
 Do not interrupt work during the filling phase: the concrete must be homogeneous.
 Work together to coordinate the concrete mixing and pouring operations.

 Place a horizontal chain (two Ø 8 mm concrete bars).

 If you do not use a vibrating needle to expel air bubbles, vibrate the concrete
regularly using a long cleat (or an iron).
 Finish pouring the concrete by distributing it evenly with a trowel, to the top of the
formwork.

 Then smooth the leveling surface with a ruler or a drop of cleat, resting on the
formwork.
 Proceed in the same way for the leveling of the technical room.
 The formwork also acts as a lintel.
 Smooth the concrete with the rule in the formwork of the door panel.
 Note that the room will be covered with a concrete slab poured over concrete beams
and slabs.

Info +

 To build the rounded staircase, add rubble and earth and form a slope of 45%.
 Seal a welded mesh on cement blocks, then form the formwork for the three steps
(here H. 38 cm) in bendable plywood.
 Pour concrete.
 Take off after drying (28 days).

3 Connection of basin maintenance equipment

 Connect skimmers, delivery nozzles and broom plug by unrolling the pipes (supplied
with the filtration system), to the technical room.
 Fix them (outside side) with clamps.

 In the room, connect the skimmers to the sand filter and then this to the pump: it
discharges clean water to the discharge nozzles.
 The valves make it possible to reverse the suction by disconnecting the skimmers
when the brush plug is connected for cleaning.
 Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Do not immediately energize the installation.

4 Construction of the wooden swimming pool deck

 Make a concrete base (15 x 15 cm) depending on the location of the beach, allow to
dry (approximately 72 h.)

 Then fix  the joists on the terrace (center distance 50 cm) using metal brackets and
hammer pegs (or lag bolts).
 Cut the blades with a radial saw according to your layout.

 Screw the boards onto the joists using invisible decking clips. Regularly check the
flatness with the ruler and the spirit level.

5 Preparation and projection of the plaster in the basin

 Mix the waterproofing coating with water (according to the manufacturer's
instructions) in the concrete mixer, until a homogeneous mixture is obtained.

 Pour it into a wheelbarrow and let stand 5 min.

 Transfer it with a shovel to the mixing tank of your spraying machine (rental) .
 Switch on the machine to activate the pump.
 Apply a first coat of plaster (gobetis) 5 mm thick.

 Make sure to fill the edges with angles and work preferably in pairs in the basin, then
roughly float the gobetis using a brush.
 After drying (48 h), apply a second coat of plaster as before: move the nozzle so as
to obtain horizontal "strips" (2 cm thick maximum).

 Apply the plaster using a large metal ruler.

 Move it vertically for 1 m then work in the same way horizontally.

 Smooth the plaster with a large plastering knife.

 Operate with regular movements to obtain a uniform surface.
 Work in pairs: one projects, the other smooth.
 Project a new plaster pass at the wall / bottom junction of the basin.

 Spread a 20 cm wide strip on the floor with a square trowel, making sure to fill the
corners well.

And security?
The owner has opted for a motorized pool enclosure (Abrisud) which keeps the water warm
during the night.

Controlled by remote control, modules of the same width move on integrated slides.
They stack at the end of the pool (thanks to cams), clearing the edge of the pool.
Only the motorized trunk is attached to the deck (or the copings).
The motorized system can operate independently with a solar panel.
