Problem 10.

A convex octagon inscribed in a circle has four consecutive sides of length


3 and four consecutive sides of length 2. Find the area of the octagon.

Solution. Let r be the radius of the circumscribing circle. The radial lines from the center
of the circle to the vertices partition the octagon into 8 isosceles triangles, four with sides of
length r, r and 2 and four with sides r, r and 3. These eight triangles can be repositioned
make an octagon with alternating sides of length 2 and 3 as shown in the figure below.
The new octagon has the same area as the original √ octagon, and,√as illustrated below, can
be constructed by cutting the corners from (3 + 2 2)√× (3 + 2 2) square. Each of the
removed corners is an isosceles right triangle with side 2. Hence, the area of the octagon
is √ √
(3 + 2 2)2 − 4 · 1 = 13 + 12 2.
