Overview
Metropolitan Bank & Trust Company (Metrobank) was established on September 5, 1962
by a group of Filipino businessmen mainly to provide financial services to the Filipino-Chinese
community. Metrobank was one of Philippines' first banks to receive a universal banking license
issued by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in August 198. Metrobank's operations in the Philippines,
and mainly its domestic branch network, have grown and through a series of acquisitions and
mergers since its establishment with its first office located in Binondo, Manila. Following a 1993
shift to the BSP's policy of limiting the opening of additional branches of banks in the
Philippines, rapid expansion of the bank's domestic branch network happened. After the opening
of its first international branch in Taipei in 1975, Metrobank's international network of foreign
branches and representative offices has expanded, primarily in response to the increased volume
of remittances by OFWs [ CITATION Met14 \l 1033 ].
