Overview:
Welcome to your Arcadia University course, ED565 –
Introduction to Instructional Technology. The general focus of
the course is to introduce prospective teachers to classroom uses
of computers and technology. Students will use technology to
promote collaborative, interdisciplinary, and multi-level instruction;
students will construct these activities by using the following: wiki
software, word processor, spreadsheets, and presentation
software. All assignments will be introduced with the intent of
modeling integration into curricular areas.
The course will focus on theory as well as practice, and challenge
you through real-world problem-based scenarios. Please try to
make connections between what is taking place in your classroom
to the content being discussed. If you are not currently teaching, I
would like you to address issues as if you were actually teaching in
a classroom. The second part of the course will deal with obtaining
specific competencies with respect to technology applications.

Class participation, scholarship and academic honesty will have an effect

on the final evaluation. If you experience difficulty at any point in the class
(i.e. hardware problems), please notify me immediately. There will be no
extensions given for the due date of any project or assignment. I will
accept work late up to 3 days – 10% of the grade will be deducted per
day of lateness. This includes PBL activities as well as Discussion
Board postings. Conventional rules of plagiarism apply to all assignments.
Anyone caught plagiarizing will receive an "F" for the assignment and will
be subject to guidelines set forth by Graduate Studies. More than one
incidence of plagiarism will result in an "F" for the course and further
disciplinary actions.
The Online Aspect of this Course:
This course is being presented in an online fashion; It is important that you
login on a regular basis (daily if possible) and work on a consistent basis to
complete your requirements. Since we are not meeting face-to-face, it will
be imperative that you participate in the discussion forums by replying to the
postings of your classmates. Also, the Cyber Cafe is available for you to
develop community outside of the course content. You will need to be self-
motivated and try to stay as organized as possible; developing a schedule
would be a good idea. I also suggest that you login in the beginning of the
week and copy all assignments to a Word document. This will allow you to
construct a quality answer, spell check, grammar check, and copy and
paste into the forum.
Requirements for Discussion Board Sessions:
1. You are required to answer each question that is posted by the professor
in the Discussion Board area. Please make sure that you support your
comments with research from the field. Citations are to be provided at the
end of each post as well as within the body of your answer.
Example:
Within the context of the posting:
"Constructivism is an epistemology, a theory of knowledge
used to explain how we know what we know" (Lorsbach,
1997).
At the end of the posting:
Lorsbach, A. (1997). Constructivism as a Referent for
Science Teaching. Retrieved January 5, 2006, from
http://www.exploratorium.edu/IFI/resources/research/const
ructivism.html
2. You are required to respond to a minimum of three other student
postings. I will be looking at the way you analyze the postings and extend
the conversation. Please use this opportunity to share your own
experiences, but remember to support your assertions with current research
findings. At this level we can all learn a great deal by sharing our
experiences.
"Studies report that peer learning promotes greater
conceptual and procedural gains for students,
accommodates a broad range of learning styles, results in
greater enjoyment of the learning task, and encourages a
stronger persistence in learning" (Johnson & Johnson,
1999).

3. Your postings will be evaluated based upon the substantive

nature and how it efficiently addresses the question at hand.
Simple responses such as "I agree" are of no value and will not be
counted as an acceptable posting. Try to use what I call the "no
scroll" rule. If you have to scroll a great deal to read the posting, it
becomes an arduous task. Please try to be succinct and to the
point. Strive to respond at the synthesis or evaluation levels.
Discussion Etiquette
In this course, I welcome the creation of a dialogue that is open, thoughtful,
and founded on the basis of research in the field. At times, some of you will
not agree on the positions that are taken in the forum. This diversity is
welcomed. However, each student must exercise respect for the thoughts
and comments that are posted by their peers. If any posted comments are
inappropriate or of an offensive nature, they will be removed from the forum
and I will address the issue with the author of the content. Please follow the
following guidelines:
 Never post, transmit, promote, or distribute content that is known to be
illegal.
 Never post harassing, threatening, or embarrassing comments.
 If you disagree with someone, respond to the subject, not the person.
 Never post content that is harmful, abusive, racially, ethnically, or
religiously offensive, vulgar or otherwise potentially offensive.

Assignment 1: Create Your Own Wetpaint Wiki

This assignment, creating a Wetpaint Wiki, will be very important
for the remainder of this class. A Wiki is a piece of server
software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page
content using any Web browser very easily. As we go through
this semester, you will be required to create new pages on your
Wiki and add the work that you have created; in essence,
creating an electronic portfolio. To get a better understanding of
what a Wiki is, please click on the following link to view a
YouTube video on Wetpaint Wikis. View this additional video on
Wikis.

Follow the directions below to complete this assignment:

1. Watch the video tutorials on how to create your Wetpaint Wiki.
2. Follow the directions in the video tutorials to create your own
Wiki.
3. On the Home page, copy and paste the introduction that you
wrote for Unit 1. Add a picture of yourself.
4. After you have posted your Theoretical Foundations post in the
online course, create a new page on your Wiki, copy and paste
your Theoretical Foundations post on this new page. Add images
that might be appropriate.
5. Go to the "Invite" tab and invite me to your Wiki
([email protected]). You should also invite your
classmates.

Assignment 2: Technology Explorations

For this assignment, you will be working on your own, but it will
be very important for you to be reading the postings of all your
classmates. The initial idea of this unit...is for you to explore what
technologies are available for you to utilize in your classroom.
You will need to search the web, and or print materials to identify
tools for technology integration. These tools can be comprised of
both software and hardware or other technology devices that
would work as partners in the learning process (e.g. probes,
YouTube, etc.).
How should you go about completing this assignment?

1. Post you’re a MINIMUM of 3 technology ideas in this forum as

a new thread. Include the following:
1) the technology tool name
2) brief description (paragraph) of the technology tool
3) brief description of how this might be used in the
classroom

2. You will still need to read other students threads and post
responses to them (minimum of three).

 Why is this activity important?

In this course, we will be officially covering a few basic

technologies that are important for your classroom. However, this
does not mean that they are the only ones that you can utilize
during the creation of your solutions in future units. Therefore, I
hope that we will grow as a class as each student adds ideas to
the technology idea pool.

Assignment 2: Theoretical Foundations

This chapter deals with the topic of "What is Learning?" For many
of us, the way that we were taught is somewhat different today
than it was years ago. In the past, "the teacher was the sender of
a message (or information), and the student was the receiver of
the message" (Duffy, McDonald, & Mizell, 2006). The idea of
learning was a transfer of knowledge to the learner.
In this post, I would like you to look at the three major views of
learning, or epistemologies: behaviorism, cognitivism, and
constructivism. Give a brief summary of the beliefs of each
school of thought and its major contributors.
Reflect on how you were taught as a young student and compare
it to how you teach, or would teach if you are not practicing at this
point in time. Can you see distinct patterns that reflect the beliefs
of a specific epistemology, or are the lines blurred between
multiple schools of thought? How does technology figure into
your past and present experiences?

Due Dates can be found in the Assignments folder

of each unit.

Please remember to utilize outside resources in your solution:

journals, websites, etc. Please remember to also share your
personal experiences on this topic. Citations are required, so if
you don't remember the format, please check the syllabus or
