The Sudan crisis has not only shaped the modern Republic of Sudan but can also be attributed for
the creation of South Sudan- an independent country formed after its secession in 2011. Tracing its
roots to colonial times, the crisis was the culmination of factors that widened the north-south divide
and which ultimately resulted in three civil wars right after it gained its freedom in 1956. It is
difficult to say if this African country, with its diverse populace and rich resources, could have
averted the brutal civil wars which left millions affected over the course of time. The ruling
Government, which was majorly military for most of the time, didn’t or failed to prevent the
violence and instead participated in the same. The continued disregard and impoverishment of the
southern region of the country which was predominantly Christian and other ethnicity was also one
of the main factors for the outbreak of the civil wars. However, it was Omar al- Bashir, under whose
leadership, atrocities were committed and the Darfur crisis- started in 2003 and lasted till 2008.
This calls for an analysis as to how the country of Sudan reached this point and how there was a
violation of rights- mainly human rights and international humanitarian law and what made the
study of Sudan unique from the rest. The researcher, in this project, tried to understand the same and
carried out the research in an unbiased way.
