CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the introduction of the study, significance of

the study, statement of the problem, theoretical framework, conceptual

framework, operational definition of variables and scope and delimitation.

The researchers handle these components in order to explicate essentially

the rationale and the essence of the entire study.

INTRODUCTION
Technology has been existed since the first time of a person.

However, it's not just like the technology that's used today. Technology has

been developing over the years. Developers still innovate and build new

technologies for the development of one’s life. Technology is useful to

everyone because it should use in education, agriculture and business.

Furthermore, business owners use technology so as to level up their

business. in line with Vojinovic (2019) stated that tiny and medium business

handles technology aid enhances the business’ performance and remain

competitive.

Technologies are employed by the business owners so as to expand

their abilities and to help their customers. Business owners have the vision to

understand what the buyers want and to come back up with ways to fulfill

them. However, they have technology so as to perform a number of these

goals. it's challenging for a business to attain competitive advantage without

using technology (Ramey, 2012).

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

Business owners use technology as a part of their marketing

strategies so as to realize style of customers. The advancement of

technology and online selling are beneficial to entrepreneurs because it'll

make their work easier and quickly than traditional selling. Business owners

also use any social media platforms or develop applications that may assist

them to have interaction their customers in buying their products.

Technology isn't only touching on gadgets but also it's the employment

of internet. Because of invention of internet, entrepreneurs are able to start

their business through online. These entrepreneurs are able to gain a good

range of consumers because the products they're selling can see anytime

and anywhere by the buyers.

According to Sharrocks (2018), online business or electric business is

finished entirely online. Goods and services are advertised, viewed,

purchased and delivery is standardized once the order had been placed and

purchased. Often his quite business never touches or sees the products by

the shoppers because it was handed over and shipped by the manufacturer

of wholesaler.

There are digital natives who are using technology for the expansion

of their business and these entrepreneurs are able to assist their customers

from different places or countries. The employment of technology in

business could be a big help for them because it'll make things easier even

in delivering products worldwide. However, buyers should have lot of

patience in expecting the items they bought online.

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

Furthermore, these entrepreneurs aren't only selling product day to

day but they also experience many things while running their business.

Experience is that the process of getting things that happens to anyone.

during a business, it includes the struggles encountered by the digital native

entrepreneurs involving in online business.

In addition, customers have more trust with the normal business than

online business because there are many scammers all-round the internet.

Experience isn't only the instances happened during the vending of products

and also the service rendered but it's also the worth proposition. Folks that

claim to sell experiences infrequently recognize what it takes to actually to

try to do so. (Paranjape, 2019).

The researchers aim to reveal the experiences of digital native

entrepreneurs engage in online business. The researchers have chosen the

digital native entrepreneurs as their participants as they're those who

experiences lots of things while participating in online business. The

researchers also choose Mabuhay Homes 2000 so as to assist the

entrepreneurs in improving for his or her business.

This study aims know the circumstances of the digital native

entrepreneurs participating in online business. It focuses on the events faced

by the digital native entrepreneurs. This study also will discuss the marketing

strategies of the digital native entrepreneurs as this study will provide an

avenue to other entrepreneurs specifically digital native entrepreneurs in

starting their own online business. Because the researchers aim to

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to discover the experiences of digital native

entrepreneurs participating in online business. It seeks to answer the

following questions:

1. What are the things encountered by the digital native entrepreneurs

participating in online business?

2. How does the digital native entrepreneurs endure the struggles they

experienced?

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Digital native Engage with

entrepreneurs modern technology

Customers trust
through online
business

Figure 1.1

The impact of user characteristics on online trust formulated by

Christian Pieter Hoffman, Christoph Lutz and Miriam Meckel (2014) is the

theoretical foundation of this study. Previous research shows that online

confidence may be influenced by user features such as web experience and

demographics.
Mahonri Academy and Science High School

The researchers will explore the moderating effect of user

characteristics on online trust based on social cognitive theory. According

to the survey of German internet users, they differentiate it by age, web

experience and education. They call it as digital natives, digital

immigrants and naturalized digitals.

According to the survey of UK, digital natives are seen as the cause

of large changes in people’s ability to engage with technology. The theory

provides evidence that generation is only one of the predictors of advance

interaction with the internet. It says that by gaining skills and experience in

engaging with information and communication technologies. It is possible

for the adults to become digital natives, especially in the field of learning.

In the 21st century, students entering universities were defined

differently as digital natives, the millennial generation, or the net generation.

Other researchers discovered that significant researcher has taken place

around the world to evaluate the expertise, abilities, understanding and

intentions for which this group of people makes technology for them. This

theory says that it begins with a description and analysis of survey that

examined the knowledge, skills and understanding of students entering first-

year undergraduate studies at the University of Hong Kong. It follows by a

discussion of the potential impact this has for the design of learning

environments on higher education.

Based on a research, this generation is believed to have unique

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

characteristics and learning methods. It elaborates the perspective of the

department’s first-year English language student and letters in the use of

technology. Students were asked about their exposure and attitudes to a

wide

range of existing and emerging technologies using a questioner designed to

determine their digital nativity level. The results indicate that many students in

the first year are extremely tech-savvy. Nevertheless, there is considerable

variation in the experience of each student on the use of technologies and

resources.

The results are presented using the Digital Natives Theory of Prensky,

n.d., and the effects of using technology to support higher education teaching

and learning. The data published suggest that the students used intensively

for a variety of emerging technologies. Many respondents also said they

were using the tools and technology to help their research.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Figure 2.2
Mahonri Academy and Science High School

The figure above explicates the simplified process on how the

researchers come- up to the reliable and accurate result of the study. First,

the researchers purposively select the participants that can surely respond to

the objective of the study. The researchers chose the entrepreneurs

participating in online business. Second, the researchers will use naturalistic

interview and axial and open coding to reveal the desired themes.

As soon as the results are going to reveal, the researchers need to

interpret the data collected to determine what are the experiences of digital

native entrepreneurs participating in online business.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OR RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter shows the related studies, literatures and journals

collected by the researchers. The review of related literature widens the

thoughts and ideas of the study.

Experience and Perception of towards Online Business

These are the related literature and studies that were gathered by the

researchers. It contains the experiences of shoppers and entrepreneurs and

consumers’ perception toward online business.

According to Hajjli (2014) social media is providing new opportunities to

consumers to interact in social interaction on the web, consumers use social

media, like online communities to come up with content and to network with

other users. Social media has role within the development of e-commerce into

social come. Female are more into online shopping than male, online

businesses start to arise. Some people favor to shop online specially the

digital natives but “age thirty-five and above favor to shop traditionally because

they're less aware on technology.” (Gupta, 2015)

Furthermore, a study revealed that “online business offers such

entrepreneurs the chance to interrupt out of the highly competitive sectors

which they're traditionally associated.” (Anwar and Daniel, 2016)

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

Additionally, the employment of social media for business

development could be a good marketing strategy to grow or still function the

business. (Moray, 2017)

Moreover, supported the study of Gupta (2015), shopping may be

online or offline. She stated that the perception of price, quality, service and

threat strong affect perceived value and get intents within the offline and

online network. Furthermore, through the existence of technology,

businessmen come up with a brand new marketing strategy using social

media and online. There are many of us who are spending lots of your time on

internet, so online advertisement is extremely effective marketing strategy

(Sivanessan, 2017).

In addition, the study conducted by Lenjo (2017) suggested that despite

a narrow understanding of an entrepreneur’s opportunities in an exceedingly

Purchase Power Parity, it's supported by the government’s business

protection plans and is sustainable as an innovative venture thanks to its use

of recent technology applications and it isn’t about stockholders making

billions of dollars. It isn’t about corporate ownership. Social media is about

ordinary people taking the control of the planet around them and finding

creative new ways to bring their collective voices together to induce what they

need.

The use of social media is useful to business owners. Hence, they'll

attract more customers in buying their own products. Cox (2012) stated that
Mahonri Academy and Science High School

it's essential to perceive the employment of social media in small businesses

because this may assist them to possess a bigger number of shoppers, it'll be

convenient for them so as to possess an improved communication and

establish a decent relationship with the shoppers.

Furthermore, in line with the report by Manglinog (2018), online

shopping is continuously growing within the Philippines. A conducted study

showed that 9 out of 10 Filipinos preferred online shopping. It also revealed

that convenience, lower prices and special promotions are the first reasons

why Filipinos choose online shopping.

Furthermore, online shopping incorporates a compelling role in

recognizing the satisfaction of the shoppers. There are factors namely

convenience, low prices and wider selection of products (Hamza and

Saidalavi, 2014). Moreover, a study about the fluent online shopping

experience by Mosteller, Donthu and Eroglum (2014) revealed that the

perceptual fluency has been positive impacts on consumer’s cognitive and

affective process within the context of online shopping. It also stated that

perceptual fluency assists the consumers to differentiate the presentation of

online information as handful to soak up, view their thoughts and feelings

linked with the net task as more enjoyable and fewer effortful, it'll bring them to

possess a positive assessment to the stopping out comes.

However, Savander (2015) explained that monetization could be a lng

process, it doesn't use shortcuts. Savander concluded that circumstances

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

affect when internet ventured are ready to transfer from growth to

monetization. It contains the company’s resources, quality of the merchandise,

general market and industrial peers. in line with the study of Ghazali et al.

(2012), social media are still not widely used and trusted among small

business entrepreneurs in some countries because anyone who can enter, will

enter .The knowledge are often change which will affect the on to a business.

Furthermore, this study centers round the comprehension of social

conduct publically supporting networks with the knowledge from both plural

subject hypothesis (Gilbert, 2014) and dusty trust hypothesis (Morgan and

Chase, 2014). With the ascent and expansion of internet based life, new

developing large scale manufacturing strategies, as an example, publicly

supporting has significantly changed the way within which individuals

participate and group. In any case, drawing in holding a fundamental number

of donors is usually viewed because the first and also the most vital necessity

for the achievement of crowdsourcing.

A study by Lee, Ma, Wang and Zhou (2013) revealed that research

ethnic business has been growing quickly in the previous years, yet the status

of ethnic enterprise writing has got a little attention. They discovered the

center research subjects in the ethnic business enterprise writing in 1999-

2008. Contemporary ethnic business contemplates accumulated barely any

key research topics and their exploration foci change residence inquire about

on enclave financial aspects, ethnic undertakings and social embedded to look

into on migrant business people, settler systems and transitional business

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

people. It suggests that future research should consider including different

databases to cover increasingly ethnic business enterprise related

examination.

Social media has a good impact to the business, Hence, it opens a door to

businesses because of it enhance the better relationship between the

entrepreneurs and customers within the industry and improved the better

communication with the customers across the countries (Nair, 2017).

Synthesis

These studies were supported by the related studies about online

business. Online shopping is a manner of selling stuffs through the use of

online. There are lots of strategies that an entrepreneur can use in order to

have a large number of customers through online business. Additionally, the

researchers observe that online shopping is widely used by the current

generation. The trust from the customer is highly essential for the

entrepreneurs when it comes to the quality of their products.

It also shows that online business is more convenient than the

traditional business because of the easy access of the customers. They can

compare the prices of the same products of actual and online products.

However, many customers are still disappointed with the online business

because their expectations did not achieve by the sellers.

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

Digital Natives in Business

These are the related literatures that were collected by the researchers.

These literatures discuss the contributions of having digital natives in

business.

As stated by Mak and Shippers (2014), digital natives refer to the

people who are adept or familiar in using technology since their early

childhood. It is also stated that most of the digital natives own a phone and a

computer and spend their time in surfing the internet. Authors said that they

are attached to it since they use their electric gadgets continuously.

Furthermore, Redsicker (2012), “digital natives have influence, money

and decision-making power. They are used in sharing their opinions and

impressions of the companies and products even if that is negative or

positive.” Moreover, Entrepreneurship Development Centre London or EDCL

(2014) stated that it will be beneficial to an individual to specifically the young

generation needs to develop their digital skills because this will help them

acquire the digital skills needed in entrepreneurial field.

In addition, S. Snyder and M. Snyder (2019) explicate that the digital

natives are open minded when it comes to politics and different generation by

far. Hence, they are devoted in online, building digital networks and gathering

information about it.

According to Nintex (2017), digital natives are not only good at

operating technology but they also recognize how people’s lives are directly
Mahonri Academy and Science High School

affected by digital innovations. Thus, enterprises discovered many things form

digital native companies in order to prosper in the modern world.

Synthesis

Digital natives have big impact on the field of business. Mostly, people

who grew up in an era where technology is arising. Since they are familiar with

the use of technology, they use that opportunity to build a business that can

help their fellow digital natives to buy products without hassle.

In addition, through the use of their skills and knowledge with regards to

technology, they can start a business with a low capital.

Experiences and entrepreneurs’ perception

This topic deliberates the experiences and their perceptions regarding

business. It centers the decision making of the entrepreneurs in order to

satisfy their customers with their product.

In the study of Nguyen (2018), if you have more experience as an

entrepreneur, you make more investment than a beginner entrepreneur. In

that viewpoint, you'll not recognize new opportunities because you're just

relying on them. Furthermore, Tangier & Sefiani (2013), stated that

understanding the success of small business from the perspective of

entrepreneurs is a complicated and difficult challenge.

Moreover, based on the study Pawar (2014), the consumers undertake

a detailed evaluation to get a knowledge because of many brands who have

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

different quality as well as price. After you evaluate, combine all the

information for making a final purchase decision.

In addition, the researchers aim to provide a guide of normal and best

practices regarding educational plan substance and techniques for showing

business on the tertiary level, and to investigate how they connect with

rehearses prescribed by the pioneering learning field of research, so as to add

to extricating best practice. (Y. Gangi & F. Sirelkhatim, 2015).

However, In the study by Chen, Su-Chang (2012), collinearity test

changed into performed on impartial variables, consisting of personality traits,

entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial attitude, tolerance and VIF, and located

that they were all within the proper level. Since entrepreneurship and

entrepreneurial attitude isn't completely innate and they can be cultivated by

way of education.

Furthermore, the increment of purchaser observation on web based

shopping can prompt an expansion of procurement behavior. The specialists

propose to lead an examination contrasting the old age gatherings and more

youthful buyers in their recognition and buy conduct towards web based

shopping so the more extensive inclusion can be accomplished by the online

shops and consequently limit business openings (Altaque et.al, 2016).

This study centers around the connection between the promoting

methodologies of cost initiative and separation on firm execution explicitly

clients' satisfaction. This study utilized both subjective and quantitative

technique in gathering of data. Findings show that the IEC-EA items are
Mahonri Academy and Science High School

valuable (28.1%), high caliber (12.5%), powerful (9.4%) and dependable

(6.2%) shows not exactly 50% of the customers were fulfilled items. Moreover,

the delineation of items as incapable (21.9%), inconsistent, low quality and

overrate each at 6.2% shows the error on the client satisfaction (Wang’ondu,

2016).

Synthesis

The gathered related studies and literature shows that digital natives

are important in business. They bring can attract more customers because

they are familiar in using the technologies. Hence, it is easy for them to deal

with the customers and this will benefit the entrepreneurs, specifically the

digital natives, and the customer to have a better service.

Digital natives have their own perspective when it comes to business

field. They are one of the reasons why the companies lead to success. They

can manipulate a lot of things in business world especially dealing with the

technologies and internet.

Entrepreneur’s Attitude

This topic discusses certain factors that influence the attitude and

behavior of the entrepreneurs. It is stated below what are some specific

factors that affect the entrepreneur’s behavior and attitude.

According to the study of Chen and Su-Chang (2012) they state that

entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial attitude is not totally innate. Meaning, it's

not nature to us, it can be cultivated by education.

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

"External pressures and entrepreneur’s attitudes are the most

important predictors of environmental proactivity both for small and micro

firms." (Corsini, Gusmerottia, Iraldo, Passetti & Testa, 2015) Meaning, there

are external forces that can affect you as an individual and the two are the

most important factor for small and micro firms.

A book published by Schuster (2019) explained that behavioral

differences between managers and entrepreneurs contribute to the

comprehending regarding entrepreneurial marketing and the acceptance of

technology.

According to Sheth, Jain and Schultz (2019) that the consumers’

behavior depends on the 4P’s. This includes the product, price, place and

promotion. These factors are combined that distinguish the consumer’s

behavior buying products.

Synthesis

Altogether, there are a lot of factors that affects in entrepreneur’s’

attitude, it may be in online and traditional business. It is not only through

products that can identify the customers’ satisfaction in buying their products.

It also tells that customers’ satisfaction also depend on how the sellers assist

them.

Lastly, consumers are likely to buy products to the kind of

entrepreneurs who are friendly since they are easy to talk with the

clarifications or information of the product. Thus, entrepreneurs who are

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

grumpy don’t have enough customers because the customers don’t want to

communicate with them with that attitude.

Digital Business

These are the related literatures that were gathered by the researchers.

These literatures tackle the importance of digital business because of the

continuous innovation of technology.

Szajda (2013) stated that digital business is now essential in business

community because technology is now being part of the business as this helps

the entrepreneurs to produce, store and analyze important information in order

to achieve the competitive advance over peers. Digital business is beneficial

to business itself because it helps the business to establish bridges between

people. It affects basis of business functionally and regulate on how the

business is handles nowadays.

Moreover, entrepreneurs should be engaged with the new technology

because being left on technology causes entrepreneurs to relevance wherein

it shows that technologies will assist them to invest in large companies.

Technology will benefit the entrepreneurs to gain competitive edge over large

companies. In that way, entrepreneurs are able to look for new opportunities

for their business and keep up with larger companies (Muhammed, 2018).

Furthermore, Lopez (2014) rationalized that digital business is

collaboration between people and things. It is when things begin to cooperate

amongst themselves as well as people and business. With digital business,

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

things will be an instrument for the entrepreneurs. Hence, this will be a new

opportunity for the business.

Conferring to the article of Manila Standard (2019), entrepreneurs and

small business owners are starting to adopt the change with the new

technologies. Go Daddy Global Entrepreneurship Survey revealed that small

business owner who already runs a website is more sanguine. It also revealed

that sixty-six percent of them are supposed to grow by at least twenty-five

percent in the next three to five years. However, only fifty-three percent of

small business owners does not use website.

In addition, there are six steps in order to establish an effective digital

business as he stated that digital leaders should create the right mindset and

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter will discuss the procedures and methods that will be used

in gathering the essential data needed. This chapter contains the study’s

methodologies, research locale, population and sample, instruments, data

gathering procedure and data analysis.

METHODS AND TECHNIQUE USED

This study entitled Exploring the Experiences of Digital Native

Entrepreneurs participating in Online Business will use the basic qualitative

research wherein the researchers will investigate the experiences of the

participants. This method will be used in order to interpret the phenomena

occurring with the digital native entrepreneurs. Qualitative research is a

process of understanding based on the distinct methodological tradition that

discover a social or human problem. Using this type of research will allow the

researchers to create complex and holistic picture, state the detailed views of

participants and conduct the study in a natural setting (Creswell, 1997).

Furthermore, this study will use basic qualitative research design. This

approach was explained by Merriam (2009) as she stated that basic

qualitative research is a design that examines the experiences of the

participants and reveals value if the experiences or process. Hence, the

Researchers will use this design in order to evaluate and explain cautiously

the experiences of the participants engaging in online business.

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

RESEARCH LOCALE

The researcher will conduct the study at Mabuhay Homes 2000 since

that is the scope of the researcher’s study. The said locale was chosen

because there are digital native entrepreneurs and also because of the

phenomena existing in the locale.

This study will be conducted in Mabuhay Homes 2000 since the chosen

participants live there. The researchers chose Mabuhay Homes 2000 in

Dasmariñas, Cavite because there are many entrepreneurs who are using

technologies and engaged in online business.

POPULATION AND SAMPLE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to discover the experiences of digital native

entrepreneurs in Mabuhay Homes 2000 participating in online business.

Particularly, this study will use the purposive sampling as the sampling

technique. Purposive sampling is a non-probability sample that the

participants are chosen based on the characteristics of the population and the

intentions of the study (Crossman, 2019). Furthermore, this study will include

the participants who are qualified with the criterion set by the researchers

below.

1. Entrepreneurs who use technology in business.

2. Entrepreneurs who participate in online business more than 3 months.

3. 3.Entrepreneurs who experience different circumstances in online

business.
Mahonri Academy and Science High School

4. Entrepreneurs who are willing to participate.

INSTRUMENTS OF THE STUDY

In order to gather rich data that are needed in the entire study, the

researchers will employ interview in gathering primary data, specifically semi-

structured interviews. Semi-structured interview is a kind of interview that

contains prepared and unprepared questions. A definition given by Doyle

(2019), semi-structured interviews does not truly monitor the formalized list of

questions. The researchers will ask open-ended questions, making it more on

to discussion rather than a straightforward question and answer format.

Moreover, researcher will also use observation, specifically the

participant observation. Participant observation is a kind of observation that

lets the researchers involved themselves to their subject in order to order to

collect an ample amount of data from their participants (McLeod, 2015).

Additionally, researchers will use the mentioned instruments of the

study because it is applicable for the study to apply those instruments in order

to gather a sufficient data that will be collected from the participants.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

First, the researchers will ask permission from the authorities before

proceeding to the collection of data from the participants. The researchers will

construct a semi-structure interview guide to collect an indispensable data for

the growth of the entire study.

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

The next step is the research will conduct the study together with the

purposively chosen participants who will meet the set criterion. Subsequently,

the researchers will start the one-on-one semi-structured interview with the

participants where in the researcher will have a chance to ask the participants

about the following questions in order to get in-depth information. The

researchers will have an interview with the participant in a naturalistic manner

so the researchers are able to mobilize the genuineness of the data.

Lastly, when the data are done collecting, the researchers will focus on

the data analysis for the further investigation. The gathered data will be

examining by the researchers through open and axial coding.

DATA PROCESSING PROCEDURE

The researchers first gather data from the respondents and analyze the

perception of the participants to know what are the common experiences of

digital native entrepreneurs regarding their online business.

Secondly, the researchers combined all related experiences and

opinions regarding online business to fully understand the perceptions of the

respondents. In addition, the researchers will use open and axial coding in

order to understand all the perception of the participants regarding their

experiences on how they are convinced in using online business. According to

Creswell (2007) open Coding is generally the initial stage of Qualitative Data

Analysis. After completing the Open Coding, depending on the methodology

Mahonri Academy and Science High School

we use, we can do Axial Coding and Selective Coding while axial coding is

primarily to designate the manner in which links are made in new ways.

Lastly, the researchers organize or developed group of meanings from

the participants’ statements in order to put the overall critics and all the

significant information regarding the importance of digital native entrepreneurs

in using social media in online business.
