This document outlines a course on differential equations offered in the spring 2020 semester. The 3 credit hour course will explore using differential equations to model real-world systems like temperature, springs, circuits, population growth and cell motion. Students will learn tools to solve linear differential equations and qualitative methods for nonlinear equations. The course will be assessed through assignments, quizzes, a midterm and final exam. Learning outcomes include identifying different types of differential equations and solving methods, determining solutions given conditions, and analyzing real-world problems in fields like biology, chemistry and physics.

Course Outline Spring 2020

Course Differential Equations
Course Code MATH 241
Number of Credit hours (3+0)
Batch BSCS F18 B
Pre req Calculus and Analytical Geometry
Course Instructor Waqas Nazir
Course Introduction
Differential equations are the language of the models we use to describe the world around us. In this
mathematics course, we will explore temperature, spring systems, circuits, population growth, and biological
cell motion to illustrate how differential equations can be used to model nearly everything in the world
around us.
We will develop the mathematical tools needed to solve linear differential equations. In the case of nonlinear
differential equations, we will employ graphical methods and approximation to understand solutions.
Course Objectives
a) Use linear differential equations to model physical systems using the input / system response
paradigm.
b) Solve linear differential equations with constant coefficients.
c) Gain intuition for the behavior of a damped harmonic oscillator.
d) Understand solutions to nonlinear differential equations using qualitative methods.
