Quiz 1 Research Methodology

This document contains a quiz with two questions about data analysis and graphs. [1] The first question discusses the relationship between exercise and health, noting that a correlation coefficient cannot be greater than 1 and that a positive correlation only means the variables move in the same direction, not that one causes the other. [2] The second question asks about the appropriate types of graphs to use for different variables like gender, vehicle type, and speed when observing driving behavior. [3] It also asks about using the mean as the best measure of central tendency since it includes all values and any change affects the mean value.

Question 1

A health club recently conducted a study of its members and found a positive
relationship between exercise and health.

a) It was claimed that the correlation coefficient between the variables of exercise
and health was 1.25. What is wrong with this statement?

b) In addition, it was stated that this finding proved that an increase in exercise
increases health.

What is wrong with this statement?

Answers

(a) The problem with this statement is that the value of the coefficient is greater
than 1 which is not possible
(b) A negative coefficient implies that the variables move in the opposite
direction and positive coefficient implies that the variables move in same
direction. We cannot say that change in one variable will lead to a change in
the other. Therefore, a positive coefficient only means that health and
exercise move in the same direction.

Question 2

a) A researcher observes driving behavior on a roadway, noting the gender of the

drivers, the types of vehicles driven, and the speeds at which they are traveling.
The researcher wants to organize the data in graphs. Which type of graph should be
used to describe each variable?

1
b) What is the appropriate scale to measure center tendency of the results,(mean,
median, mode, etc.) and why?

Answers

(a) There are different types of graph like Bar-graph, Histogram and Frequency
Polygon
Bar –Graph use for the gender of the drivers, the types of vehicles driven
And Histogram and Frequency polygon both use for the speeds at which
drivers traveling because it is quantitative variable.

(b)Mean is the most appropriate to measure central tendency. Mostly preferred to

use, as the best measure of central tendency because the reason is

1. it is the measure that includes all the values in the data set for its
calculation
2. and any change in any of the scores will affect the value of the mean
