You don’t need to avoid junk food completely, but you shouldn’t eat too much of it, as it will
have negative effects on your health. Nutrient density is a very important concept when looking
at the difference between junk food and healthy food. A nutrient-dense food contains high
levels of essential nutrients per calories. If a food is high in fat or sugar, it is generally not
nutrient-dense. Grains, low-fat dairy products, seafood, poultry, and lean meat, are healthier
options. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains are complex carbohydrates and our
bodies’ best sources of energy. Highly processed foods contain simple carbohydrates, like
sugar, which are less beneficial to your health.
Choose two foods, one healthy and one not so healthy. Look at the nutrient labels or at
nutritional tables and answer the questions for each food:
Which food has the highest number of fat, carbohydrates, and sugar? How do you know?
Which food provides the most energy? How do you know?
Which food provides most nutrients? How do you know?
