Exercise in Descriptive Statistics

Directions: Part 1
Column A below contains a sample of observations of the number of online users of a large
academic library's online public-access catalog (OPAC) at 50 randomly determined times
over a 5-day period. You are to use tools available in Microsoft Excel to determine the
mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, and selected other measures using
this sample.

In order to obtain the specified sample statistics, you should use

Excel's Data-Analysis tools. To activate these, choose Tools→Add-Ins and click on the box
next to Analysis ToolPak. If this option is not available, you will need to add it to your Excel
installation. Use Excel Help to learn how to get the necessary additional files from your
Excel or Microsoft Office CD-ROM. The basic Analysis ToolPak (not the
Analysis ToolPak - VBA) is all you need for this exercise.

Once you have obtained the Data-Analysis tools, click on Tools→Data Analysis. Then
in the Data-Analysis popup, select Descriptive Statistics and click OK. Then in the
Descriptive Statistics popup, identify the Input Range holding the sample observations, and
and check the Summary statistics box. Excel will then open a new spreadsheet page in
which the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and range (along with some other
statistics) will be displayed. (Note: You may need to adjust the column widths in the results
page in order to display the results readably.)

Directions: Part 2
Columns C and D below represent one year's worth of weekly circulation totals for a small
public library. The librarian, who has spent a deal of effort during this year to sell to the
community the idea of using the library for meetings, informal classes, children's programs,
etc., has hoped that that effort would pay off in terms of increased circulation.

You are to use the circulation data below to form

a line chart of the weekly circulation totals To do this, you need simply to select the
column labeled "Circulation", from the label itself down through the data for Week 52. With
the label and the data selected, click on Insert→Chart→Line. Excel will offer you its default
line chart. Double-click on it, and then click on Finish. Excel will display a line chart based
on the weekly circulation data. When you have finished examining the chart, right-click on
the chart and select Copy. Then move to the worksheet where you have stored the output
from the Descriptive Statistics tool in Part 1 of this assignment, and paste the chart on to
this worksheet. Arrange the chart so that both it and the output from the Descriptive
Statistics tool are easily readable. Save this page of results as a Microsoft Excel
Workbook file, i.e., save it with the extension ".xls".
