Isometric Drawing: Beam & Column

Level: Intermediate

 Require good understanding of isometric projection.


 Apply COPY to complete object shape rather than draw lines.
 OFFSET is not applicable in ISODRAFT.

Objective

At the end of this session student should be able to draw object in isometric view using AutoCAD.

Column – Vertical structure

tf = 11

tw = 7

W = 203

H = 203

Beam – Horizontal structure

tf = 7

tw = 6

W = 133

H = 203
A short steel column with 1000 mm height

Instructions

1. Open a new file acadiso.dwt.


2. Turn on ISODRAFT and ORTHOMODE at status bar.

3. Under drop down arrow, there are 3 options for drafting. You will normally change the
isoplane direction. Use F5 on the key board to change the direction.
4. Start your drawing: Use isoplane top to complete the geometry of column in isometric.

5. Adding the height: Draw and copy line with 1000 mm as figure below.

6. Adding the bottom part: Copy from top.


7. Trim unnecessary lines to complete the view.

8. Continue with beam

Beam – Horizontal structure


tf = 7
tw = 6
W = 133
H = 203

9. Use isoplane right to complete as figure below.


Assemble beam and column

1. Copy column downward. Use isoplane left or top as figure below.

2. Specify first point at any point (nearby beam).


3. Specify second point at 4880 displacement.
4. Zoom out to see second column.
5. Move your previous beam next to 1st column. Use the correct midpoint (column & beam) to
connect beam to the top of column as figure below.

6. Repeat. Copy beam profile to second column (midpoint inner/upper side of column).
7. Complete the structure for beam as figure below.
8. Trim and delete hidden object to see a correct isometric view of beam and column
assembly.
9. Stretch the two column to add the actual height 6400. (to add 5400)
