ALGEBRA FUNCTIONS
Objectives:
1. Combining two or more functions 3. Solving Composite functions
2. Apply the four operations in solving functions
Content:
Let f and g be two functions defined as f(x) = x2+3x+2 and g(x) = x+2
find the ff: a. (f+g)(2) b. (f–g)(1) c. (f.g) (-1) d. (f/g) (3)
Solutions:
a. (f+g) (2) = f(2) =g(2) = (x2+3x+2) + (x+2)
= (22 +3(2) +2)+(2+2)
= (4 + 6 + 2)+ (4)
= 12 +4
= 16
b. =3 c. = 0 d. = 4
Practice Exercises:
Let f and g be two functions defined as f(x) = 2x2 – 3x + 5 and g(x) =x2-2 find
the ff:
1. (f+g)(2)
2. (f-g) (1)
3. (f.g)(o)
4. (f/g)(3)
What is a Composite Function?
A composite function is a function that depends on another function. A
composite function is created when one function is substituted into another function.
For example, f[g(x)] is the composite function that is formed when g(x) is substituted
for x in f(x), f[g(x)] is read as “f of g of x”. f[g(x)] can also be written as [f ο g](x) or
fg(x). In the composition [f ο g](x), the domain of f becomes g(x).
Suppose that f(x) = 3x+4 g(x)=2x-1
