PDA, Wireless Devices and CDSS

This document summarizes key points about nursing informatics and the use of personal digital assistants (PDAs) and wireless devices in clinical practice. It describes how PDAs can help nurses improve patient care by providing information at the point of care. It also outlines some of the key characteristics of wireless devices like WiFi compatibility and Bluetooth connectivity. Finally, it lists advantages like improved organization and access to patient information, and disadvantages such as data loss if the device is corrupted or stolen, of using wireless devices in clinical practice.

“NURSING INFORMATICS”

Chapter 9

1) Describe the utilization of personal digital assistant (PDA) in

clinical area.
In the clinical setting, nurses are often too busy to manage and organize their
time effectively and efficiently. Most likely, nurses want to document data as they
collect it, others like a method to track patients and etc, but the lack of time to look up
pertinent clinical information are often voiced by the nurses in clinical setting.
That is why PDA’s nowadays are being utilized in the clinical area. It helps the
nurse improve patient care by bringing information to the nurse at the point of care at
the moment that information is most needed, plus the nurse can carry it and is easily
fitted in palms and pocket. It is convenient, efficient and effective way in gathering data
and information and during patient care.

2) Describe the key characteristics of a wireless device.

For a computer to connect wirelessly there must be a physical component

added to the device to enable wireless communication. With the right card added to
the computer and the wireless local area network (WLAN), it is possible for a wirelessly
enabled desktop computer to connect through the over the air interface to a network.
Most common standard used for this is IEEE 802.11 that governs how local area
networks connect wirelessly using wireless fidelity (WiFi). Specific airwave GHz bands
have specific communication standards (IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11i).

A PDA typically communicates with the world through being plugged into a
desktop computer by the way of a cradle or a cable and synchronized, or through IrDA
wireless connections. PDAs providing e-mail and internet access typically using WiFi to
connect to WLAN. Bluetooth is an alternative standard.

3) List three advantages and three disadvantages of utilizing a

wireless device in clinical practice.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Organized and manage personal information If the PDA is infected with virus or is corrupted,
of the patient efficiently and with ease. all data will be lost.
Improved access to and management of Easily lost and stolen by other people
information.
Useful in keeping track or changes in patient Encryption and decryption takes too much
orders during rounds time.

Chapter 10

1) Describe effects of CDSS on clinician performance and patient

outcomes in healthcare.
The use of CDSS to find and prevent errors related to gaps between optimal and
actual practice can result in improved quality care. Applications of CDSS suggest the
ability to lessen the incidence of adverse drug events, nosocomial infections and the
inappropriate use of antibiotics. Prevention of prescription errors is seen as one of the
most valuable and widely used functions of CDSS. One researcher have determine the
effective clinical decision support depends on CDSS speed, anticipation of information
needs, real time delivery, usability, simplicity and the maintenance of the knowledge
based system. CDSS must be designed to support clinician requirements rather than
dictate clinician workflow practices and CDSS should actually help improve workflow.
