Gndec Assignment 2information Theory and

This document is an assignment on information theory and coding. It contains two questions. Question 1 asks the student to (a) determine the state diagram and draw the trellis diagram for a given convolution encoder, and (b) obtain the codeword for a given message signal using a cyclic encoder. Question 2 asks the student to (a) construct a convolution encoder given specific parameters and draw associated diagrams, and (b) draw encoder and decoder circuits, find the output for a message string, draw a state diagram, and explain the Viterbi algorithm for decoding, for a systematic rate 1/2 convolution code. The assignment aims to achieve the course outcome of developing advanced error coding techniques.

Q1. (a) Determine the state diagram for the convolution encoder shown in
figure (1). Draw the Trellis diagram through the first set of steady state
transitions. On the second Trellis diagram, show the termination of the Trellis to
all-zero state.
