What Is Air Conditioning

This document provides an overview of basic air conditioning systems. It discusses the working principle of vapor compression cycles using refrigerants. It describes the major components and classifications of air conditioning systems, including direct expansion, chilled water, packaged, split, and window unit systems. Key factors in equipment selection like heat load calculation, building type, and fresh air requirements are outlined. Common air conditioning equipment like air handling units, chillers, and heat recovery wheels are described. The document concludes with options for system optimization and references.

Air conditioning is defined as a process which cools (or
heats), cleans, circulates, freshens air and controls its
moisture content simultaneously. Sensible heat and latent
heat are most important factor in case of air conditioning
system.

REFRIGERANT

It is a substance in the vapor state which is used as a working fluid in refrigerators.

In a refrigerating machine, heat is transferred from cold body to hot body through
refrigerants. It is also a cooling agent of refrigerating system. The choice of
refrigerant depends on ability to remove heat, toxicity, density, availability, cost etc.

Classification

1. Primary refrigerants

2. Secondary refrigerants
