Symptom: Dead, won’t come on (boot-sequence related), locked up, or other symptoms that may
resemble a defective PWB-MAIN.

Correction: In most instances, normal operation can be restored by installing a software update
available on-line to the public at www.mitsubishi-tv.com under the “Support” tab. The
customer must be informed that he can download and install the software update him-
self, without involving a service call.

Note: The PWB-MAIN for these models is T/A Required. This procedure must be attempted
before a replacement PWB-MAIN can be ordered. If MDEA Parts receives a returned
defective PWB-MAIN that can be restored to normal operation by a software update,
the servicer will be subject to a $75.00 recycling fee. See Warranty Notice WR-5 for
details.

• PAGE: Page 001 is the 1st and oldest page. Error codes are logged chronologically from oldest
to the most recent. Page 002 and subsequent display more recent error codes.
• CURRENT TIME: This displays the total hours of operational use. It is the number of hours
the TV has been operated with the power ON. It shows the same time that is displayed in the
Option Menu <MENU> <2470>.
• LAMP TIME: Indicates the time the error was recorded. Comparing the Lamp Time to the
Current Time will indicate the age of each error record.
• CODE: This is the code for the error the TV Micro detected. Refer to the Service Manual for a
description of the error codes for specific models.
• STATUS: There are the 2 types of status. OCCURRENCE is logged when an abnormal error
indicator is received by the TV Micro. RECOVERY is logged when the TV Micro obtains the
normal indication for that error line.

Troubleshooting Note: The Error Code Log is intended as a reference tool and is not meant to be
used as a final determination of a defective part.

This Service Tip supersedes VS-72, VS-72A and VS-72B.

SYMPTOM: Set shuts off after displaying the message “TV will shut down in a few seconds.
Please check if the air flow is blocked.” After shutdown, the Status LED may be yellow. Perform-
ing the Self Diagnostics indicates error code 38, Lamp Temperature Abnormally High. If the lamp
cartridge filter is clean, it is highly likely that the TV is providing false information. The air flow
may not be blocked and the lamp temperature is not abnormally high. The cause of this problem is
most likely a poor connection on the thermal sensor. Also, because this is a connection issue, the
problem may be intermittent.

CURE: Replace the Lamp Thermal Sensor, located on the Lamp Cartridge Housing, with the new
version, p/n 299P313010A, which has the new and improved connection. After replacing the
sensor, you should inspect and clean the lamp cartridge filter. Or, in the rare circumstances when
the sensor is not available from MDEA Parts, refer to the original Service Tip, VS-72, on the
following pages. Place the “Orange Dot” supplied with the replacement sensor next to the serial
number on the back cover to indicate the sensor has been replaced with the new version.

Note: For warranty reimbursement, the old sensor must be returned to MDEA using the
mailing label included with the replacement.

NOTE: When performing in-warranty service on any of the models listed above for any other
reason, check to see if the sensor has been previously serviced either by removal of the connector
or by installation of the new version sensor. If the sensor has not been serviced, replace it as
instructed above. Then, in addition to any other reimbursement for the original warranty service,
MDEA will pay you a labor reimbursement of $60.00. This amount should be indicated in the
“Bonus Labor” section of the warranty claim.

In response to customer complaints regarding thermal sensor issue as described in Service Tip
VS-72C (October 2007) MDEA is providing a two year extension to the term of the original one
year limited warranty term. Such limited warranty term extension applies only for such thermal
sensor symptoms. Warranty reimbursement will be processed through the normal warranty claim
procedure.

SYMPTOM: Set shuts off after displaying the message “TV will shut down in a few seconds.
Please check if the air flow is blocked.” After shutdown, the Status LED may be yellow. The Self
Diagnostics indicates error code 38, Lamp Temperature Abnormally High. The symptom may
occur before the set has been on long enough to become overheated. The Lamp Cartridge Filter is
clean and there is no other evidence of overheating. The symptom may be intermittent.

CURE: In most cases the Connector to the Lamp Thermal Sensor is at fault. Use the following
steps to eliminate the Connector and restore the Thermal Sensor back into the the circuit.
1) Remove the Light Engine to access the Connector wiring to the Thermal Sensor.
2) Cut the Connector out the circuit with wire cutters and discard the Connector.
3) Strip the insulation 1/2 inch from the 2 wires to the Light Engine and the 2 wires to the
Thermal Sensor.
4) Prepare 2 Extension Wires 2 inches in length and strip the insulation 1/2 inch from the ends
of each one.

SUBJECT: CRT COOLANT LEAKAGE

As a part of the routine service performed during any projection television repair, check
for evidence of coolant leakage from the CRTs onto the chassis or into the neck of a CRT.
This check is particularly important if a loss of focus is detected. If coolant leakage is
diagnosed, Power should not be applied until the CRT has been replaced and the leakage
cleaned up. Otherwise, potentially dangerous arcing and, in rare circumstances, CRT
glass shattering may occur, even while the PCB-CRT is disconnected.
