Pump Health Monitoring

The document discusses pump health monitoring and important points to check the pump piping system. Pump health monitoring includes inspecting for restrictions, cavitation, leakage, auxiliary system issues, vibration, temperature risks, and improper pump installation which can lead to problems like shaft misalignment and excessive vibration. When checking the pump piping system, important points are to ensure straight suction piping with no obstructions, proper elbow positioning, avoiding air entrainment, and not using the pump to support the piping to prevent stress on the pump casing.

PUMP HEALTH MONITORING

Pump health monitoring process help to monitor the conditions of pump system. The
process may include monitoring and inspection on these item:-
1. RESTRICTION
 Suction piping and piping connection of pump system
 Root causes can include a plugged suction strainer, loss of level in the suction
drum or a possible valve issue.
2. CAVITATION
 Vibration and noise occur
 Damaging pump internals
 Disrupting flow
3. LEAKAGE
 Caused by mechanical failures
 Early detection of abnormal conditions such as cavitation, pressure imbalance
or excess vibration can help avoid leaks and their consequences.
4. AUXILIARY SYSTEM
 Inadequate monitoring of Auxiliary Seal Flush levels
 Result in missed low level conditions
 Indicating mechanical seal leakage and eventual flaring
5. VIBRATION
 Damage seals or internals and cause pump failure
 Inspection points for vibrations correspond to the centerline of the shaft on
the bearing housing
 Piping system vibration
6. TEMPERATURE RISK
 Bearing area, motor and media/product temperature
 Reduce equipment life expectancy
7. PUMP AND PIPING INSTALLATION
 Improper installation
 Lead to shaft misalignment
 Excessive vibration occur
PUMP PIPING SYSTEM
Many pumps are installed with inappropriate piping arrangements, resulting in premature
pump failures. Below is some of the important point to check the piping system of pump:

1. SUCTION PIPING
 Include a straight run pipe length between the pump inlet and any
obstruction in suction line
 Obstructions include valves, elbows, "tees", and etc.
 Pipe diameter on suction inspect
2. ELBOWS POSITION
 Diameters of straight run pipe between the pump inlet and elbow
 This helps to eliminate "side loading" of the pump impeller and creates
uniform pump axial bearing
3. AIR ENTRAINMENT
 Check adequate levels in supply tanks
 Check high pockets in suction piping, which can trap air, keep all pipe and
fitting connections tight in suction vacuum conditions
4. PIPING ARRANGEMENT
 Pumps should never support the suction or discharge piping
 Any stress on the pump casing by the piping system greatly reduces pump life
and performance
