Curriculum Approaches

The document discusses different approaches to curriculum development: 1. The behavioral approach specifies learning goals and objectives and arranges content and activities to match them. 2. The managerial approach views the principal as the curriculum and instructional leader responsible for developing goals, planning curriculum with stakeholders, and evaluating textbooks. 3. The systems approach examines how different parts of the school system relate to each other, with an organizational chart representing this view. 4. The humanistic approach places the learner at the center of the curriculum and is rooted in progressive philosophy.

III. Precis

Curriculum practitioners and implementers may use one or more approaches in

planning, implementing and evaluating the curriculum. Even textbook writers or
instructional material producers have different curricular approaches.

The following are the five curriculum approaches:

1. Behavioral Approach. This is based on a blueprint, where goals and

objectives are specified, contents and activities are also arranged to match with
the learning objectives.

2. Managerial Approach. In this approach, the principal is the curriculum

leader and at the same time instructional leader who is supposed to be the
general manager.

Some of the roles of the Curriculum Supervisors are the following:

a. help develop the school's education goals

b. plan curriculum with students, parents, teachers and other stakeholders
c. design programs of study by grade levels
d. plan or schedule classes or school calendar
e. prepare curriculum guides or teacher guides by grade level or subject area
f. help in the evaluation and selection of textbooks
g. observe teachers
h. assist teachers in the implementation of the curriculum
i. encourage curriculum innovation and change
j. develop standards for curriculum and instructional evaluation

3. Systems Approach. This was influenced by systems theory, where the

parts of the total school district or school are examined in terms of how they
relate to each other. The organizational chart of the school represents a systems
approach.

4. Humanistic Approach. This approach is rooted in the progressive

philosophy and child-centered movement.

IV. Analysis

I learned that there are many approaches to curriculum development.

They differ by the various perspectives curriculum developers construct. Some
curriculum developers focus on students and their learning goals and where
others focus on the effect of the teacher’s action upon learning.

I realized that Behavioral Approach begins with educational plans that

start with the setting of goals or objectives and the change in behavior indicates
the measure of the accomplishments. Managerial approach is less concerned
about subject matter, methods, and materials than improving curriculum.
Systems approach sees the following to be of equal importance are
administration, counseling, curriculum, instruction, and evaluation. Humanistic
Approach is that learner is at the center of the curriculum.

If given a chance, I would rather use the behavioral and humanistic

approach to be used in a classroom setting where in the humanistic approach;
teachers will have a better understanding of the learner’s lives. In the behavioral
approach, teachers can focus on establishing clear expectations for appropriate
behavior, monitoring behavior, and then reinforcing appropriate behavior and
redirecting inappropriate behavior.
