1. Introduction
The guarantee of the alignment and the installation by the SIMPLEX Flexitube is
in direct relation to the same being performed by a BVI supervisor or someone
authorised by BVI.
This installation guideline is to be used as a guideline only and can not be used
as installation manual.

2. Preparation before the installation of the SIMPLEX

Flexitube

2.1 Shipyard preparations

The shipyard will received from BVI a document called
"Shipyard Preparations". To ensure a quick and trouble free installation of the
SIMPLEX Flexitube, the shipyard has to follow the "Shipyard Preparations".

2.2 Disassembly
The following must parts be disassembled from the SIMPLEX Flexitube:
1 The adapter ring and the connection ring. The piping connections, which
end in the adapter ring, must be disconnected prior to the disassembly of
the rings. There are a number of o-rings, which are used to seal off the
adapter ring and the connection ring; these o-rings must be handled with
care.
2 It must be taken into consideration that the adapter ring and the connection
ring are heavy and should therefore be secured properly during dismount-
ing to avoid damage to the rings.

3. The installation
The installation sequence:
1 Before the SIMPLEX Flexitube is inserted into the ship structure the epoxy
resin sealing package must be inspected to make sure that it is setup the
right way and not damaged.
2 The SIMPLEX Flexitube can be installed using different methods. The ship-
yard can choose the method most suitable for them. One commonly used
method is to push the SIMPLEX Flexitube from the aft side using chain
blocks or pushing it a short distance and then pulling it from the inside of the
ship also using chain blocks.
3 Insert the SIMPLEX Flexitube from the aft end through the aft boss and the
forward boss.
4 When the SIMPLEX Flexitube has been partly inserted, apply vacuum to
the retractable sealing. When the sealing has retracted insert the remaining
part of the SIMPLEX Flexitube.
5 When the SIMPLEX Flexitube is totally inserted, disconnect the vacuum
pump from the valve and the sealing will expand.
6 Screw the plugs. Do not yet secure the plugs with thread lock.

4. The alignment of the SIMPLEX Flexitube

The alignment sequence
1 Weld the holders to the aft and forward boss and fit the hexagon head
screws. It is likely that the holders have to be cut to the proper length be-
fore welding them to the bosses.
2 Use the holders with screws to press the aft end of the SIMPLEX Flexitube
forward until the adjustment screws in the aft flange hit the aft boss.
3 Use the holders with screws to press the connection ring towards the for-
ward boss until the adjustment screws hit the forward boss.
4 Use the holders with screws to adjust the SIMPLEX Flexitube to the centre
of both the aft and the forward boss.

5 When doing the final alignment of the SIMPLEX Flexitube, laser equipment
should be used. The tube is adjusted to the right position by using the
holders with screws. The fine tuning is done using the holders with screws
and the adjustment screws.
6 The accepted deviance when using laser equipment to do the alignment of
the SIMPLEX Flexitube TM is 0.02 mm / m Le. 0.1 mm /5 m.
The shipyard must approve the alignment in writing!

5. The pressure test before the epoxy resin filling

This sequence is to be used to both the aft flange and the connection ring.
The pressure test sequence
1 Fit a pressure gauge to the air vent connection at the top of the ring.
2 Connect compressed air with a pressure of 0, 3 - 0, 5 bar to the epoxy
resin connection at the bottom of the ring.
3 Turn the compressed air off with a valve. Wait a few minutes and check the
pressure gauge for drop of pressure. If there has been none to only a small
drop of pressure it is ok to go ahead with the epoxy resin filling. The skill to
judge the pressure drop can only be achieved through experience gained
during actual installations. If there has been a substantial pressure drop
you must check with soap water to find the air leakage.

6. The filling of the epoxy resin

The filling of the epoxy resin has to be done according to the rules of the classi-
fication society.

The filling sequence will be similar for both the aft and the forward end.

1 The filling of the epoxy resin should be done through the hole at the bottom
of the part in question. Check the arrangement drawings of the order you
are installing to find out which threading that is used. Before filling, the air

vent nipple must be screwed as far out of the stern tube as possible. Dur-
ing the filling process when the epoxy resin level reaches the air vent nip-
ple, resin will start to pour out through the air vent nipple and into the SIM-
PLEX Flexitube. It is then time to fit the plug with o-ring back into the air
vent hole. Secure the plug.

The other plug at the bottom of the stern tube pipe should also be secured.
The inside of the SIMPLEX Flexitube should be protected prior to the filling.
The protection is used to avoid the epoxy resin from the pouring onto the
SIMPLEX Flexitube.

7. The final installation

Fit the following parts to the SIMPLEX Flexitube:

Pipes and couplings

1 Fit all the dismounted couplings.

2 Tighten all pipe couplings securely.
3 The couplings must be pressure tested.

Bolts

This sequence is applied on both the aft and forward end.

1 Drill and thread for the screws, which are to secure the
SIMPLEX Flexitube in the aft and forward boss. These screws should go
through the aft flange, the epoxy resin and into the aft boss. The aft flange
has been pre drilled, there is only a few mm left to drill.
2 Fit the screws and the rubber steel washers, and secure properly.

Temperature sensors

1 Insert the temperature sensor(s) through the protection hose which leads to

the lead through in the adapter ring.

Protection of the installed the SIMPLEX Flexitube

1 When the stern tube has been installed it is very important to protect the
bearing surfaces from damage.

Service report.

1 The service report has to be finished and it shall be sent to BVI or handed
over to the supervisor or someone authorised by BVI.

2 The alignment has to be approved by the shipyard in writing.

Introduction

The SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube is a turnkey solution, from the manufacturing via the

installation to the maintenance. The perfect alignment and the non welded in-

stallation results in a stress free installation, which will lower the transferring of

vibrations to the ship structure. The perfect alignment will lower the wear of the

bearings and the shaft seals and this will dramatically reduce the maintenance.

The SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube is designed to have an optimised maintenance, to

keep the maintenance low and simple. This results in only a few items being

maintained.

To be able to use this maintenance manual properly, a set of the final drawings

will be provided for the order. These should be used for reference together with

this maintenance manual.

1. The maintenance

The following chapters will cover the maintenance of the SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube.

1.1 The forward side, the "O-ring"

The forward side of the SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube is located inside of the engine

room, and here is the Adapter Ring located. The Adapter Ring is the access

point for all the piping in the system and this is one of the reasons that makes

the SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube easy and accessible to maintain. Picture number 1 is

showing the SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube going through the bulk and into the engine

room.

On the forward part of the SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube there is a ring called the Con-

nection Ring. This ring is connected to the ship structure, the forward boss by

epoxy resin. Inside of the Connection Ring there is an o-ring located used to

seal off for the fresh water tank and also to allow the axial flexibility. This o-ring

can be seen in picture 2, located in the Connection Ring.

The pressure difference between the water tank and the engine room side will

make the o-ring tightly seal off the water tank from the engine room. However, if

water is detected on the engine room side, the following action is to be taken to

seal off the leakage.

Leave the original o-ring in its position and add another o-ring in the pre-

machined groove on the forward side of the Connection Ring.

The enlargement in picture number 3 is showing the machined groove and the

spare o-ring. The o-ring is fitted with a plate and then fixed to the Connection

Ring using bolts, fitted into pre-machined holes. The o-ring, the plate and the

bolts are delivered by SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube, where the o-ring is delivered in a

split condition. An epoxy must be used to join the o-ring, e.g. Loctite 406.

1.2 The temperature sensors

The number of temperature sensors used in the SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube is first of

all based on classification requirements and also customer requirements. Since

it is easy and accessible to change the temperature sensors from engine room

side, there is no need to have several sensors in the system. One single ele-

ment PT 100 temperature sensor is all that is required. However, verify the type

and number of sensors against the order drawings.

When the temperature sensor(s) need(s) to be changed the procedure is very

simple. Picture number 4 is showing the SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube from the engine

room, thus without the shaft seal mounted.

In order to change the temperature sensor, open the connection box and dis-

connect the wires from the connection terminal. Pull the temperature sensor wire

towards you. Insert the new temperature sensor into the protection pipe. Before

the insertion, check the parts list for the length of the original wire. Measure the

new wire so that you are aware of how much will be left when you have installed

the new sensor. This will help you realise when the full length of the sensor is

installed. Connect the wires of the new sensors to the connection terminal in the

connection box.

1.3 The oil sample and the monitoring system

An SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube fulfils the classification societies monitoring system

requirements. The possibility to change the temperature sensors, see chapter

1.2, and being able to take an oil sample, fulfils the classification requirements.

This is a part of the SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube turnkey solution.

1.3.1 The oil sample

The SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube offers the possibility to take the oil sample at the very

aft end, between the aft bearing and the aft shaft seal.

The oil sample is to be taken on regular basis according to the classification so-

cieties. This is to be verified against the chosen classification society. On the

SIMPLEX- Flexi Tube, it is prepared with a connection on the Adapter Ring to be

able to take this sample. The connection is referred to as "Drain/sampling" in

The connection is normally the size of G1/2" but this can be verified on the order

drawings. A valve needs to be connected to this threaded connection and then

the oil sample can easily be received.
