Zone Level Pendulum-Exp

1) The document describes a science fair experiment for young children to investigate how the period of a simple pendulum varies with its length. 2) The experiment involves measuring the time for 10 oscillations of a pendulum bob suspended by a thread at different lengths (30, 40, 50, 60, 70 cm) using a stopwatch. 3) Students are to conduct the experiment, record their results in a table, and answer questions about identifying variables, safety precautions, reasons for multiple trials, and conclusions that can be drawn about the relationship between pendulum length and period.

SCIENCE FAIR FOR YOUNG CHILDREN 2019

HANDS - ON EXPERIMENT
1 HOUR 30 MINUTES

SCHOOL NAME: ………………………………………………………….

TASK:
You are given Pendulum bob, thread, retort stand, stopwatch and scale protector.
You are required to conduct a pendulum experiment to investigate how the period of
a simple pendulum varies with its length thread.

Setup:

Procedure:

1. The thread is tied to the pendulum bob. The other end of the thread is tied
around the arm of the retort stand so that it can swing freely. The length of the
pendulum, l is measured to 30 cm as per the diagram.
2. With the thread taut and the bob at rest, the bob is lifted at a small amplitude
(of not more than 10°). Ensure that the pendulum swings in a single plane.
3. The time for ten complete oscillations of the pendulum is measured using the
stopwatch.
4. The period of oscillation, T is calculated using the average reading divided by
the number of oscillations, i.e. 10.
5. Step 3 is repeated 2 times, and the average of all three readings are
calculated.
6. Steps 1 to 6 are repeated using l = 40 cm, 50 cm, 60 cm, and 70 cm.

Result:
