Bluetooth.

 It is a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) technology and is used for exchanging data
over smaller distances using radio communication technology

 This technology was invented by Ericson in 1994.

 It operates in the unlicensed, industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band at 2.4 GHz to
2.485 GHz.
 Maximum devices that can be connected at the same time are 7.
 Bluetooth ranges up to 10 meters.
 It provides data rates up to 1 Mbps or 3 Mbps depending upon the version.
 The spreading technique which it uses is FHSS (Frequency hopping spread spectrum).

 Standard IEEE 802.15.1 used

 A b luetooth network is called  piconet and a collection of interconnected piconets called

scatternet.

Bluetooth Architecture
 Two types of network topologies in Bluetooth viz. Piconet and scatternet
 Piconet is formed by (1) master and one slave (2) one master and multiple slaves.

Fig: Piconet tropologies

 Piconet consists of one primary (master) node and seven active secondary (slave)
nodes, only one primary or master station in each piconet.

 piconet can have upto eight active nodes (1 master and 7 slaves) or stations within the
distance of 10 meters.

 8 maximum devices communicating

 Slaves can only transmit when master request
 255 slaves in parking state
 Active slaves are polled by the master for transmission.
 Each station will get 8 bit parked address.
 Total 255 parked slaves are possible in one piconet.
 The parked station can join in just 2 ms.
 All the other stations can join in more time.
 About 10 such piconets exist in the bluetooth radio coverage area.

Scatter net

Scatternet is formed by combining various piconets.

• A slave in one piconet can act as a master or primary in other piconet.

• Station or node receive messages from the master in the first piconet and

deliver to its slaves in other piconet where it is acting as master. This node is

called bridge slave.

• Thus a station can be a member of two piconets.

• A station cannot be a master in two piconets.

Advantages:
 Low cost.
 Easy to use.
 It can also penetrate through walls.
 It creates an adhoc connection immediately without any wires.
 It is used for voice and data transfer.
Disadvantages:
 It can be hacked and hence, less secure.
 It has slow data transfer rate: 3 Mbps.
 It has small range: 10 meters.

Bluetooth Applications
.
 used in wireless head sets.
 used to transfer files, images and MP3 or MP4 between cell phones.
 It is used in laptops and notebooks.
 It is used in PDAs (personal digital assistant).
 It is also used in printers.
 It is almost used in wireless communication (WAN).
 It is used in wireless mouse and keyboards.
 It is used for sending small advertisements from Bluetooth enabled
advertising hoardings to other, discoverable, Bluetooth devices.
 It is used in short range transmission of health sensor data from medical
devices to mobile phone, set top box or dedicated telehealth

Bluetooth vs. Wi-Fi

Compared to Wi-Fi,

 Bluetooth networking is slower,

 more limited in range and

 supports fewer peer devices.
