Week 11: Chapters 24, 25, and 26.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this week’s chapters, the student should be able to:
• Discuss magnets and how magnetic poles act on each other
• Draw magnetic field lines for basic magnets
• Discuss magnetic domains
• Explain the reasons behind magnetism and the magnetic field
• Describe the relationship between a compass and a magnetic field
• Explain how currents give rise to a magnetic field
• Describe how electromagnets are made
• Explain magnetic forces on charged particles and on
current carrying wires
• Discuss how electric meters and electric meters work
• Give a clear description of the Earth's magnetic field
• Discuss northern lights
• Discuss biomagnetism
• Discuss the idea behind electromagnetic induction.
• Demonstrate Faraday's Law.
• Describe the basic workings of an electrical generator.
• Explain alternating current.
• Discuss power production.
• Explain MHD power.
• Explain how a transformer works.
• Perform a simple calculation involving transformers.
• Explain self-induction.
• Describe power transmission to our homes by the power company.
• Explain Field induction.
• Demonstrate electromagnetic waves
• Recite the speed of electromagnetic waves in space
• Discuss the electromagnetic spectrum
• Define the visible light spectrum
• Discuss superconductors and how they work
• Explain how transparent and opaque materials work
• Discuss the workings of shadows
• Discuss what an umbra and penumbra look like
• Distinguish the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse
• Draw shadows with rays of light
• Describe how the human eye works

Required Assignments: The following assignments are to be completed by the


Saturday of Week 11 at 11:55 pm.

1) Read textbook (Hewitt) Chapter 24 Magnetism pp. 452-466.


2) Read textbook (Hewitt) Chapter 25 Electromagnetic Induction pp. 469-480.

3) Read textbook (Hewitt) Chapter 26 Properties of Light pp. 486-500.

4) Read the lecture notes for Chapters 24, 25, and 26. You can access the
lecture notes by selecting the “Modules” icon on the left menu bar, and
select “Week 11” to see the notes.

5) Option 1: Complete the Chapter 24 Homework assignment in Mastering


Physics. Do any 12 of the questions to get full credit. Any extra questions
will give you some extra credit.

Option 2: Complete the following Chapter 24 assignment from the textbook


(Hewitt) pp. 466-468:
End of Chapter Questions 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 23, 24, 27, & 29. (Do any 5 of
these.)
End of Chapter Questions 33, 36, 38, 42, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57, 59, 62, 64, 66 69, 71, 75, and
77. (Do any 7 of these.)
Any extra questions will give you some extra credit.

6) Option 1: Complete the Chapter 25 Homework assignment in Mastering


Physics. Do any 12 of the questions to get full credit. Any extra questions
will give you some extra credit.

Option 2: Complete the following Chapter 25 assignment from the textbook


(Hewitt) pp. 480-483:
End of Chapter Questions 2, 4, 5, 8, 12, 15, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, & 27. (Do any 4 of
these.)
End of Chapter Questions 35 and 36. (Do any 1 of these.)
End of Chapter Questions 37, 40, and 41. (Do any 1 of these.)
End of Chapter Questions 45 and 46. (Do any 1 of these.)
End of Chapter Questions 48, 49, 53, 55, 57, 60, 61, 63, 66, 71, 73, 75, 77, 79, 83, 85, 87,
89, 91, & 93. (Do any 5 of these.)

7) Option 1: Complete the Chapter 26 Homework assignment in Mastering


Physics. Do any 12 of the questions to get full credit. Any extra questions

Option 2: Complete the following Chapter 26 assignment from the


textbook (Hewitt) pp. 500-503:
End of Chapter Questions 3, 5, 7, 9, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21, 23, 24, 26, 27, and
29. (Do any 5 of these.)
End of Chapter Questions 33, 35, and 37. (Do any 1 of these.)
End of Chapter Questions 41, 43, 45, 48, 50, 53, 55, 57, 59, 61, 63, 65, 67, 69, 71, 73, 75,
77, 79, 83, 85, 87, 89, 91, & 93. (Do any 6 of these.)
Any extra questions will give you some extra credit.

Note for Option 2: Open the Week 11 module “Chapters 24, 25, & 26 Homework (Option
2)” assignment link.
In the “Submission” area, you will see “Submit Assignment” at the upper right side of
the page. Click this link.
Save your Chapters 24, 25, and 26 Assignment as a Word document titled with your
name and the words “Chapters 24, 25, and 26 Assignment” (e.g. Mike's Chapters 24, 25,
and 26 Assignment) and upload the document to the Week 11 module to Chapters 24, 25,
& 26 Homework (Option 2) assignment link submission area. Be sure to click “Submit”.

8) Type a journal entry on Hans Oersted, Michael Faraday, or on James


Maxwell. It should be at least one page long in the format outlined in the
syllabus. Post your entry to the class Discussion board under "Oersted,
Faraday, or Maxwell Journal”.

9) Respond to one of this week’s discussion questions. Post your response to


the class Discussion board under the topic of “Week 11 Discussion”; identify
the letter of the question you are responding to on the “Subject” line (e.g.
Question A). Also, for clarity, begin your response by writing the question.
You may respond to as many questions that interest you.

A)Discuss the importance of the role of Earth's magnetic field in


protecting us from harmful cosmic radiation.

B)Discuss the how the human brain/eye system can be fooled by optical
illusions.

C)Discuss the importance and basics of AC power generation.

D)Discuss the basics of radio/TV transmission and reception.

10) Comment on at least one other student’s response to this unit’s discussion
by replying to the student’s posted message(s) on the Discussion board.

11) Comment on at least one other student’s journal entry by replying to the
student’s posted journal entry on the Discussion board.

Optional Practice Assignment:

a) Do the practicing physics workbook pages 105-112.

Important Announcement: Exam 5 will cover chapters 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26
of the text. It will be of multiple choice format, and you will have 90 minutes
to answer the 35 questions. You will have three days to take the test online. It is
due by Sat., April 14th. To access the test, go to the “Modules” link on the left
menu bar, select Week 12 …., and then select Exam 5. You are permitted to use
your textbook, calculator, and class postings in Canvas.
