Maths 8 Week 5 Trigonometry

The document defines trigonometric ratios for a right triangle ABC with a right angle at B. It gives the definitions of sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, and cotangent in terms of the opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse sides relative to angle A. It then gives an example problem to find the lengths of sides BC and AC of a right triangle where the hypotenuse AB is 25 cm and angle ACB is 30 degrees. It shows that using tangent, BC is calculated as 25√3 cm and using sine, AC is calculated as 50 cm.

Trigonometric Ratios
Opposite & Adjacent Sides in a Right Angled Triangle
In the ΔABC right-angled at B, BC is the side opposite to ∠A, AC is the hypotenuse and AB is the
side adjacent to ∠A.

Trigonometric Ratios
For the right ΔABC, right-angled at ∠B, the trigonometric ratios of the ∠A are as follows:

• sin A=opposite side/hypotenuse=BC/AC

• cos A=adjacent side/hypotenuse=AB/AC

• tan A=opposite side/adjacent side=BC/AB

• cosec A=hypotenuse/opposite side=AC/BC

• sec A=hypotenuse/adjacent side=AC/AB

• cot A=adjacent side/opposite side=AB/BC

Use of Trigonometric Ratios and Table in Solving Problems
Example

Find the lengths of the sides BC and AC in ∆ ABC, right-angled at B where AB = 25 cm and
∠ACB = 30°, using trigonometric ratios.

Solution

To find the length of the side BC, we need to choose the ratio having BC and the given side
AB. As we can see that BC is the side adjacent to angle C and AB is the side opposite to angle
C, therefore

tan 30°

BC = 25√3 cm

To find the length of the side AC, we consider

AC = 50 cm
