01(a). A simply supported beam is constructed by welding a very stiff beam to a beam which is
relatively much less stiff in bending. Using strain energy method find the deflection under the

01(d).
(i). A disc supported between two bearings on a shaft of negligible weight has a mass of 80 kg and a
radius of gyration of 300 mm. The distances of the disc from the bearings are 300 mm to the
right from the left hand bearing and 450 mm to the left from the right hand bearing. The bearings
are supported by thin vertical cords. When the disc rotates at 100 rad/s in the clockwise direction
looking from the left hand bearing, the cord supporting the left hand side bearing breaks. Find
the angular velocity of precession at the instant the cord is cut and discuss the motion of the disc.

(ii). The profile of a radial cam is specified as x = 15cos and y = 10 + 5 sin where  is the angle of
rotation of the cam and (x,y) are the Cartesian coordinates of the cam profile. Determine the

01(e). A circular cylinder of mass „m‟ and radius „r‟ is connected by a spring of stiffness „K‟ on an
inclined plane as shown in figure. If it is free to roll without slipping on rough surface, determine
its natural frequency? Take,  = Coefficient of friction between the cylinder and the inclined
surface.

(i). A Single cylinder double acting steam engine develops 150 kW at a mean speed of 80 rpm. The
coefficient of fluctuation of energy is 0.1 and fluctuation of speed is  2% of the mean speed. If
the diameter of the flywheel rim is 2 meters and the hub and spokes provided 5% of the
rotational inertia of the flywheel. Find (i) the mass of the flywheel, (ii) Cross sectional area of
the rim.
[Assume density of flywheel material (which is cast iron) as 7200 kg/m3]. (15 M)

02(c). The system shown is displaced from its static equilibrium position to the right with a distance of
0.01 m. An impulsive force acts towards the left on the mass at an instant of its release to give it
an initial velocity V0 in that direction. If the system has following parameters. K = 15700 N/m,
c = 1570 N-s/m, m = 9.8 kg.
(i) Derive the expression for the displacement from the equilibrium position in terms of time
„t‟ and initial velocity V0.
(ii) What would be the value of V0 to make the mass pass the position of static equilibrium
1/100 second after the application of force.

03(b). A vehicle of mass 1200 kg is moving down the hill at a slope of 1: 5 at 72 km/h. It is to be
stopped in a distance of 50 m. If the diameter of the tyre is 600 mm, determine the average
braking torque to be applied to stop the vehicle, neglecting all the frictional energy except for the
brake. If the friction energy is momentarily stored in a 20 kg cast iron brake drum, what is
average temperature rise of the drum? The specific heat for cast iron may be taken as 520 J/kgC.
Determine also, the minimum coefficient of friction between the tyres and the road in order that
the wheels do not skid, assuming that the weight is equally distributed among all the four wheels.

03(c). A shaft, rotating at a uniform speed, carries two discs A and B of masses 5 kg and 4 kg,
respectively. The CG of each disc is 2.5 mm from the axis of rotation, and the angle between the
radii containing the centres of gravity is 90. The shaft has bearings at C and D, between A and
B, such that AC = 300 mm, AD = 900 mm, and AB = 1200 mm. It is desired to make the
dynamic forces on the bearings equal and opposite, and to have a minimum value for a given
speed by means of a mass in the plane E at a radius of 25 mm. Determine

kW of the gear drive.

04(c). A single cylinder vertical engine has a bore of 30.5cm, a stroke of 40cm and a connecting rod of
80 cm long, as shown in the figure. The mass of reciprocating parts is 135 kg. When the piston is

engine is 250 rpm. The CG of the connecting rod is 50cm from the small end and the radius of
gyration about the centroidal axis is 30cm. The mass of the actual reciprocating parts is 90 kg
and that of the connecting rod is 120 kg. Determine the actual turning moment for this instant.

05(d). An epicyclic gear train consists of a sun gear, a stationary internal gear and three identical planet
gears which are carried on a star-shaped planet carrier. The sun gear, internal gear and planet
carrier have common axis. The speed of the planet carrier is one-fifth of the speed of the sun gear
in the same sense. If minimum number of teeth on any gear is limited to 18, determine the
number of teeth on each gear. Determine the torque to keep the internal gear stationary, if input
torque at sun gear is 100 Nm. (12 M)

05(e). In a spring controlled governor, the controlling force is 60 N when the radius of rotation is 150
mm and 22.5 N when the radius is 75 mm. Each ball weighs 7.5 N. Find the equilibrium speed
when the radius of rotation is 100 mm. What change is required to make the governor
isochronous ? Also determine the isochronous speed. (12 M)

06(a). A cantilever beam of rectangular cross-section [width b = 25 mm, height h = 100 mm] is loaded
by a Force P that acts at the mid height of the beam and is inclined at an angle  to the vertical
Two strain gauges are placed at point c which also is at the mid height of the beam. Gauge A
measures the strain in the horizontal direction and gauge “B” measures the strain at an angle
 = 60 to the horizontal. The measured strains are a = 125×10-6 and b = –375×10-6. Determine
the force P and the angle  assuming the material is steel with E = 200 GPa and  = 1/3.

06(c). A riveting machine is driven by a constant torque 4 kW motor. Each riveting operation takes 1
second and requires 9000 N-m of energy. A flywheel of mass 130 kg and radius of gyration
0.5 m is fitted to the riveting machine. If the speed of the flywheel is 420 rpm before riveting,
calculate
(i) the fall in the speed of the flywheel after riveting
(ii) the number of rivets fitted per hour. (20 M)

07(a). An automobile is fitted with a spring loaded Hartnell governor. Its flyballs rotate at 500 r.p.m.
having radius of rotation of 7cm with sleeve in mid-position and balls arms vertical. The lengths
of ball and sleeve arms are same. The maximum sleeve movement is 2 cm with 5% variation in
speed. The mass of the sleeve is 5 kg and the friction may be assumed to be equivalent to an
additional load of 30 N at the sleeve. The effort of governor is sufficient to overcome the friction
of the sleeve caused by 1% change in speed at mid-position.
Calculate:
(i) the mass of flyballs,
(ii) the spring rate,
(iii) the initial compression of the spring,
(iv) the governor effort for 1% change of speed, and

friction is 0.2. The normal pressure on the clutch face is not to exceed 0.1 N/mm2. Determine:

(ii). A 80 mm long journal bearing supports a load of 2800 N on a 50 mm diameter shaft. The bearing
has a radial clearance of 0.05 mm and the viscosity of the oil is 0.021 N-s / m2 at the operating
temperature. If the bearing is capable of dissipating 80 W, determine the maximum safe speed.
