Type Bits

There are two main types of bits used for oil well drilling: 1) Rolling cutter bits, also called roller cone bits or tri-cone bits, which have three rotating cones with teeth used to drill formations. The teeth shapes depend on whether the formation is soft or hard. 2) Fixed cutter bits which do not have moving parts and include polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) bits used for unconsolidated formations and diamond bits used for coring with diamonds embedded in tungsten carbide.

Bit : equipment used for oil well drilling

1_Rolling Cutter Bits


Rolling cutter bits, which some may also call roller cone bits or tri-cone bits, have three cones. Each
cone can be rotated individually when the drill string rotates the body of the bit. The cones have roller
bearings fitted at the time of assembly. The rolling cutting bits can be used to drill any formations if
the proper cutter, bearing, and nozzle are selected.There are two types of rolling cutter bits :

a. Milled-tooth bits

Milled-tooth bits have steel tooth cutters ,he teeth vary in size and shape, depending on the
formation. Teeth of the bits are different depending on formations as follows:
Soft formation: The teeth should be long, slender and widely spaced. These teeth will produce
freshly broken cuttings from soft formations.
Hard formation: The teeth should be short and closely spaced. These teeth will produce smaller,
more rounded, crushed, and ground cuttings from hard formations.

b. Tungsten Carbide Insert (TCI) or Insert bits

Tungsten Carbide Insert (TCI) or Insert bits generally have tungsten carbide inserts (teeth) that
are pressed into the bit cones.
Teeth of the bits are different depending on the formation as follows:
Soft formation: Long-extension, chisel shape inserts
Hard formation: Short-extension, rounded inserts
2_Fixed Cutter Bits

a. Polycrystalline Diamond Cutters (PDC)


It is development type of drag bit involves moveable parts used to drill unconsolidated formation
and moderately hard formation.

b. Diamond bit:

the body of drilling machine consist of Tungesten Carbide which contains lots of diamond parts,
this type of bit doesn't have moving parts, Also, the diamond bit use to do coring process.
Gridding is the method of drilling in Diamond bit.
