of nodes and node numbering systems.

Construction Planning: Planning for construction and site facilities using networks; preparation
of construction schedules for jobs, materials, equipment, labour and budgets using CPM.
Unit-III (8L)
Construction equipments and methods: Equipments for earthworks; concrete construction;
aggregate production; concrete production, handling and placement; mixers, vibrations and
temperature control.
Unit-IV (8L)
Control on construction: Construction quality control and inspection; significance of variability
and estimation of risk; Construction cost control; Crashing of networks.

Intake Structures; Functions of intake structures, its location types, trash track dimensions,
design, spacing of bars, methods of cleaning, design of transition.

Conveyance System; Power canal location site, surges in canals, penstocks types, design and
layout, economical diameter of penstock, hydraulic losses, branches, air vent, forebay.
Unit-VI (8L)
Hydraulic Transients: basic equation of unsteady flow through conduits, methods of
characteristics, boundary condition, single pipe line application for various valve opening
conditions ,functions surge tanks and its location, types and design of surge tank, introduction
transient software like HAMMER and HYTRAN etc.
Unit-VII (8L)
Hydraulic Turbines: types of turbines characteristics and efficiency of turbines, selection of
turbines, cavitations, casings, draft tubes, tail race and their hydraulic design.
Unit-VIII (3L)
Small hydropower development: benefits and potential of small hydropower plants, components
of small hydropower plants, trench weir, desilting tank and turbines.

1 – What is surge tank? Explain the functions of surge tanks and also explain the
types of surge tank.
2. A run of river plant operates as a peak load station with weekly load factor
of 30%. What will be minimum flow in the river so that the station may act
as base load station?
Assume :-
i) Rated installed capacity of generator = 15,000 kW
ii) Operating head = 25 m
iii) Plant efficiency = 75%
Also determine the daily load factor if the river flow is 15 cumec.
CLASS TEST
1. Classify the hydropower plant on the basis of functions and plant capacity.
2. The runoff river hydropower plant has inflow of 30 cumecs and it works on
head of 50 m with a provision for pondage to meet daily demand with load
factor of 75%. Determine the power generation capacity of plant at 85%
over all efficiency. What amount of pondage is needed if the plant operates
at the peak station for six hours?

the overall efficiency of turbine is 75% and velocity of water in the jet is
95% of the theoretical velocity.
Determine –
i) The quantity of water in cumecs.
ii) The size of the jet.
Assume Cd = 0.988 speed ratio = 0.45.

methods, California bearing ratio, triaxial, McLeod and Burmister method, advantages and
limitations, IRC method of design, design considerations for expressways.

Design of Rigid Pavements: Design factors, load and temperature stresses, load transfer devices,
design of Dowel and Tie bars, joint requirement and working, IRC methods of design of SFRC
pavements, construction techniques and specifications, quality control tests, reinforced concrete
pavements, continuously reinforced and prestressed.

Stabilized Roads: Aggregate mixtures, proportioning, types of stabilizations, advantages and
limitation, special problems related to drainage, control of seepage and capillary rise.

Pavement Evaluation Techniques for Functional and Structural Evaluation: Benkalman beam
deflection method, flexible and rigid overlays.
Unit-VIII (6L)
Maintenance of Pavements: Routine and periodic maintenance, special repairs, maintenance
management system, case study of failure of flexible and rigid pavements cracking, settlement,
frost heaving and mud pumping in pavements
