What’s In
Are you ready to learn from this module? I think you should, because some of
the things that you are going to explore here are used by your parents or even your
grandparents in the farm or in your backyard garden. Have you tried planting your
own fruits and vegetables? It is a fun activity, isn’t it?
In your previous lesson, you were taught of the competencies and skills that
an agriculturist should possess. In this module, you will be learning on the basic farm
tools and its uses, check farm tools for faults and use appropriate tools for the job
requirement according to manufacturer’s specification and instructions. Are you
excited for this lesson? You may now proceed with the next activity.

Activity 2
Direction: You are going to explore the life of a little farmer known as Biboy as he
will prepare his sweet potato garden. Try to help Biboy in accomplishing his activities
by providing him the necessary tool in each of the particular task in planting the
sweet potato. Choose the tools from the given choices.
Biboy used to have a garden in their backyard but since the classes started,
he was not able to plant crops anymore. Biboy has to clean the backyard by cutting
the weeds and tall grasses with the use of (1) __________. He need to remove the
shrubs and other branches of trees around. Using the (2) ____________ Biboy will
also clean the ground and level the soil. He also need to make a plot by digging
canals around the plot using (3) _____________and pulverize the soil with (4)
_____________.
After preparing the soil, Biboy will plant the small stems of sweet potatoes that
will soon grow its own root crops, but before that Biboy need to sprinkle the young
plants using (5) __________, and put some organic fertilizers from animal manure
and decomposed plant materials.

2. Why do you think Biboy has to use the necessary tools in performing a
particular task?

Before a farmer can produce his own crops from his garden or his farm, he
need to have some tools that will help him make his work easier and faster. The
following are some of the examples of common farm tools and its uses. Read each
item carefully and try to master its uses of each so that you will be guided in your
next activities.
Hand Tools
Hand tools are usually light and are used without the help of animals or
machines. They are being used in performing farm activities which involve small
areas like school garden and home garden.
Bolo/ Machete is used for cutting tall
grasses and weeds and chopping
branches of trees.
5
Hoe is used to shape soil, remove
weeds, clear soil, and harvest root
crops. Shaping the soil includes piling
soil around the base of plants (hilling),
digging narrow furrows (drills) and
shallow trenches for planting seeds or
bulbs.
Fork Hoe (also known as prong hoes,
tined hoes or bent forks) are hoes that
have two or more tines at right angles to
the shaft. Their use is typically to loosen
the soil, prior to planting or sowing.

cultivation.
Farm Implements
These are accessories which are being pulled by working animals or mounted
to machineries (hand tractor, tractor) which are usually used in the preparation of
land. These are usually made of a special kind of metal.
Plows. These are farm implements Native plow
either pulled by a working animal or a
tractor. The plow is specifically used for
tilling large areas, making furrows and
inter row cultivation. Plows pulled by
working animals are made of either a Disc plow
combination of metal and wood or pure
metal. They are used to till areas with a
shallower depth than that of the disc
plows which are pulled by tractors.
Harrow. The native wooden harrow is Native wooden harrow
made of wood with a metal teeth and
pulled by a carabao while the disc
harrow is made of metal mounted to a
tractor. Harrows are used for tilling and Disc harrow

pulverizing the soil.
Functional farm tools and implement are important in performing certain task,
however common accidents actually occur due to distorted, improper use and
unchecked materials. Before using any farm tool, take note of the following
reminders:
a. Double check the tool quality. This concerns the quality of strength, impact
resistance and/or material hardness characteristics of the steel.
b. Basic form, dimensions and weight. The tool is defined by specifications which
describe its form, its principal dimensions including length, width and thickness,
together with its weight.
c. Handles. Handles should be made of quality woods, do not have breakage, tool
heads are properly anchored and satisfactorily gripped.
d. Marking. Quality tools usually carry markings placed by the manufacturer which
might include manufacturers name and/or trademark and nominal weight or size
of the head.
In order to perform your assigned work or task properly, take note of the following
general safety procedures that are applicable to your work area.
Adhere to instructions. Read labels and warnings on containers and tools. If
there are terms or conditions that you do not understand, you may ask for the
guidance of your parents or teachers.
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for use and maintenance of a
specific tool. Some tools have specified instructions, read and understand it
carefully.
Follow the instructor’s directions. Adhere to the instructions especially on
some critical task.
Wear protective gear such as gloves, earplugs, and safety shoes if
appropriate. You should always remember and consider your safety before
and while performing your task.
Do not wear loose-fitting clothing that could get caught in a moving part. As
much as possible, wear the prescribe clothing.
Wear a hair net to prevent long hair from getting caught in a tool and avoid
wearing any accessories during working time.
Inspect each tool before using it to make sure it is working properly especially
the joints and the blades.
8
Tell the instructor about any possible damaged tool or any part of the tool.
Do not use a tool that is not working properly, find a replacement immediately
to avoid accidents
Return each tool to its proper place of storage. Keep a clean and organized
working area.
