SENIOR PROJECT SELF-EVALUATION

Directions: Utilize this worksheet to help evaluate yourself and your project. Be as complete
and descriptive as possible. This self-evaluation should give the scoring team a clear picture of
what you accomplished in your project.

Name - Haley Gammage Project Start Date – Second Semester, 2020

Title of Project - Federal Catastrophe Project Completion Date – May 9th, 2020

1. In 40 words or more describe who your project benefited and how. In other words, what was the
impact of your project?

My project benefits anyone who had little to no knowledge on what the Federal Emergency Management
Agency is and how it works. Helping them understand what it does can help people become more aware
of their duty as citizens to prepare for natural disasters. It also helps FEMA, the more knowledge that
people have the better they will understand that FEMA struggles to keep up. This will lesson the burden
on FEMA in the long run.

2. In at least 40 words explain how the project challenged you. How was this a stretch for you?

This project challenged me a lot. At times I became tired of learning about FEMA because there was so
much I knew but also so much I did not know. There is so much information it was hard to get everything
I wanted to into a 15-page paper. I struggled trying to find a way that my project could tie into my
community which came to so many dead ends. On top of all that COVID-19 did not help at all with
making this any easier. It stretched me because I had never had to plan an event or write a 15-page paper
that sounded professional and put together.
3. List and then describe 5-8 fundamental ideas/concepts/skills of your project, which you
learned/enhanced during your project.

 Time management – learning how to manage my time wisely and get things done on time was a
key part of this project.
 Organization – being organized was of the upmost importance. Having notes where you needed
them and specific documents when needed to refer to. It taught me how to have multiple
documents but have them become cohesive together.
 Social Media outreach – I had never had a social media outreach other than my personal
accounts, so having a business account taught me how to keep up and post regularly. Keeping
followers informed and up to date on what was going on.
 Professional writing – I learned how to write a 15-page paper over many months that sounded
cohesive and professional. This will benefit me greatly in the future.
 Planning and scheduling – This was a big part of senior project. It taught me how to plan my
months, from other people’s project to things that I needed to get done. It helped me become
more organized and that I had a schedule that I had to pertain to in order to get work done.

4. List and describe 4-8 problems/obstacles/issues you encountered in your project, and briefly
describe how you solved each.
 Many project ideas – I had many project ideas but sadly they all fell through. I really wanted to
make a big impact and help those effected by hurricanes, but it was just out of my hands and I
really could not make any of my ideas come to life. I solved this by downscaling my ideas and
deciding to start a club at school that would talk about natural disasters.
 COVID-19 – COVID-19 has been a big obstacle for my whole class. It threw a wrench in all our
plans. So, I once again had to change my project and decided to make an Instagram that would
inform about natural disasters and pandemics.
 Procrastination – I am a bad procrastinator. Being home has made me procrastinate even more
and not have as much motivation if I had if I was in school. However, I am trying my best to
overcome this even though it is hard.
 Too much FEMA – At times I got tired of talking about FEMA and was sad that none of my
plans worked. I wanted to change my topic and find something ‘easier’ but I’m so glad that I
stuck with this topic and finished it because I am proud of all the work that I put in and now the
knowledge that I have on FEMA.

5. List materials used.

 Phone
 Instagram
 Research paper
 Internet

6. List all people who helped you on the project and briefly describe the help given.

 Alana Gill – Helped me make sure my paper was well-written and helped me whenever I was
struggling with my topic.
 Nicole Dodson – Helped me throw around ideas, helped with names, and paper writing
 Maylea Beasley – Helped throw around ideas, helped with names, and paper writing
 Melissa Disher – 2nd Consultant. Helped me throw around idea and brought me back to reality
 Jennifer Hill – Consultant. Introduced this project topic to me and helped me throughout the
whole journey
 Christine Gammage (Mom) – Made sure I was doing my work and helped me read over my paper
to make sure it was of the best quality.

7. How does your completed project compare to the picture you had in mind when you started the
project? Explain the reason behind any changes from your proposal.

I am proud of my project and what I have accomplished, however, it does not compare to what I had
originally had in mind. I really wanted to go to Ocracoke island (which I wrote about in my paper)
and help them rebuild after hurricane Dorian. I realize now that it was farfetched to begin with, but I
still think it sounds fun and I really wish I could have done it. It would have had an impact on the
people who came and we would have left an impact on Ocracoke.

8. If given the opportunity, explain what you would have done differently now that you speak from
experience?
I would have put in more effort to make sure that I did my project before March 13 th. It was a struggle
to try and figure out how to convert our project virtually in a manner that would still have a decent
audience. I think I would have tried to reach out to more people and see if I could have made
anything else work.

9. Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself?

I learned that I am really interested in emergency management. While I was working in the VB office this
summer, I was contemplating on whether I would want to pursue a career in it. I decided to go the Vet
route, but I will keep this one in my pocket just in case. I learned that I could make something and be
proud of it. All of this came together all the sudden and I am glad that I was able to accomplish this.

10. What grade would you give yourself on the project? Justify the evaluation of your grade in at
least 25 words.

Grade: 85

Justification:

I would grade this an 85 because I did put in a lot of effort and I am proud of it. However, I do not think it
reached its full potential and did not get as large as an outreach as I would have liked it to. Other than
that, I think I put out good information on topics that not a lot of people know a lot about.
