THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION
Education has become vastly important all over the globe. It is no longer a luxury
that a person can choose not to engage in, but because it has become a necessity
everyone must indulge in. Most establishments, corporations and businesses are
seeking for educated employees, even for the lowest positions of an established
organization. Hence, everyone needs to graduate from college to have that competitive
edge when applying for a job. This have been the resulted to more young people doing
everything they can so as to finish their studies, even at the expense of having a part-
time job while attending classes, just to get by and graduate in time.
Oftentimes, a student is a social being who plays the role of a model, leader,
motivator, and inspiration. He is exposed to academic and non-academic activities in
schools that enable him to strive to become productive, competent and efficient in order
to do better at school.
The student is supposed to possess the necessary preparation, attitude, and
skills in order to have a successful student in life. He must be ready to face all
challenges given by the managers, workmates, professors, classmates, friends, and
family. Furthermore, he must know how to balance his/her time in his student life. It is
necessary to develop proper time-management even with a heavy strain added on his
back because college life is more demanding than high school which needs to be more
independent. However beside these roles any student can be willing to work on it part-
time job just to finish college and to finish their studies.
On the other hand, Part time job is after done by students while studying. He
earns to support himself while attending classes. He uses his time to work and earn his
daily expenses. Students usually have work job in Jollibee, McDonalds, and other fast-
food chains. It can also be a job in schools or other homes where their bosses are the
one paying for their school expenses.
The University of Bohol is no exception. There are a vast number of students
who are working in the office at the same time enrolled in this University. This study tries
to determine whether part-time students perceive that working while studying has any
effect on their grades, specifically those enrolled in the summer of school year 2017-
2018.

RATIONALE
This study shall also determines the factors which contribute to such effects,
which includes, but not limited to, time management, crisis management and attitude.
The findings of this study will be used as basis for proposed intervention measures.
Theoretical Background
There had been different theories on the effects of working part-time or the
grades of such students. This includes the following:
Traditional Pedagogical Theory- According to the Theory of Traditional
Pedagogical, major impetus for the development of the student involvement theory was
my exasperation at the tendency of many academicians to treat the student as a kind of
“black box.” On the input end of this black box are the various policies and programs of
a college or university; on the output end are various types of achievement measures
such as the GPA or scores on standardized tests. This theory has mostly developed as
a result of the teacher’s own schooling. This theory views the following; knowledge,
learning, teaching.

Part-time employment of Pedagogical Theory holds more promise than

Neoclassical Theory. There are two reasons for this. First Pedagogical theory builds on
choices made along continuous spectra, whereas the choice between part-time and full-
time employment is a discrete choice for employers. Second the labor market
persistently fails to clear, that is to equalize for labor supply and demand.
Partial Inclusion Theory- .This theory suggests that those employees w8ho are
less included in the organization will also have poorer job attitude, and these job
attitudes are likely to affect-turnover intentions and actual turnover. (Allport,1993),
However, part-time work arrangement perspectives also receive some support as there
were significant differences in organizational commitment and turnover intentions for
part-time students.
Related Literature/Studies
Parallel literatures are herein gleaned to amplify the contents of this study. The
impact of part-time jobs on student performance has been well established in these
days. But few works have ever studied the effect of doing part-time, jobs on student
performance. Part-time jobs have been limited to the hours so that the students can
manage or balance their studies by doing part-time jobs, but some of the students are in
full-timer when the manager can see that the student have not loaded all of the subject,
the student can do the full-time job has ever be satisfied. Some scholars of a University
Argue that part-time job can affect the grades of a student.
It is a great opportunity to the student to experience part-time job. The
employment profile includes the reasons for working, number of jobs held, the types and
the qualities of part-time jobs, whether or not the part-time job is related to degree study
and the number of hours worked.
These are the following benefits of part-time jobs for students (Darlena Cunha)
namely; money, budgeting, time-management and experience.
Earning an income can boost each student’s confidence. Other students need to
work through school to afford their tuition fee. Still, the money will be theirs to spend as
they wish, and they will appreciate it more because they worked for it. Students earning
their own money get lessons on spending wisely. They may be less likely to spend their
hard-earned money frivolously and learn to delay gratification to pay for necessities,
such as text books and rent.
Working students have less free time than non-working students. Working
students have to measure out their time to make sure they can complete every task
expected of them on deadline. They weigh their priorities to finish their responsibilities.
Having a part-time job shows that the student is at least somewhat an accustomed to
the professional world, which will make the transition that much easier.
One of the advantages of a working student is you can have extra more money to
pay your tuition fees and the disadvantages is some of your studies will be left behind
because of part-time job.
Having a part-time job while pursuing a degree is hard work but the benefits are
greater than the amount of a paycheck. Students who work during their college careers
may have better time-management skills which they can apply it to their daily lives.
They earn money for their expenses, while gaining experiences in the workplace which
is an advantage to the future career.
Unfortunately, working full-time while also studying full-time clearly requires a lot of
effort. While many students and workers routinely feel tired and stressed by their work,
as a full-time student-worker one will likely encounter stress and fatigue levels well
beyond those of most of than most of their colleagues perhaps for the first time in their
life. Students may find themselves planning and accounting for every day, from the few
hours can block off for sleep to the 45 minutes of their commute their lunch break (both
may become extra time for studying). However, it allows them to maintain the job and
salary Associated benefits while also progressing in their studies. Students may depend
on their job for their own or for family’s health insurance or students may need the
income for full time work to support them and still be able to afford financially in school.
According to (Ford and Bosworth 1995), student employment is treated as a
homogeneous experience regardless of the nature of part-time work and the effects of
part-time jobs have been limited to the hours and earnings of student employment.
Some scholars argue that a widely drawn employment profile is needed in order to
compare the relative importance of various characteristics of student employment on
student outcome.
On the other hand, According to (Hartley 2002; Bradley 2006) student employment
has been treated as a homogeneous category in most previous studies. This literature
review demonstrates that instead of being homogeneous student employment is quite a
heterogeneous experience for all involved in the sense that the effects of doing part-
time jobs on students’ academic or social outcomes vary depending on the nature and
the extent of their part-time work, work intensity and the reasons to take it.

According to Rothstein (2007) this part–time employment among full-time students

in UK is an important form of lab our market participation. It stated that almost 27% of
students pursuing a full-time education reported having a part-time job during the school
term. However, these focus mainly in the work experience of college and University
students, while less attention is given to the employment.
Another study was conducted by Kusuoko (2006); Matsuyama and Hida (2008)
state that students who have taken part-time have a higher level of awareness for
employment than those who have not done so, and that part-time job included practical
work experience were particularly beneficial. This study will guide students to which
path they choose in their future career. Having a part-time job enhances their skills
which help them achieve their career goals. Trainings and seminars are lifelong
learning’s which serves as main key to success.
This study thoughts that work experience are beneficial to the students part-time.
Part-time job will help them to achieve career goals and guide the students in choosing
their future career.
According to (Kalenkoski and Pabilonia, 2009) that time spent working reduces the
time available for educational activity and therefore could lead to lower educational
achievements, possibly resulting in school withdrawals. If their jobs may exceed from 20
hours above, it may cause damaging to their academic success, it will be more stressful
for them and the same time, they will usually feel pressured. Overworking may
decrease their GPA that could lead to dropout rates at school.
It is said that being a part-time can give a lower grades and can lead for more
dropouts and withdrawal of subject if they exceed in more working hours. They are
more stressful and lose their academic success.
According to Derous and Ryan (2008), student part-time employment in general
has a positive effect on their personal development in terms of self-reported and
emotional growth. They may be able to support their needs financial and students who
work are more confident and possess better time-management skills than students who
are not employed. They are more confident because they are expose to the job at the
same time it will help them boost their knowledge and skills because companies
nowadays have trainings and workshops. And they are able to develop their
interpersonal relationship to others; it might be in the workforce or in school. And
working students may be able to balance their time well.
They say that student part-time are more knowledgeable in time-management
and they also develop their interpersonal relationship to others school or workforce.
Student part-time have more knowledge and skills because of trainings and seminars
than students who are full-time or not employed.
Another study was conducted by Kramar and Skans, (2007) that most students
estimate the effect of part-time work on academic attainment, they estimate profit
models with two simultaneous equations accounting for part-time working while studying
and for success on the final exam.
According to Dustman and Van Soest (2007) that students part-time labor supply
will help to engage their schedule performance and for the decision to drop-out. Mostly
students work their school performance as well as the design to stay on in education
beyond the minimum age of leaving.
Another study was According to Montmarquette et al. It showed that Canadian
High School students, an intensive regular job more than 30 hours per week significally
reduces the probabilities of performing well at school and staying-on in education.
And According to Furr and Elling 29% of the students working 30-39 hours per
week and 39% of those students working full time indicated that work had a negative
and frequent impact on their academic progress. The above-mentioned related studies
are relevant to this current study, as they reflect the effect of grades of part-time and
working student. However, the researchers believe that there is a research gap since no
study has been conducted to identify the effect of grades of the UB CHMTN Students as
well as the management techniques they are applying. Hence, the researchers
considered to conduct this study.
Research flow:

This research will started with identifying the problem and its scope such as in
this problem and Class Performance (those which affect performance) in the classroom
and assignments outside the classroom) and Extracurricular (those which are
Associated with education outside the conventional classroom setting) Theoretical
Background will be conducted includes the following Traditional Pedagogical Theory
and Partial Inclusion Theory.

Research Flow

A review of the ref1lated literature was made to determine what Related Studies
have been conducted that all working students inside University of Bohol in terms of
physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, time management. Research method attempts to
handle the relationship and it is concerned with identifying conditions. A survey of the
experience of working students in higher education which collect details of age, sex
,course , education, qualifications and employment.

THE PROBLEM:
Statement of the Problem
The main purpose of the study was to know the problems and concerns
encountered by working of students of University of Bohol School Year 2017-2018.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following sub-questions:
1. What are the profiles of the student respondents in the context of?
1.1 Agef1
1.2 Sex
1.3 Course
2. What are the problems, and concerns that they encountered in terms of the
following?
2.1 Physical health
2.2 Emotional

NULL HYPOTHESIS
There is no problem and concerns encountered in terms of physical health, emotional,
spiritual, financif1al, and time management of the working students.
There is no significant degree of relationship between the profile and concerns among
working students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Students are not prohibited from being working students for the reason that is
continuously due to school facilities expenses and the like. This study can benefit
students who are in working while studying. To be aware of the problems and concerns
they encountered in terms of physical health, emotional, spiritual, financial, and time
management. By knowing these problems students who prefer work and study can
handle the situation he/she entering. Also the non-working and faculty members will be
able to understand the situation of the working students and help them to pursue their
studies.
This study can provide an idea to the people in solving problems and concerns
encountered by working students.
Identified with coping mechanisms against such as well. Likewise, quality learning
results in quality performance which contributes to higher achievement
The results of this study will benefit the following:
Classmates-this study may help the classmates of the part-time students to encourage
themselves to be independent that can support on their own just to finish study and they
will encourage studying seriously and managing their time.
Employer-this study may help the with the services provided by the working students
Parents- This study will help the parents of the part-time students in sending their kids
to school. These students become productive members of society, and will echo the
realization that poverty is not a hindrance to education.
School- this study will help the school by the tuition fees paid by the part-time students.
Regular student- This study may help regular students think that being a working or
part-timer student is not a reason not to study seriously. So this study encourages
regular student to be independent as well, and how to manage and use time valuable.
Regular students’ parents- This study will help the parents of regular students to grow
their children’s independent and will encourage parents to force their children’s develop
their skills for preparation of coming work.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Design
Quantitative method was used in this study. It is concerned with identifying
conditions which the respondent most relate the situation.
Upon the advice of the research teacher, a letter of intent was sent to the
different schools in Tagbilaran upon the approval of the College Dean, questionnaires
were then distributed to the students concerned on specified dates. Ample time was
given to the respondents to answer after which retrieval of the said questionnaires was
done by the researchers.

Environment

The University of Bohol is the venue of the study. This is only a walking distance
both from the Cogon Public Market. It is bounded by the following streets: on the North,
Dr. Cecilio Putong Street, on the South, Rafael Palma Street; on the East, Carlos P.
Garcia Avenue and on the West, Remolador Street.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher of this study shall followed the protocol in generating data. The tittle,
significance of the study, statement of the problem, and methodology shall be presented
for ethics review to the University of Bohol Review Ethics board (UBREB). When
certified ethical, letters to every deans in University Of Bohol in the study.

Data analysis
The survey questionnaire were gathered, numbered and coded into spread sheet
using Microsoft Excel 10. For the appropriate translation of each variable, a code book
will prepared by the researcher. For the ease of analysis of the figures, statistical
packages for social sciences version 20 willl be used to compute the frequencies,
percentages, weighted mean and composited mean.

Pearson’s Product of Correlation

The correlation coefficient is a measure that determines the degree to which two
variables' movements are associated. The range of values for the correlation coefficient
is -1.0 to 1.0. If a calculated correlation is greater than 1.0 or less than -1.0, a mistake
has been made. A correlation of -1.0 indicates a perfect negative correlation while a
correlation of 1.0 indicates a perfect positive correlation. This will be used after we
distributed the questionnaire to the respondents.

RESPONDENTS
The respondents of the study are the working students of University of Bohol who
enrolled in the summer for S.Y. 2017-2018.
