Assignment On Project Crashing: Activities Normal Time (Weeks) Crash Time Normal Cost Crash Cost Imm. Predec

The document discusses crashing the schedule of a project with activities A through L. It provides the normal and crash times and costs for each activity. The key points are: 1) The project's normal completion time is 260 days. 2) The probability of finishing in 270 days is 70.88%. 3) To crash the schedule to 250 or 240 days, activities A, C, D, and G should be crashed. This would cost an additional $21,900 or $28,400 respectively due to increased crashing costs.

Assignment on project crashing

Student’s name: SAMRIT CHANVIREAK

ID: e20160566
Group: I4.GIM.Indu

Activities Normal Crash Time Normal Crash Cost Imm.

Time Cost Predec
(weeks)
A 4 3 2000 2600 --
B 2 1 2200 2800 --
C 3 3 500 500 --
D 8 4 2300 2600 A
E 6 3 900 1200 B
F 3 2 3000 4200 C
G 4 2 1400 2000 D,E

1. What is the project completion time?

2. What is the cost required for completing the project?
3. If we want to reduce the completion date by one week, what activity should we
choose to crash?
4. What is the maximum time that can be crashed and how much would cost increase?

Solution

1. Find the project completion time

Institute of technology of Cambodia GIM.I4.Industrial

ADG= 16
BFG=12

So, we choose ADG as a critical path.

Therefore, the project completion time is 16 weeks.

2. Find the cost required for completing the project

Activities Normal Time (weeks) Normal Cost

A 4 2000
B 2 2200
C 3 500
D 8 2300
E 6 900
F 3 3000
G 4 1400
12300

Therefore, the cost required for. Completing the project is 12300.

3. Find the activity to crash if we want to reduce the completion date by one week

In order to choose a suitable activity to crush, we need to choose:

 Activities on critical path
 Activities which has the lowest crashing cost

( Crash cost−Normal cost )

Carsh cost per week =
( Normal time−Crash time)

Normal Crash
Crash Normal Crash Imm. Critical
Activities Time cost per
Time Cost Cost Predec path?
(weeks) week
A 4 3 2000 2600 600 -- yes
B 2 1 2200 2800 600 -- no
C 3 3 500 500 0 -- no
D 8 4 2300 2600 75 A yes
E 6 3 900 1200 100 B no
F 3 2 3000 4200 1200 C no
G 4 2 1400 2000 300 D, E yes

We wish to reduce the completion date by one week, from this table, it indicates that activity
D is the best chosen because it is in the critical path and cost the cheapest price 75 per week
amount all activities.

4. Find the maximum time that can be crushed and cost

Activities Crush Time (weeks)

A 3
D 4
G 2

Therefore, the maximum crash time is 9 weeks.

B 2 2200
C 3 500
D 4 2600
E 5 1000

G 2 2000

Therefore, the total cost will increase to 13900.

C A 50 60 100 4000
D C 30 50 100 1900

I H 20 25 60 2000
J H 8 10 12 6000
K J .1 .1 .1 0
L I,K 20 25 60 4500
1. How long does it take to complete the project?
2. What is the probability of finishing in 270 days?
3. If it is necessary to crash to 250 or 240 days, what is the cost to increase? Assuming
that the optimistic time can be used as crash time.

Solution

1. Find the duration for completing the project

Activity Optimistic Most likely Pessimistic Expected time

A 20 30 40 30
B 20 65 80 60
C 50 60 100 65
D 30 50 100 55
E 25 30 35 30
F 0.1 0.1 0.1 0.1
G 25 30 35 30
H 10 20 30 20
I 20 25 60 30
J 8 10 12 10
K 0.1 0.1 0.1 0.1
L 20 25 60 30

We find the expected time by using formula of:

a+ 4 m+ b
t=
6
Which a: Optimistic time
m: Most likely time
b: Pessimistic time

ABEFGHIL= 230
ACDGHJKL= 240
ACDGHIL=260
ACDGHJKL=240

So, we choose ACDGHIL as critical path.

Therefore, we need 260 days for completing the project.

2. Find the probability of finishing in 270 days

Project variance

σ 2p=11.11+ 69.44+136.11+11.11+44.44 +44.44=319.44

Project standard deviation

σ P= √ Project variance
¿ √ 319.44=17.8728

The expected completion time is 260 days

(270−260 )
Z=
σP
(270−260 )
Z= =0.55
17.8728

ϕ ( Z )=ϕ ( 0.55 ) =0.7088

The probability of finishing in 270 days is 70.88%

3. if it is necessary to crash to 250 or 240 days, Find the cost to increase. Assuming
that the optimistic time can be used as crash time.

Activity Expected time Crash Time Days can be crushed Crush cost/day
A 30 20 10 1500
C 65 50 15 4000
D 55 30 25 1900
G 30 25 5 2500
H 20 10 10 2000
J 10 8 2 6000
K 0.1 0.1 0 0
L 30 20 10 400

 If we want to crush project from 260 days to 250 days:

 We will crush in activity A for 10days from 30 to 20days because activity A
has the cheapest crash cost per day.
 The cost will be increase (10x1500) = 15000

 If we want to crush project from 260 days to 240 days:

 We will crush in activity A for 10 days from 30 to 20days, L for 10 days from
55 to 45days.

 The cost will be increase [(10x1500) + (10x1900)] = 34000
