Scenario 1:

• Did Alexis do anything wrong?

Yes, ethically Alexis did wrong thing by using someone’s authentication
information to access the internet for doing her research projects in high
school. She used the information without that person’s knowledge. So, she
cheated both the college authorities as well as that person.

• Who benefited from Alexis’s course of action?

Alexis is the only one who benefited from her course of action unless she
decides to use her knowledge to help the poor in the future.

• Who was hurt by Alexis’s course of action?

No one was hurt by Alexis’ course of action. Although she used the other
college’s resources without their permission but she didn’t used those
resources to harm anyone physically or emotionally.

• Did Alexis have an unfair advantage over her high school classmates?
Technically Alexis had an unfair advantage over her high school classmates
as she was able to access

• Would any of your answers change if it turns out Alexis did not win a
college scholarship after all?
No, my response would not change regardless of her outcome as a wrong
deed does not get washed away by the success or failure. Her action will
always be a reminder of her failure to look for a more ethical solution & her
willingness to take unethical shortcut to achieve her goal.

• Are there better ways Alexis could have achieved her objective?
Yes, she should have begun with approaching her college to find a solution
to her problems as the college is primarily responsible for providing
adequate resources to all students. She could have founded a group of
students from those same lines for the old PCs in her college to brainstorm
for a solution. She could have approached the other college she exploited
and requested them to let her use the computers etc. She could have bought a
used PC or bought one in instalments. The possibilities are endless as long
as there is willingness to look for one.

• What additional information, if any, would help you answer the previous
questions?
Additional information like if she had access to a public library, her daily
routine timings, if she had some other means of transportation, her & her
family income etc. Would have helped
Scenario 2:

• Did the antispam organization do anything wrong?

No, ethically they didn’t do anything wrong because the amount of spam
messages drops by 25 percent, but every decision has consequences. It
means that regardless of what you decide, there will be things that you like
and others you don’t. As it is clear from the given scenario that due to their
actions several users are unable to communicate with their acquaintances.

• Did the ISPs that refused to accept email from the blacklisted ISPs do
anything wrong?
Yes, although number of spam messages are reduced but several users are
unable to send emails to their friends and business associates. The
organization might have come up with better anti-spam techniques.
• Who benefited from the organization’s action?
Only themselves
There are two groups that gets the benefit of this action. First the
organization itself because it helps the organization to reduce the amount of
spam messages. Second the users because it protects them from getting spam
messages.
• Who was hurt by the organization’s action?
Users because many ISPs refuses to accept email from blacklisted ISPs, so
several users are unable to send emails to their friends and business
associates.
• Could the organization have achieved its goals through a better course of
action?
Yes, they may have thought of better anti-spam techniques that could benefit
both the organization and users.
• What additional information, if any, would help you answer the previous
questions?
Additional information like organization’s financial records and better anti-
spam techniques would have helped

Scenario 3:

• Did the East Dakota State Police do anything wrong?

East Dakota State Police did not do anything wrong because it reduces the
speed of motorists on the road. In addition, it can reduce accident rates. By
installing the video cameras, it also helps to discipline the driver to speed
limit.
• Who benefited from the actions of the EDSP?
There are two groups that get the benefit of the action. First, Federal Bureau
of Investigation (FBI) because it helps the organization to detect real
location of the terrorist of their wanted list. Second, the drivers because it
helps them to obey the road safety rules.
• Who was harmed by the actions of the EDSP?
Drivers who drive a vehicle for speeding and failing to comply road safety
rules
• What other courses of action could the EDSP have taken to achieve its
objectives?
They may have thought of running a campaign because it brings awareness
about the impacts of speeding to all the drivers

• What additional information, if any, would help you answer the previous
questions?
Additional information like financial budget is necessary to run campaign. In
this way, the drivers stay more alert and obey traffic regulations

Scenario 4:

• Should you recommend release of the product next week?

I will not recommend the product or the software to produce next week,
because the product still have bugs and can cause a problem to the customer.
The company should understand the problems so that the user or the
customer will not give a bad review or comment to the product or the
software. Although other company will release the product soon, better be
wait for the product or software to be ready for release so that the dignity of
the company will not going bad. And even if the other company had released
their product, the team of the software engineer can improve more on these
products by see their product review.
• Who will benefit if the company follows your recommendation?
For me, I think the one of the most benefits from my decision is obviously
my company that will benefits in the long run because if we released to
early, the product probably has some problem or bug when being released
and used by the customer, but my decision has its own risk, because this
move will probably help the competition from other company, as when they
will releasing their product first to the public and will not have us that has
similar product to compete with making them has a big advantage ahead of
us
• Who will be harmed if the company follows your recommendation?
From the scenario that given, it is possible that our company could be
harmed if we release the product before it is ready. But, for my opinion, I
don’t think it is ok to release a product if it is not yet ready to be sold
because it will damage the dignity of our company ,we might lose our
customer and worst part our company will bankrupt and affect my career as
the software engineer.
• Do you have an obligation to any group of people that may be affected by
your decision?
I think we do have an obligation to the major corporation we told our
product was ready to. However, this is a hit we will have to take since the
product was not ready. We will try to make a fair deal with this corporation
and try to start our business honestly instead of lying to them that could be
very harmful to our company’s future. Rather than delivering a product that
may fail later, it’s better to build trust between clients so that our product
will be known of its quality, not fast delivery. Besides, it is still unknown
whether the other coming product released by other company will have their
product fully functioning and free of bugs. In case their product released
sooner than ours, as a professional senior software engineer, it is better to
compete in healthy environment, to see which product is better in
performance.
• What additional information, if any, would help you answer the previous
questions?
Additional information like corporation name would have helped.

There’s are some additional information to support the previous question

given, first one for the company name and strength, question state that we
are needed to postpone our product instead of publishing it on the market as
soon as possible, and the answer is yes. This is because our company’s sales
force who lead the major corporation knew what could happen if the product
is publish early with some bugs, our sales force state that why publish
something that is not strong to attract customer yet attract customer to
complaint our product and comparing it with our competitor. This will not
just give a bad name to our company reputation but also will have a
decreased in customer because, customer need to wait for the update if there
is an update, and to download the first version is a bit scared for the
customer to use it since they have bugs and error. From the above statement,
our company sales force has stated to complete and fix all the bugs and error
and if the product has been published, there is an update so that customer
can feel much comfortable and not have hesitation to the first version
product. Talking about update, surely if the first version run smoothly
customer couldn’t wait and spread the rumors for an update to our product
and this will automatically increase the customer rate.
