Wireless Communication
Assignment 3
Instructions:
- You can type or handwrite your answer. Handwriting should be legible, if used.
Q1. [6 points] Suppose that you have a Wi-Fi network whose MAC layers use CSMA/CA with RTS/CTS.
If you know that the SIFS is µ, DIFS is 3 µ, propagation delay is 2µ, and each of RTS and CTS is 5 µ,
respectively, where µ is a fixed period of time. Answer the following:
Explanation: The communication between sender and receiver in the given system will be like this:
1. For DIFS(distributed inter-frame space) the sender waits before sending the RTS packet
2. Sender will sends RTS(request to send) request
3. The receiver waits for SIFS(short inter-frame space) , after receiving RTS packet
4. If sender ready to receive packet , the receivers sends a CTS(clear to send)packet to the sender
5. Sender receives the CTS packet, it waits for SIFS and then send data to receiver.
6. The receiver waits for SIFS after receiving the data then send ACK to data.
Part a)
Calculate the earliest time for the receiver to send the CTS message?
Answer:
The earliest time for the receiver to send the CTS message = DIFS+RTS+ Time to propagate RTS+SIFS
= 3µ+5µ+2µ+ µ
= 11 µ
Part b)
If the length of the data packet is 1000 µ, calculate the shortest time for the receiver to send
the ACK signal?
Answer:
= DIFS + RTS + Time propagate to RTS + SIFS + CFS + Time to propagate to CTS + SIFS+ Length of
data + Time to propagate + SIFS
After getting data and SIFS, the receiver sends ACK to the sender after 1022 µ.
Part c)
Answer:
SIFS cannot be 0. As it is the time required by the node to converts receiving mode to sending
mode. So it should be greater than 0.
Q2. [4 points]
Consider different Wi-Fi networks providing internet services in the same place (Let’s say at
your home). Each Wi-Fi network is operating its own Access Point (AP) and having its own IP address
block. Can you explain what happens when two mobile devices (smart phone, laptop, tablet, etc),
each associated with a one of the above-mentioned Wi-Fi networks, attempt to transmit at the same
time given that:
Part (a)
The two Access Point (AP1 and AP2) operate over the same channel (bandwidth)?
Answer:
When there are two or more APs or wireless clients in the same range with each other and if
they do run on the same channel, they will form a collision domain, and only one device in the collision
can transmit at one point. If the network load is very light, if the AP is set to the same channel, there is
not much problem. The biggest benefit of having a single channel is that the switching time of the
roaming client is zero, but since each AP will transmit on the same channel, the channel cannot be
changed to avoid interference
Part b)
Answer:
When two APs are on different channels, it does affect the explosion of the channel, so what
happens that CSMA / CA may not be detected the traffic from the neighbors or it can still chance for
interference and the frame is lost. Also known as interference, because one device does interfere with
another. If we use the channel then we can avoid the node problem. But rather to use one channel use
multiple channel in case of excessive load
