Module 1 Exercises Part 1

The student is taking the course to learn how to convert their creative ideas into books, as they struggle with writing skills. They identify key barriers as a lack of writing discipline, difficulty with dialogue, and developing side characters. To overcome these, the student plans to dedicate three morning hours daily to writing and reading more books to study dialogue. Their goal is to complete a first novel during the course that they can feel proud of, even if not publication-worthy. They outline a weekly schedule for writing sessions and reading to improve.

Exercise 1:

Why am I taking this course?:

• I have a lot of creativity and tend to daydream a lot, however, I’m not particularly skilled at
writing and as such thought, this course would allow me to acquire the skillset I believe is
necessary for me to convert all these ideas into books.

What are the barriers I need to overcome to write your novel?:

• Firstly, I think I lack the discipline to write every single day.
• I struggle a lot with picturing and creating dialogue.
• I struggle a lot with creating side characters.

What will I do to overcome them:?

• I want to dedicate three hours every morning to writing, if I get in this schedule and stick to
it I should be able to overcome my problem regarding discipline.
• Read more books to try and deconstruct how others create dialogue.

What would be the most exciting part about finishing my novel?:

• I consider my first novel to be somewhat of a trial, I intentionally selected two proposals
that I have the least attachment to, and that I believe aren’t good enough for the standards I
would like to one day be associated with. The most exciting part of finishing the novel
worked on for the duration of this course, would be if it actually turned into something I
would read, and something that I could be proud of.
