P-FAS User Manual

This 3 sentence summary provides an overview of the key points about the Parameterized Fragility Analysis Software user manual: The user manual describes software that uses a response database and parameterized structural characteristics to generate fragility curves for different structures, allowing engineers to assess structural fragility without additional analysis. The software requires the user to select an earthquake scenario, input the structural response parameters, determine limit states and uncertainty, then runs the fragility analysis to output mean responses, fragility curves, and the numeric curve values to the clipboard.

Overview
The Parameterized Fragility Analysis Software is a tool for the construction of fragility
curves for a wide range of structures with known response parameters. The fragility curves
are constructed using parameterized structural response characteristics (stiffness, strength
and ductility) and the Response Database.
The Response Database is an accumulation of pre-analyzed inelastic response of
structures with a wide range of stiffness and strength. Therefore, with pre-determined
stiffness, strength and a set of records, the database provides mean and standard deviation
of inelastic response quantities of the corresponding structure without the need for further
analysis. The effect of ductility variation is included by changing the limit states in the
calculation of cumulative conditional probability.

Analysis Procedure
Overview of the graphic user interface is shown in Figure 1. The numbers in the latter
figure represents the analysis procedure.
1. Open the response database for the selected earthquake scenario.
2. Input response parameters of the structure.
3. Input limit states and uncertainty (epistemic uncertainty quantified by the user).
4. Run fragility analysis.
5. Mean and standard deviation of maximum displacements
6. Plot of fragility curves and grid of associated numeric values
7. Copy the numeric values to Windows clipboard.

1. Select an earthquake scenario
Press the button [Select Earthquake Scenario], #1 in Figure 1, then the below dialog box
(Figure 2) will appear to select an earthquake scenario.

Figure 2. Dialog box for selection of an earthquake scenario

Currently available earthquake scenarios are three artificial record sets as follows:
(1) Memphis_lowland_85_sc1
(2) Memphis_lowland_85_sc2
(3) Memphis_lowland_85_sc3
Each set consists of ten ground motions that were synthesized to simulate an earthquake
event for lowland soil profile in Memphis, TN, USA and generated as a part of Mid-
America Earthquake (MAE) Center research project HD-1 (Hazard Definition). Details are
discussed in (Romero et al. 2001*).

2. Determine response parameters of the structure
Determine response parameters of the structure by typing appropriate values as shown
in Figure 3.

(1) Period: 2π m / k ; (0.01 ~ 4 sec.)

(2) Strength ratio: the ratio of lateral yield strength (P) to the total weight (W) of the
structure; (0.03 ~ 0.3).
(3) Post-yield stiffness: the ratio of the post-yield stiffness (αk) to the elastic stiffness
(k); (-0.05 ~ 0.2).
(4) Viscous damping ratio; 0 ~ 5%

3. Determine limit states and uncertainty

Five limit states are pre-determined by the analyst as shown in Figure 5.

Figure 5. Limit states input [# 3 in Figure 1]

Sources of uncertainties can be categorized as (i) inherent randomness (aleatory
uncertainty source) and (ii) errors of ignorance and simplification (epistemic uncertainty
source). While variation due to the former can be quantified by standard deviation of
response variables, estimating the latter effect is complex and affected by various sources
such as modeling errors, measurement errors and statistical errors. Therefore quantification
of epistemic uncertainty is left at user's hand in this program. Coefficient of variation
(COV) estimated by the analyst may be entered at the below text box.

4. Run Fragility Analysis

Press the button [Run], #4 in Figure 1, then the software perform the fragility analysis
based on input parameters and selected response database. The cumulative probability of
lognormal distribution F(∆LS) can be calculated by

⎛ ln ∆ LS − λ ⎞ ∆ LS 1 ⎡ 1 ⎛ ln y − λ ⎞ 2 ⎤
F(∆ LS ) = Φ⎜⎜ ⎟⎟ = ∫ exp ⎢− ⎜⎜ ⎟⎟ ⎥dy
⎝ ξt ⎠
0
2 πξ t y ⎢⎣ 2 ⎝ ξ t ⎠ ⎥⎦

Analysis results will be obtained after reading the response database, as shown in
Figure 7. Fragility curves corresponding the predetermined five limit states will appear with
a grid filled with numeric values (#6 in Figure 1). Plots of mean and standard deviation of
maximum responses are also represented (#5 in Figure 1). By pressing the [Copy to
clipboard] button (#7 in Figure 1), the numeric values of fragility curves will be exported to
the Windows Clipboard. This can be pasted to other spreadsheet applications such as
Microsoft Excel.
