The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of a place on the humidity in
a location. Humidity is the amount of water air can hold. During the experiment, we had two
trials, and went to three different places in the school: the courtyard, the science classroom and
the hydroponics classroom. We used a sling psychrometer to measure the temperature of a wet
bulb and a dry bulb. The purpose of this is the dry bulb uses the regular temperature and the wet
bulb is lower because of the effect of evaporation. In the courtyard, it was a moist, rainy day and
the average temperatures for the dry bulb was 54.5° Fahrenheit, while the wet bulb had an
average temperature of 50° Fahrenheit. The two readings of the relative humidity were 78% and
71%. The classroom had a cool breeze because of the air conditioning machine, and the average
temperature of the dry bulb 68.5° Fahrenheit, while the wet bulb was 65° Fahrenheit. The
readings of relative humidity were 91% and 60%. Finally, the hydroponics room is hot and moist
to water the plants, and they average dry bulb temperature was 71° Fahrenheit and the wet bulb
had 65° Fahrenheit. The relative humidity readings were 75% and 50%. The different humidity
readings were because two sling psychrometers were used, a cheap, old one, and a new, unused
one. Because they are two separate sling psychrometers, the effectiveness of each is different.
My hypothesis was correct because I believed that the cooler the air, the less water vapor it could
hold, making it more humid because it has less room for water. My findings correlated well with
the research I did because I used an online website and a book. In the website, I found this,
“Shaded area has higher relative humidity as the cooler air has less capacity for water vapor.” In
the book, it said relatively the same thing, and my experiment, though slightly off, did
correspond with that information. The experiment was slightly off because we used two different
sling psychrometers, one a older, and another a newer innovative one. This changes the results
because now there is no longer one independent variable. There are two because we change the
place we measure and we changed what we measured with. In this experiment, if we were to do
it again, I would suggest to use the same psychrometer. I do not believe you should switch
between an old and another old one because this still changes the results and makes them
inconsistent. Instead of doing this experiment, someone could also do a different experiment,
such as measuring the humidity levels in different locations. For example, going somewhere and
measuring the humidity like at an amusement park or a cave. In conclusion, I did benefit from
this experiment, but I would have used the same sling psychrometer because otherwise, it
changes the results all together.
