INTRODUCTION

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept that it is the responsibility of the


corporations to be socially responsible to contribute towards economic, social and
environmental development that creates positive impact on society at large.
India was the first country to make corporate social responsibility mandatory with the
Companies Act, 2013. Every company which either has a net worth of Rs 500 crore or a
turnover of Rs 1,000 crore or net profit of Rs 5 crore, needs to spend at least 2% of its
average net profit for the previous three financial years on Corporate social responsibility
activities.

The Reliance Group wants to impact lives of people by its Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) initiatives. Their CSR policy is aimed at improving lives and livelihood for building a
stronger and inclusive India. Their CSR endeavours being with respect to their philosophy;
"The Company's vision is to create value for the nation, enhance quality of life across the
entire socio-economic spectrum and build an inclusive India. Reliance endeavours to create
replicable and scalable models of development through an integrated approach and
maximising societal value for all." is the commitment to improve the quality of life of people,
by empowering them, through innovative and sustainable solutions. The three core principles
i.e., Scale, Impact and Sustainability guides the company's CSR projects.
“At Reliance, business priorities co-exist with social commitment and our activities support
inclusive growth” said by Mukesh Ambani also resonates with their philosophy.

Objectives
The main purpose of Corporate Social Responsibility of a company or an organisation is to
improve society in some way or the other. It includes donating money to nonprofits,
working towards sustainable development in the rural and urban areas, improving schools
and imparting education in the remote areas , healthcare, sanitisation,water conservation, in
the areas of sports etc.
The major objective of CSR activities is building a relationship of mutual trust with the
society. A variety of resources necessary foe company’s activities and businesses like land,
energy, raw materials, human resources are obtained from the society. Hence companies
should build a relationship with the society.
Another objective of Csr is to build emotional resonance with women around the world.
Companies try to work for developmental activities and engage women in decision making
and management.
Promoting environment friendly business activities reflects that protecting the environment
is also one of the major goals of companies.
Community involvement and development-Development of local communities is an
important aspect of company’s corporate social responsibility. Social initiatives should be
taken that can build relationships with the community and act as a medium of
communication between the two.
EDUCATION

Reliance Industries Limited wants to provide education, training and skill enhancement to
improve the quality of living and livelihood through scholarships merit based to economically
backward and specially disabled students, promoting higher education through setting up and
supporting universities, facilitating sports for development of students in both urban and rural
settings skill development and vocational training.

DHIRUBHAI AMBANI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

Shri Dhirubhai Ambani’s vision was to empower and provide opportunities to students. The
Dhirubhai Ambani Scholarship (DAS) Programme was started in 1996 the scholarship is
awarded to meritorious students of standard XII (State/ CBSE Board) to pursue college.
Number of students benefitted from this programme is:
464 students including 149 specially abled students. (2015-2016)
 437 students (2016-2017) and 290 students (2017-2018) out of which half are girls and 1/5
are specially abled.

RELIANCE DHIRUBHAI AMBANI PROTSHAM SCHEME

Reliance Dhirubhai Ambani Protsaham, was started in 2008,the scheme is to financially


support economically backward and meritorious students (Class X) from the East Godavari
District. Students from this scheme can get admissions in corporate junior colleges they want
to.

Number of students benefitted from this programme is:

140 were selected in the scheme for the academic year 2015-16.

91 were selected in the scheme for the academic year 2016-17.

EDUCATION FOR SPECIALLY-ABLED CHILDREN

RIL set up a rehabilitation centre in Thallarevu, Andhra Pradesh to facilitate and improve the
development process of children with hearing and speech impairment. Equipped with special
education appliance, the centre provides special training on therapeutic needs of 60 children
(2015-2016) and provides awareness programmes on disabilities and training skills for
specially-abled children.

DIGITALIZING SCHOOLS

To get technology into classrooms Reliance has partnered with the Department of Education
of Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat to implement education programmes by using Jio technology.

85 schools in AP and 10 schools in Gujarat benefitted from this programme.

Reliance has also supported schools in tribal areas by setting up computer aided learning
centres. The schools have been provided with computer systems, necessary infrastructure and
digital classroom content.
3,500 students have used these facilities.

A Digital Learning Van was launched(2016-17), that provides access to digital learning to
thousands of underprivileged children reaching out to more than 4,000 children from 10
government schools in Mumbai and Thane districts.

Reliance with local governments to established digital classrooms in 129 government schools
across Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Telangana benefitting
about 30,000 students.

PARTNERSHIPS TO ENHANCE EDUCATION

RIL in partnership with Eklavya Foundation, implemented a project reaching out to 1,300
children in 41 villages of Madhya Pradesh to improve the learning abilities of children
through Shiksha Protsahan Kendras (SPK).

At Jamnagar, a program was designed to decrease the deficiency and enhance the proficiency
in schools. ‘Functional English’ supplementary classes and subjects such as science and
maths are carried out in 3 schools at present, reaching out to about 1,000 students. An unique
aspect of this project is that 33 lady volunteers (educated homemakers and spouses of RIL
employees) teach in schools under the guidance of an eminent educationist.

Reliance supported The Bombay Community Public Trust’s English E-Teach (EET) project
which aims to improve quality of English of poor children that can improve their employment
opportunitie.the EET init tive has reached about two lakh children in Maharashtra.

RELIANCE FOUNDATION JR. NBA PROGRAMME

RF Jr. NBA programme, an inclusive school based basketball initiative, completed its fifth
consecutive year(since 2013). The programme wanting to promote health and active lifestyle,
integrated basketball into the physical education curriculum in 10,000+ participating schools
nationwide.It teaches the sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and sacrifice The programme
has reached out to 9 million students across 34 cities in India since inception and 5.6 million
students in 2017-18.

YOUNG CHAMPS PROGRAMME

Young Champs is a full scholarship, residential football and education programme started in
2007 that aims to provide for aspiring footballers to improve their skills. Under this
programme, 23 children were awarded scholarships to develop their football skills. More than
34,500 footballs were distributed to over 6,520 village schools/ youth clubs to promote
football in rural areas.
CSR In HEALTHCARE

Reliance India Ltd. does maximum Corporate Social Responsibilities in Health


department since 4 years. They are trying to improve the healthcare facilities of the country in
terms of quality and affordable for the common people of the country. Their aim is to reach
out to the most backward areas of the society. They try to create awareness through the
various campaigns which they do in the country. They are committed so that the India
achieve the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. India needs support in the
maternal and child health care. With these CSR activities RIL have served more than
4,00,000 patients from over 1 lakh families. Around 80% of these people’s family earn less
than 1,00,000 annually. Out of these more than 50% people use to visit non-MBBS people
who were just doing business in the name of consultation and taking extra fees from poor
people. They are serving people and treating patients for free since 1995. They have
partnerships with some best companies from around the globe as to maintain their processes
and run their organizations. They have various campaigns all around the India for creating
awareness to Pregnant ladies, Lactating Mothers, and young girls. They also have awareness
program for Young Children as how to maintain hygiene and steps taken for preventing
spreading of diseases. They teach them about various communicable and non-communicable
diseases. They have spent a total of over 2400 crores for only healthcare activities as a part of
their CSR.
They have done various things under their Health Care CSR:
1. Sir HN Reliance foundation hospital & Research Centre.
This hospital is in South Mumbai which completed its 90 th year in 2014. It was rebuilt and is
run by its chairperson Mrs Neeta Ambani. It is a 19 storey building with two wings. It
celebrated its 25th Anniversary with Sardar Vallabhai Patel as their chief guest. Before
Independence it served many Indian Freedom Fighters including Mahatma Gandhi for their
treatment. They have world class facilities and have collaborations with various companies
situated world wide.
They also have operation theaters with robots operating for some surgeries, and they have
facility of video-conferencing for some operations so that specialists from different parts of
the world can help the doctors. They have cath-lab for emergency heart-operations and
Asia’s 1st new generation city scan for the diagnostics facility. The good part of the hospital
is that they have same type of treatment for the general wards people also. The hospital has
rainwater harvesting and water recycling for the eco-friendly environment and for saving the
water wastage in daily use.

2. Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.


It was inaugurated in 1998 by the founder of the Reliance India Ltd. Late Shri Dhirubhai
Ambani. They have the tagline as ‘Seva Paramo Dharma’ and they are dedicated towards it.
They strive to provide comfort, care and cure to the common people of the country and
beyond it. With the rising road traffic and better roads like Mumbai Pune 6-lane Expressway
the number of road accidents are increasing day by day, and hospitals need more emergency
wards and facility for those people. The hospital is situated in the perfect location so that the
ambulances can take those people at right time to the hospital.
The hopital has 82 beds and facility of ICU, NICU, Maternal, Surgical and medical services.
Some specialists doctors from various hospitals regularly visit for the complex patient’s
needs. They have 3 major operation theatres for the benefit of the patients. As CSR they
help many patients daily and they also provide free medical help to the people from
surrounding villages. They helped a total of 1362 people in a year. They also provided free
consultation to 3,000 HIV patients. They have association with Lions Club to provide free
cataract surgery to 105 patients. They also waived off the fees of full body checkup of 157
patients.

3. Specialized Centre for HIV/AIDS.


They have two specific centres for HIV at Hazira and Patalganga. They serve more than 1
lakh patients in those centres. Those centres offer care in the form of counselling, testing
and medicines for relief from the disease. Since 2006 at Hazira, they provide free nutritional
kits and medical help to the HIV infected kids. More than 100 children were helped by this
scheme and majority of the children were orphans because their parents died because of
HIV. These children get free nutritional kits free every month.

4. Primary and Preventive Healthcare.


They serve the people by having 4 static medical units and 6 mobile medical units at various
locations in Mumbai, Uttrakhand and Madhya Pradesh. They help the underprivileged rural
people and urban people from nearby places. The medical units have state of the art facility
inbuilt in their vehicles. They also have cloud facilities to store the information of the
patients so that they can read the earlier treatments and records of the patients. They have
provided free door step treatment to more than 76,000 patients in one year and 1,49,000 till
now.

5. Menstrual Hygiene Awareness program.


They do promotion of menstrual hygiene in rural parts of the country. They started doing it
in Nagothane (Maharashtra) and Dahej (Gujarat). They try to remove the myths and
misconceptions in the minds of young girls and women. They are increasing the awareness
programs on menstrual hygiene and use of sanitary napkins. They aim to benefit 1400
young girls by this project during this year.
Chandra Kanwar also known as ‘Pad Women’, a leader of women’s group from Sawai
Madhopur (Rajasthan) is now leading the program and she tries to become the change agent
in her local community. Because of her 300 women have started using hygienic and good
quality napkins.

6. Reliance Foundation Drishti (Eye care).


This foundation they have for the visually impaired underprivileged people in and around
Mumbai. They have done more than 14,000 corneal transplants. In a year they do roughly
around 1200-1400 transplants. They also publish International braille newspaper every two
weeks for lakhs of visually impaired people across 17 countries. They also have started
doing awareness program where they teach the importance of donating eyes. They also
conduct paint and essay writing competition every year where about 10,000 children
participate in it. They conduct vision screening camps on regular basis in Jamnagar,
Nagothane, Vadodara and Patalganga. Last year they screened approximately 16,500
individuals, out of which they found 1,185 cataract patients. They did free surgery of 1,050
cataract patients.

7. Alliance for Saving Mothers and Newborns (ASMAN).


ASMAN project have partnership with 4 other companies, which they operate in Rajasthan
and Madhya Pradesh to enhance the quality of heath care facilities of new-born babies and
pregnant ladies. In recent time, the number of deaths in newly born babies and pregnant
ladies are increasing at a very high rate. Reliance India Ltd has taken a initiative to reduce
this number. For this project they have trained 80 Doctors and 338 nurses. They aim to help
0.5 Million mothers and new born babies.
CSR activities spanning over rural and urban cities
Most of the CSR activities of Reliance Industries Limited are carried out the banner of
Reliance Foundation which was established in 2010 under the leadership of Smt. Nita M
Ambani. It has been addressing the challenges of rural communities by making villages water
secure, enabling other livelihood option besides farming, using technology based solutions
for livestock owners and fisher folks across the country. The three core principles which
guide the company’s CSR initiatives are scale, impact and sustainability. It has undertaken
initiatives with compliance with Schedule VII of the Companies Act,2013.It works in
bridging the gap between rural and urban ‘India’, transforming some of the most marginal
communities of India.
Csr activities undertaken by Reliance Industries Limited for the year
2015-2016
Water Security-The programme aims to provide water to villages for irrigation purposes and
domestic use, renovating harvesting structures such as masonry dams, open wells and farm
ponds. It has spent approximately 107 crores in the financial year 2015-16 in rural
transformational activities. The key activities include provision of clean drinking water to
villages, energy conservation and production, trainings on sanitation, environment protection
and cleanliness. 107 villages were made water secure for drinking water while both
agricultural needs for 46 villages were met. Water user groups have been formed for
effective use and management of water. Farmers were also a part of it.

Among other initiatives, hand pumps, portable water storage tanks were constructed and
pipeline distribution systems were installed in different parts of the country. Kakinda and
Jamnagar villages were provided with 58 reverse osmosis plants. These measures helped in
increasing biodiversity, productivity and reinforced sustainable environmental processes.
Reliance supported small farmers through fencing their lands providing protection from wild
animals .Cucumber, long melon etc had been cultivated using residual moisture of riverbed
Csr activities undertaken by Reliance Industries Limited for the year
2016-2017

A total of Rs 674 crores were spent on CSR activities by Reliance Industries Limited for the
year 2016-17 out of which a major chunk was contributed in enhancing water conservation,
maintenance of biodiversity in rural areas and touched 74 urban locations. The amount of
money invested was estimated to be 138 crores in the rural sector. The livelihood of fisher
folks, livestock owners was also enhanced. Around 12 lakh saplings were planted in FY
2016-17.The cable suspension bridge known as “Sudama Setu ” that connects river Gomati
and Panchkui area was constructed by Reliance to facilitate pilgrimage to visit Panchnad,
Panchkui etc areas. It also addressed the problems of malnutrition, poverty, hunger and
proper sanitation. It also encouraged water conservation and rain water harvesting to improve
productivity of the farm lands. Reliance worked in building community institutions to
achieve holistic village development .The institutions are based on values of inclusiveness,
transparency and democracy. Reliance Foundation used ferro-cement technology for the
construction of water storage tanks in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand. Almost 100 ferro-
cement structures were constructed within a year which enabled 131 villages to achieve safe
drinking water and 51 villages were secured for irrigation.1.38 crores saplings have been
planted since its inception.56,139 hectares of land have been brought under improved
cultivation. A total of 3000 thrifts groups of women have been formed to empower women on
financial management and take decisions.
Csr activities undertaken by Reliance Industries Limited for the year
2017-2018
Reliance has spent approximately 195 crores 34 lakhs in the financial year 2017-18 in rural
transformation and urban development activities. Eco consistent soil conservation efforts,
water harvesting has brought more than 7000 hectares of land under sustainable agriculture
practises and 32000 hectares of land under proper irrigation facilities. According to 2017-18
report, a total number of 307 villages were made water secure and many saplings were
planted to promote biodiversity. The programme empowers rural communities to organise
themselves into different groups such as village associations, Women thrift groups etc. Some
of the people from these groups are also elected by people as representatives of Gram
Panchayats. Around 86000 rural households in India are associated with the programmes
undertaken by Reliance Industries Limited. In the rural areas of Maharashtra Reliance
supported Pani Foundation’s Water Cup initiative to ensure water security and safe drinking
water. Reliance empowered farmers to set up Farmer Producers Companies to encourage
producers to work together as a collective and have sustainable access to markets. The annual
turnover of FPC’s during the financial year 2017-18 was Rs 67.5 crores. 9500 rural families
have benefitted from alternatives means of livelihood which were encouraged by the
company such as goat rearing, poultry, vermin-composting etc till date.7 million saplings
were planted in the year 2017-18.It also endorses the protection of soil ecosystem/

SPORTS DEVELOPMENT:

Reliance industry focuses on sports more often by encouraging and investing leadership
amongst the youth people. Under this scheme, a pool of young talented students take part in
various sports and build their skills in sports.
In 2015-16, over 19 lakhs youths took part to adopt healthy and active lifestyle by playing
sports like basketball and also adding this to their main education curriculum. Also 23
students got scholarships under Young Champs programme for improving their football
skills. In rural areas, they reach out to over 3000 children by initiating in different sports
development programmes.
Then in 2016-17, over 34 lakhs students were inception across 18 cities with about 25 lakhs
youths engaged in the NBA programme conducted by Reliance industry. In the year 2016-17,
18 students were awarded scholarships under the same event which held in last year so as to
develop their football skills. Rural sports initiative goal’s is to empowering communities and
societies to improve education, gender, and their leadership qualities. This initiative has
reached out to around 1500 rural youth.

In 2017-18, reliance industry uses sports as a main stream to promote health, fitness and
active lifestyle to bring a big change among students and youths in both rural and urban
areas. They started a programme called Education and Sports for All (ESA) in which various
sports like basketball, football and athletics are used to improve strategic thinking and ask
them to compete in different tournaments so that they can build their leadership abilities.
Competition were held on various state and national levels as to gain the quality of sporting
ecosystem by training, infrastructure and providing better facilities.
Under ESA, the company provides education to underprivileged children by mixing up with
NGOs. Many government schools in Mumbai and thane gives education to more than 4000
children through Digital Learning Van in 2017. This impacted over 2 lakhs children in many
positive ways.
Then foundation of NBA programme has been successfully reached out to over 9 million
participants across 34 cities in India. Their programme is running successfully for 5 th
consecutive year handling over 10000 participants in one time.
The new initiative called Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) provides a unique
platform for advance sports in various areas and introduced athletics to encourage sporting
talent in the whole country. These all includes Northeast India and Kerala, Bangalore,
Hyderabad, etc. The programme was sponsored in 3400 institutes and around 4900 teams
participated in that tournament. Also an inaugural National Athletic Championship includes
2900 institutes over 9000 athletes in around 3000 events.

On behalf of Reliance Industry, Nita Ambani received Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar
from President of India Shri Ram Kovind in 2017 for her powerful role and performance in
transforming country into a sporting nation. Also one more achievement witnessed by the
company, RF Jr. NBA enters Guinness Book of World Records as around 3400 students took
basketball lessons at one time in different states in India.
Reliance industry will support education and sports development in strengthening the skills of
teachers and coaches. In 2018-19, the company continues to become largest private sector
enterprise by reaching 40 million people and in 2030, they wants to spend the 2% of their net
profit as per the minimum requirements. The company’s main social initiatives in 2018-19
was on three characteristics, i.e. direct engagement with the community, forging partnerships
and collaborations and leveraging technology.

DISASTER RESPONSE:

Reliance industry Ltd. gives timely and proper relief and rehabilitation to people affected by
natural calamities like earthquakes, floods and cyclones. They made so much efforts to cope
up with disasters and provide local communities resources to make their daily life easier.
Reliance covered most of the states which affected from natural disasters like Gujarat,
Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu and the relief activities were provided in seven districts and 218
villages in these states. It gives lives to around 146,510 individuals who were affected in
floods and drought. They reached out to 2.8 lakh people through the inception. They
supported more than 100 drought villages in rural areas of Maharashtra by giving over 60
million litres of drinking water. Around 14000 people were relieved by the facilities provided
by the company and also they avail disease management of crops.
Reliance Industry directly engaged with different communities to help in saving human lives
and their livelihoods by connecting to them whenever the community people required. The
company provides information through their technology and human resources by reaching to
affected people in various areas like Assam, Gujarat and Southern India. During the year
2017, company helps people who were affected by floods and cyclones. This all motivates
the employees of the company to help more whenever required.

In august 2017, several people were endangered due to floods in Assam and nearby areas.
They don’t have the basic needs to survive in the long run. So the Reliance Company gives
relief support and ration kits to more than 10,000 people in around 22 villages to sustain their
lives for approximately 15 days. Same as in case of Gujarat floods, they immediately gives
health precautions, water, livelihoods to sustain their lives for long period. Around 15 lakhs
people across 87 villages were affected during floods in Gujarat and were asked for help to
the government. Reliance industry along with government helps in starting the campaigns to
support afflicted communities and gives benefits to them so that they can reduce the health
risks spreading through floods.
Using the technology, reliance industry played a very important role in saving the people who
were stuck in the cyclone Ockhi that hit in the southern parts of India like Tamil Nadu and
Kerala. Due to receiving correct and accurate data on time, over 27,000 fisherman were
saved. Also various communication modes such as Flag Method, Knowledge on Wheels,
helpline services and multi-location audio conferences were used to connect with farmers.
Reliance toll free helpline number was used to locate missing boats and fisherman. The
company acts as an intermediary between government functionaries and people using their
leveraging technology. Almost 300 fisherman and 35 boats were saved from the deep sea
with the help of Indian Navy and Coastguards and they were sent back to their families in no
time. A study shows that approximately 91% of cyclone affecters were rescued by the
company volunteers.

ARTS, CULTURE AND HERITAGE:

This Program was initiated to promote and support artists and craftsmen which would in turn
help them to protect and preserve Indian Arts, Culture and Heritage, Traditional Arts and
Handicrafts and for that they have done many developmental projects for the same.
Reliance industry initiated the annual concert Abbaji in 2016 which was organised by Ustad
Zakir Hussain in the memory of his father. Also the company brought Art for Autism festival
in Mumbai which centred on the Combining technology with art where the children were
trained and participated in painting and photography skills, acting and modelling art forms.

In 2017-18, reliance industry dedicated their work and support through an event called 8
Prahar where it brought together classical music with delight Mumbai music fans. Also in last
months of the year, the company works on city modernisation through their new urban
programmes so as to fasten the life and quality of people in the cities and thus build good
infrastructure to ease the lives of people. They build three parks in the urban areas with high
maintenance services and also installed bridges like Magdalla and Hazira bridges.
With the help of Gujarat government, reliance industry constructed a cable suspension bridge
called Sudama Setu that connects Panchuki and river Gomati. Also the company helps youths
to take up their own choices jobs in retail sector in different companies. By this, over 1600
individuals have been trained and employed in retail stores including the slum area people
also.
One more programme conducted by the reliance industry for the financial empowerment of
urban underprivileged women to ensure that they should be literate in terms of managing
their income and saving properly. Around 7500 women has been trained in this programme in
both rural and urban areas.
Other initiatives that contribute to Corporate Social Responsibility by reliance industry are
contribution to Swatch Bharat Abhiyan started by Modi Government. Across rural and urban
areas, the company has started awareness regarding the importance of cleanliness, hygiene
and sanitation. Their volunteers took active participation in cleaning the villages and cities so
that to motivate the people to do the same in their areas.
More often the company has launched a huge campaign called Swachhata Hi Seva across the
whole country which long lasted for few weeks. In September-October month of 2017, they
covered all the communities to take part in this mission by Shramdaan where around one lakh
people participated.
Empowering women through collectivisation and financial literacy helps undertook efficient
efforts for increasing financial literacy and inclusion among women by linking it to formal
financial institution. Reliance industry and their employee’s experience helps marginalised
communities to learn personal finance and the importance of savings. Women Thrift Groups
provides rural women a platform to participate and manage the socio economic change by
financially self-reliant. Over 3,000 women have united 110 groups across 7 states which
collected over Rs. 4.5 million. This includes many issues like health, hygiene and sanitation
which affected rural women and their families in large number. The company initiatives took
to take intervention in achieving gender equality in many villages. Women have been taken
part in many literacy trainings that help in them financially.
