Agroforestry: A practice of raising both tree and agricultural crops simultaneously in a given space and
time.Theaim of developing agroforestry in Nepal is to meet the present and future requirements
fuelwood, fodder, small timber and to protect against environmental degradation.

There are two types of agroforestry system adopted in Nepal.

A) Farm based agroforestry system

- Home garden: It is a multistoried agroforestry system. It is a system to fulfill owner's immediate
needs.
- Woodlot: In Nepal, natural woodlots are mechanism for preserving natural forests in upper
ridge, ridge tops and along the stream banks of sub-watershed in the hills.
- Intercropping with horticultural crops: More prevalent in the terai.Spacing: 5-6 meters.
- Silvofishery system: Also prevalent in the terai.Tree spps+ fish farming
B) Forest based agroforestry system
- Taungya system: It is started from Myanmar(Burma). In Nepal, Taungya was started in
1972from Tamagadiof Bara district. 2m*4m spacing is adopted in Taungya system.
 Shifting cultivation : It is practiced in the midhill and high mountain physiograhic zones of the
country, often on very steep slopes which also known as hill cultivation.Rptation cycles have
been less than five years in many places. This has prevented regeneration of many valueable
plant species and resulted in site deterioration.
