SBA 2015
Sarteneja Baptist High School

You are hired as an IT Consultant by the Belize Tourism Board (BTB). You have been assigned the task
of entering and analyzing data concerning tourist arrivals in Belize for the year 2006. You are expected
to study the trends concerning these arrivals, analyze monthly and yearly expenditure for budgeting,
prepare reports regarding tourist-related activities, and make recommendations to the Minister of
Tourism regarding measures, programs, and projects that can be implemented to further improve the
tourism industry in Belize.

The major tasks you will be required to perform are as follows:

Design and maintain a database on tourist arrivals and visits to Belize during the year 2006.

Use spreadsheets for budgeting analysis; to analyze trends in tourist activities and visits; and to study
the most frequently visited sites or areas during the period.

Prepare a report to the Minister of Tourism illustrating your findings and make recommendations
regarding measures, programs, and projects that can be implemented to further improve the tourism
industry in Belize.

Promote Belize as a tourist destination to potential visitors and describe the sites and locations in Belize
that would most likely appeal to international tourists.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT

TABLES:

Page 1
As a part of your job description, it is required that you develop a database, which will contain detailed
information about tourist arrivals and personal information concerning those tourists who visited the
country of Belize during the year. You are expected to design the following:

Tourist Table:
You are to design a table including information concerning tourists who visited Belize during the year
2006; for simplicity’s sake, a total of 25 tourists (no more than 25) will be assumed to have visited the
country during this period. The following information will be necessary in this table: Tourist ID (this will
consist of the tourists’ initials and any two digits e.g. Joe Public may be JP96), first and last name of the
each tourist (separately), age, nationality (to reflect reality as much as possible, have at least five of the
tourists in the table being Americans), gender, occupation, travel agent ID (this is the person who
organized or provided tour services to the visitors- each travel agent should have at least two tourists to
attend to; in other words, a travel agent should be listed at least twice in the table), and whether or not
they are first time visitors (Yes/No field). Include a wide range of ages, nationalities and occupations.

Travel Information Table:

This table will contain detailed information about the visits for each tourist recorded in the tourist table.
This will include the Tourist ID, means of arrival (limit these entries to Airline, Cruise Ship, Tour Bus or
Private Vehicle), port of entry (limit these entries to International Airport for airline passengers, Belize
Tourist Village for cruise ship arrivals, Santa Elena Border or Melchor Border for Tour Bus or Private
Motor Car arrivals), transportation cost (cost to reach Belize from place of origin), length of stay (limit
these entries to overnight or one-day – applies mainly to cruise ship passengers), hotel charges (note that
this only will apply to overnight visitors), money spent in the country excluding hotel costs if any
(statistics reveal that overnight visitors tend to spend more than one-day visitors), site visited (limit these
entries to the cayes, barrier reef, national park, pine ridge, Maya sites, rainforest and natural wonders –
this includes 1000 ft falls, Blue Hole etc.). Only one site should be listed per tourist. Have at least one
tourist visiting each of the available sites listed.

Travel Agents Table:

This table will include detailed information for 10 travel agents and the companies that arranged the
tourists’ visits or provided tour-guiding services for the visitors. Included in this table will be the Agent
ID, the first and last names of the each agent (separately), the name of the travel agency where the agent
is employed (an agency typically employs more than 1 travel agent), the first line address and second line
address of the travel agency, the fee charged for the services rendered, and the number of tourists attended
to by travel agency.

FORMS:
Create an appropriate form to facilitate data entry in the Tourist Table. Data may be entered directly in
the other tables or additional forms created. Print the structure/layout of the form used for data entry in
the tourist table and for any other form used.

QUERIES:
1) Create a query showing all the tourists who are American and entered Belize by way of Cruise
Ships. Include their names, ages and sites visited in this query. Name the query appropriately. Print
the SQL of the query along with the results.

2) Identify all the one-day tourists who spent $200 or more during their visit to Belize. This query
should include their names, nationalities, and occupations. Name the query appropriately. Print the
SQL of the query along with the results.

Page 2
3) Identify the tourists either one day or overnight that spent $150 or less in the country. This query
should include their names, nationalities, and occupations. Name the query appropriately. Print the
SQL of the query along with the results.

4) The Government of Belize (GOB) is implementing a project that will be geared towards further
improving and developing the country’s infrastructure and maintaining frequently visited tourist sites.
However, to make this endeavor a reality, GOB will be imposing a new fee that will be charged to
tourists. The new tax will be 0.5% of the travel agents’ fees charged to tourists. Add a new field
named DevTax (for development tax) in the Travel Agency Table and run an update query to show
the amount that will be charged based on the travel agents’ fees charged to tourists. Print the SQL of
the query along with the results.

REPORTS:
1) You are asked to create a report showing all tourists who visited Belize during the year. Include
first and last names, nationalities, sites visited, ages and gender. Sort tourists’ last names in
descending order. Name this report: “Tourist Report 2011.”

2) Generate a report, grouping all tourists by nationality. Include names, means of arrival, money
spent and length of stay. Sort “Money Spent” in descending order. Include a count function to
show the number of tourists from each nationality and total the amount of money spent by all
tourists. Name this report: “Tourists Grouped by Nationality.”

SPREADSHEETS

a) Generate a query with all tourists’ information to be imported into the spreadsheet for analysis
and budgeting; the query should include: Tourists’ ID’s, names, means of arrival, port of entry,
money spent in the country, sites visited, travel agents’ fees, and length of stay.

b) The Government of Belize has decided to implement Departure Tax

revenue-earning taxes within the tourism industry. One such Port of Entry Fee
measure is the imposition of a special departure tax for all Melchor $20
visitors to Belize. The departure tax varies depending on the Santa Elena $30
ports of entry and departure used by the tourists. The Airport $44
following table shows the breakdown of the taxes based on Tourist Village $10
the port of entry:

Place the table on a separate sheet, and using a lookup function fill in the corresponding fee for each
of the tourists.

c) Insert a column to the right of the column labeled “Length of Stay” and label this new column:
“Number of Days.” Enter the number of days (assign your own number) that each tourist spends in
Belize. Make sure that the data in this column corresponds with the information regarding the length
of stay. Note that “Overnight” refers to any number of days more than one day.

d) The analysis of recent statistics shows that on average, tourists who visit Belize spend $25.50 BZ
on transportation each day. Place this value in a cell by itself and use absolute cell referencing to
calculate the estimated total money spent on transportation by tourists in Belize during the period.

e) In a section of the spreadsheet beneath the tourists’ data create a small table to list the sites
visited and the number of visits to each identified site. Use the COUNTIF function to calculate the
number of visits per site – do not conduct a manual count.

Page 3
f) Generate a pie chart showing the distribution of the number of visits per site. Include a title and
percentage values on the chart.

g) An error was made in the data entry process and two tourists were accidentally omitted from the
list. Insert information regarding two tourists after the fifth tourist on your list. Include all their
pertinent data. One tourist is a Canadian and the other is British.

h) Generate a bar chart illustrating the distribution of money spent in the country per tourist visiting
Belize during the period. Include a title and axes labels on the chart.

i) The Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) has implemented a new policy that will require
all tourists who visit national parks, rainforests, and the barrier reef to pay an environment protection
fee. The money generated from this initiative will be used for maintaining these sites. Using
advanced filters (complex criterion); extract the records of these tourists to another section of
spreadsheet.

j) In an effort to further improve the tourism industry, the government has decided to create a
budget for the upcoming year that will enable it to focus on the main areas that should be addressed
and developed within the industry. The funding for these development programs will come from
several sources: total proceeds from departure taxes charged will provide 0.5% of funding (use total
from spreadsheet); hotel and resort taxes will provide 7%; tourist attraction sites 5%; and the
government will subsidize the remaining 87.5%.

k) The main sectors of the tourism industry to which the funding will be allocated are as follows:
infrastructure development 15%; safety and security programs 45%; environmental protection 25%;
and training programs for personnel employed in the tourism industry 15%.

l) On a separate worksheet, design a table to perform budgeting for the upcoming fiscal year. The
table should include sources of funding for the tourism development programs and the projects to
which these funds will be allocated (including percentages and amount distributions). Total
percentage must not be over 100%.

m) Total all columns with currency or numeric values and use proper currency or numeric formats
for these.

WORDPROCESSING
Task 1

A) The Ministry of Tourism in Belize is embarking on a mission to implement programs, policies,

and projects that are geared towards the development of the country’s tourism industry. Since
tourism is a major revenue earner for the country and due to the fact that one out of every four jobs in
Belize is in some way related to or is impacted by tourism, the Government of Belize is intent in
facilitating the sustained growth of the industry. You are assigned the task of preparing a report that
will be addressed to the Minister of Tourism in Belize. The main aim of the report will be to provide
detailed analysis regarding tourism related activities in the country during the year 2006. You will
also be required to present measures that may be implemented to ensure the sustained development of
the industry.

B) The report should include the following information:

Page 4
(i) Open the report by mentioning that you have been assigned the task of preparing a
Tourism Report for the year 2006. You should also include in an opening paragraph your
opinion concerning why the tourism industry is important for the development of the nation as a
whole.

(ii) The first section of the report should include the proposed budget as it relates to the
tourism industry. This will be based on the budget analysis from the spreadsheet. You will be
expected to explain the main details of the budget in a short paragraph.

(iii) You are to import the pie chart illustrating the distribution of the number of visits to
tourist sites during the year. You will briefly analyze the findings as demonstrated by the chart.
You should also make a short recommendation concerning how the government or the private
sector may establish measures or programs to increase visitation to those sites that had the
lowest number of visitors.
(iv) Import the report illustrating the distribution of tourists, among the various
nationalities, visiting Belize during that period. Beneath this report, include your
recommendations regarding how tourists from those nations that had the smaller number of
visitors to Belize may be enticed to visit the country in an effort to increase the amount of
money coming into the country.

Task 2

A) Your expertise is being sought by a local travel agency to prepare a brochure that will
promote Belize as a tourist destination. The main target-market for this promotion activity is the
overnight tourists who visited the country during the 2006 tourist season.

B) The information to be included in the brochure are as follows:

(i) A brief description of the nation of Belize (demographics) and a

description of the tourism industry in Belize;

(ii) An advertisement for your own fictional resort, hotel, guesthouse,

restaurant, or gift shop in Belize (that is being promoted by the travel agency) and a brief
description of the services/products or amenities available at that establishment.

(iii) A list of at least THREE popular tourist destinations within close proximity
of your fictional resort, hotel, guesthouse, restaurant, or gift shop.

C) Include appropriate pictures or graphics to enhance the appearance of the brochure.

Include in the first panel of the brochure the name of the tourism organization along with any slogan -
contact information and address to be included in the back panel. An appropriate graphic image
along with tourism information (from the merge) will also be included in this first panel.

D) You are to merge the brochure with a query identifying all overnight tourists. Print the
original document (main document), the first and the last merged document, and the data source with
the names of the tourists to whom these brochures will be sent.

Problem Solving
1. Develop an Algorithm or write pseudocode to keep track of the amount of money spent,
and also the revenue collected as taxes, from a number of tourists (use of flowcharts are
also accepted). The algorithm should also accept the surname of a tourist and the money
spent during his/her stay in the country; data entry stops when an amount of 0 is entered
for money spent. Tax is calculated at 10% GST plus 2% environmental tax per tourist; a
departure tax of $37.50 also applies to every tourist. The algorithm should be able to
output the total amount of money spent by all tourists and also the total revenue collected
as taxes; it should be able to output the money spent and taxes for any specified tourist-
based on the tourist’s surname.

2. Using data from the tourist table (Database management section) extract the names,
nationality and money spent for North American Tourists (Mexico, USA, Canada).
Design and execute a trace table that accepts the surname and money spent per tourist.
The trace table should show the running totals for money spent and taxes; and keep track
of the number of tourists entered until the terminator value is given.

Program Implementation

3. Using the programming language Pascal, write program code to implement the algorithm
in (1) above.
