FARO'S RAO is imaginary street band music. This one comes close to
being straight fingerpicking. The three fingers of the right hand pick
out the syncopated melody line with the thumb playing a lightly
damped alternating bass like the left hand vamp in a ragtime piano
tune. It should be played fairly up-tempo with a slight accent on the
off beat in the bass.

JOHN'S TUNE uses as a theme the first section of John James'

composition HEAD IN THE CLOUDS. The piece has a format like a
classic rag with sections modulating through the dominant to the
mediant and back through the dominant to the repeat of the first
section. It should be played evenly at a medium tempo. The tuning is
DODOBE which opens up new possibilities for playing in the key of
G.

OLD MAC BLADGITT should sound like a sparse series of arpeggios

idly played on an old upright piano. The piece begins in G minor with
the melody built around the upper intervals of the chord, the 7th, 9th
and 1lth. The tuning however is open G major DGDGBD and the
tune modulates to A minor through E minor with a close on A major,
to c' minor with a close on a• major that changes enharmonically to
Ab major leading back through C minor to finish with the first section
again in G minor.

All the chord inversions fit quite naturally on the guitar in the open
tuning and the piece should be played in a leisurely manner.
