Rationale
One of the greatest problems of a country all over the world is how to manage
properly the solid wastes that people generate. Solid waste remains a serious problem
that causes contamination of soil and water bodies and endangers human health and
the environment.
Metro Manila produces about 8,400 to 8,600 tons of trash per day. Over
increasing population, urbanization, and economic growth contribute to the increase of
solid waste generation.
This project was chosen for the reason that in doing so; hopefully, it will help the
students learn in the field of community development and making community
educational programs for the future use.
Recycling and Urban Gardening will be developed in order to lead people,
especially those living in urban areas, in „responsible environment‟ and in learning the
nature of conservation. This will also help the community cope with the current condition
of our environment. With such interest, the students must successfully accomplish the
things required to complete the proposed project.
Project Description
Recycling is the process of taking a product at the end of its useful life and using
all or part of it to make another product. In the process of recycling urban organic waste,
microbial degradation releases the useful nutrients in organic waste for soil
improvement and plant growth. The potential benefits of organic waste recycling are
particularly in reducing the environmental impact of disposal sites, in extending existing
landfill capacity, in replenishing the soil humus layer and in minimizing waste quantity.
Much of the solid waste consists of organic matter that can be recycled into a
profitable input (compost) for urban agriculture. Urban gardening or urban agriculture is
the practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing food in or around a village, town,
or city. Urban gardening contributes to food security and food safety in two ways: first, it
increases the amount of food available to people living in cities, and second, it allows
fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat products to be made available to urban consumers. It
is generally practiced for income earning or food-producing activities, though in some
communities the main impetus is recreation and relaxation.
This project is all about recycling solid and urban organic wastes and using the
organic wastes in urban gardening.
Objectives
The objectives of this project are the following:
a. To educate the community about the importance of recycling and urban gardening
b. To help the community secure their own food
c. To help the community earn a living
Beneficiaries
The project will be implemented in the urban dwellers of Barangay 186 in
Malaria, Caloocan City. The population of the barangay is around 18,168.
