Key Skills
Technology Education allows for the development of some 21st Century Skills. These
include:
- Teamwork skills
- Research skills
- Safety
- Presentation skills
Teamwork
A group of persons working together will have more information, skills and resources than a
single person. This allows for the generation of more ideas and the possibility of developing
- Respect
- Responsibility
- Empathy
- Tolerance
- Cooperation
Research Skills
Generally, no one possesses all the information needed to solve a problem. Conducting
relevant research will assist members of the team in gathering information needed to develop
an appropriate solution to the problem. The team needs to ask certain questions to guide the
Internet Research
• Conducting internet research is the easiest way of gathering data, once
there are available computers and internet access
• use familiar engines such as Google
• use simple words and key phrases
• record the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for your project writeup
Interviews
• this is usually used to collect information of a localized nature.
• choose interviewees wisely
• prepare questions in advance
• have open-ended questions
• stay on target
• record interviewee's information for your project writeup
Sketching and Drawing
You do not need to be an artist to communicate your ideas. Take your time, sketch lightly
with pencils, use short strokes, practise drawing straight lines etc. Make sure to label and
dimension drawings.
Safety
Safety involves conducting yourself in a manner that will reduce or eliminate the risk of
accidents to yourself and others. When accidents occur, they may result in damage to
property, injury and even death. It is therefore important to adopt a “safety conscious
attitude” at all times. A safety conscious attitude means that you will think safe, act safe and
be safe. In this way you will prevent and / or reduce the risk of accidents in your classrooms
- Select appropriate tools and equipment for the project and use wisely
Once the solution to the problem has been produced and tested, the team should prepare a
presentation. The presentation should include the procedure used in developing and testing
- Can make PowerPoint (General rule: 10 slides, 20 minutes, font size 30)
- Maintain eye contact and do not turn your back on the audience
