Chapter 3

Key Skills
Technology Education allows for the development of some 21st Century Skills. These

include:

- Teamwork skills

- Research skills

- Sketching and Drawing

- Safety

- Presentation skills

Teamwork

Teamwork involves a number of persons working together to achieve a particular objective.

A group of persons working together will have more information, skills and resources than a

single person. This allows for the generation of more ideas and the possibility of developing

an appropriate solution to the given problem. Teamwork is an important part of Technology

Education because it facilitates the development of important skills such as:

- Respect

- Responsibility

- Empathy

- Tolerance

- Cooperation
Research Skills

Generally, no one possesses all the information needed to solve a problem. Conducting

relevant research will assist members of the team in gathering information needed to develop

an appropriate solution to the problem. The team needs to ask certain questions to guide the

information gathering process. These questions include:

- What do I need to solve the problem identified?

- Who can assist with finding information?

- How best can we collect and organize the information?

- Where can we find the information?

In Technology Education, we focus on three sources of information.

Internet Research
• Conducting internet research is the easiest way of gathering data, once
there are available computers and internet access
• use familiar engines such as Google
• use simple words and key phrases
• record the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for your project writeup

Printed Text Material

• printed text includes books, journals, magazines, newspapers etc. e-books
are the 'new' thing now as well
• visit your library at school or NALIS libraries across the country
• record the author's name, the name of the book, the publication date etc
for your project writeup

Interviews
• this is usually used to collect information of a localized nature.
• choose interviewees wisely
• prepare questions in advance
• have open-ended questions
• stay on target
• record interviewee's information for your project writeup
Sketching and Drawing

You do not need to be an artist to communicate your ideas. Take your time, sketch lightly

with pencils, use short strokes, practise drawing straight lines etc. Make sure to label and

dimension drawings.
Safety

Safety involves conducting yourself in a manner that will reduce or eliminate the risk of

accidents to yourself and others. When accidents occur, they may result in damage to

property, injury and even death. It is therefore important to adopt a “safety conscious

attitude” at all times. A safety conscious attitude means that you will think safe, act safe and

be safe. In this way you will prevent and / or reduce the risk of accidents in your classrooms

and work area. You should:

- Follow your teacher’s instructions

- Do not play in classroom or work area

- Dress properly using personal protective equipment (PPE)

- Organize workspace to reduce clutter and overcrowding

- Select appropriate tools and equipment for the project and use wisely

- Inspect the tools and equipment before use

- Ask for assistance if in doubt

- Clean tools and equipment after use and return

- Report any accidents immediately to your teacher

Presentation Skills

Once the solution to the problem has been produced and tested, the team should prepare a

presentation. The presentation should include the procedure used in developing and testing

the solution. Some guidelines for creating presentations are:

- All members must participate in presenting the solution

- Make it simple and manage time

- Can use additional props (brochures, posters etc)

- Can make PowerPoint (General rule: 10 slides, 20 minutes, font size 30)

- Make it interesting (skit, lots of pictures, colours etc)

- Speak fluent and loud

- Maintain eye contact and do not turn your back on the audience

- Practice presentation beforehand, so mistakes are limited

- Do not be stagnant, move around
