APES 2020 Exam Reference Sheet

This document provides guidance for the AP Environmental Science free response questions (FRQs). It outlines the main points to focus on for each section of the FRQs. For the experimental design section, it emphasizes identifying the independent and dependent variables and writing a clear hypothesis. For the environmental analysis section, it stresses describing trends in data by referencing specific data points, explaining problems shown in diagrams or passages, and proposing realistic solutions. The document also lists content resources for quickly finding information during the exam, such as one-page unit cheat sheets and flagged pages in the textbook.

FRQ #1 - Experimental Design: 25 Mins to Write | 5 to Submit Answers

Experimental Design ~ 4 pts.

Use the infographic to answer the experimental

design portion of FRQ #1. Since this is the easier
portion, you should start with it and be sure
you earn all of the points here.

You may be given a question or topic to write a

hypothesis for. Ex: Write a hypothesis to test the
effect that human activity has on ecosystem
productivity.
● You want to pick out the IV & DV from the
prompt before you write a hypothesis or
do anything else
○ IV = human activity
○ DV ecosystem productivity

Explain Env. Concepts ~ 2-3 pts.

After the experimental design portion, you’ll

probably be asked to explain some APES
concept behind the experiment
● Because there are no easy describe or
identify points this year, you NEED TO
GO INTO DEPTH in your answer.
● Minimum 3 sentence answers for these
explain prompts.
○ Focus on step-by-step answers,
usually with 3 key facts or details
○ Focus on cause & effect. Explain
WHY or HOW an event or process
causes an outcome

Propose/Justify Solution ~ 2-3 pts.

You may also be asked to justify a solution to an
env. Issue related to your experiment
● Be sure go into depth for any advantage
or disadvantage you offer to a practice or
solution for an issue
○ State specifically why or how a
disadvantage has harmful effects
○ State specifically why or how an
advantage avoids harmful effects

FRQ #2 - Analyze Env. Problem: 15 Mins to Write | 5 to Submit Answers

Analyze an Env. Problem ~ 2-4 pts.
You will be presented with a short passage, a
diagram, or even data which will illustrate an
environmental problem
Data: You may be asked to describe a trend in
data that illustrates an env. Problem.
● ALWAYS reference specific data points -
ex. The fish population declined from
12,000 individuals to 2,000 individuals
from 1995 to 2005.
● NEVER speak generally about
“numbers” going up or down
Diagram: Refer to processes, effects, steps
shown exactly as they are in the diagram.
● Pay attention to the direction of arrows,
labels for processes or parts of the
diagram
Passage/text: Read very careful, 2x before
answering.
● Be sure that you are explaining a
problem directly from the prompt, and
within the correct frame (env, ecological,
or economic).
You answer must always:
❏ Be step-by-step
❏ Have 3 key parts
❏ Be at least 2-3 sentences

Propose/Justify a Solution ~ 2 pts.

You will also be asked to propose and justify a
solution to the environmental problem
● Specific:Your solution needs to
specifically address the problem
○ You need to justify HOW it solves
or reduces the problem
● Realistic: It needs to be realistic &
possible. Remember that for gov. based
solutions you should never include bans
or raising/lowering prices for
goods/services
○ Gov. can: make laws, increase
taxes on unwanted actions, offer
tax breaks or rebates for wanted
actions, and provide funding for
public education campaigns

APES Textbook & Stickies

If you want to use your textbook/stickies, I would prep it ahead of time with large, labeled stickies
marking sections of the book for each unit. Maybe even binder clips for specific page ranges:
The links take you to the the notes I use for EDPuzzle videos, but I would NOT use during the
exam due to how long these google docs take to load & navigate.
