CHAPTER I

OLD FASHION

I.1 1960s WOMEN’S FASHION

The swinging sixties were a time where traditions were broken, and self-expression was
encouraged. Influenced by the youth of the day, the decade dished up
plenty of style inspiration. Moving away from the prim and proper
’50s and into rebellious new times, ’60s fashion was revolutionary.
Key fashion styles of the decade included mod, beatnik and hippie
looks, all of which captured the artful, fun and free spirit of the time.
Women’s 1960s fashion was extreme style and attitude from the start
of the decade to the end. In the early years, the fashion idol was
Jackie Kennedy with her perfectly white pearls and tailored suit
dresses. By the middle of the decade, supermodel Twiggy had
women freeing their minds and bodies into clothing that didn’t
require any extra thought or effort. From modest to “there is no such
1.1 1960's fashion thing as too short.”
Jackie Kennedy’s style was clean, simple, well fitted, with perfectly matched accessories. She wore
dresses without collars and jackets that buttoned only with one large top button. Shewore sensible
low heel shoes (although many women still preferred high heels). She was the last woman to wear
hats, a pillbox hat, as a necessary fashion. Jackie put a lot of care into her look and women in the
USA and abroad copied her style with enthusiasm.
The full skirt and tight bodice of the ‘50s dress continued in the early ’60s, with a slightly above or
at the knee hemline. Colors and patterns were bigger, brighter and streamlined with plain modest
necklines and short cap sleeves. This full-skirted look didn’t leave fashion in the 1960s, instead of
carrying through to the 1970s in a paired down, less fluffy form.
This dress style didn't last long before the ‘50s pencil dress loosened up and turned into the
shapeless “shift dress” in 1963. The pencil dress feels different from looser skirts, and impacts the
wearer's movements and posture. Walking needs to be done in short strides, and entering and leaving

a car gracefully takes practice. These dresses have been approached by fashion designers every
decade because of their elegance and flexibity in matching with other garments.
Shift dresses were casual wear for home, running errands or going to the beach. They were not
office-friendly. They were too short. 1960s dresses became shorter and shorter. Anything above the
knee was a ‘mini skirt’. Let's take a look at other outfits that drove the world crazy.
THE HIPPIE LOOK

The late ’60s saw a movement of anti-fashion, a political statement, that

grew so popular it became a main stream fashion style. The look started
with faded denim jeans, basic and boring, anti-fashion. The flower child
decoration of patches, embroidery, painting and studding came a few years
later as hippie fashion became wearable statements. The ‘60s hippie was
simpler, more earthy. To go with jeans, a hippie would wear a strapless
undershirt. White at first, then later dyed in earth tone colors so that it
didn’t look like underwear. Tie-dye followed after that. The more colors the
1.2 The hippie look
better. The gaudier the colors, the better!
Anti-fashion meant anti-anyone who has an opinion about what “works” and “doesn’t work” in
fashion. Forest green with brown suede, sunshine yellow with denim blue were signature colors of
the hippie ’60s.
Colors were not the only thing to be exaggerated. Clothes were of extreme proportions. Hats were
big and floppy, vests hung down to the knee and coats to the floor.
A return to folk arts meant beading was on clothes, not just jewelry. Ethnic details covered
anything and everything. There were no rules to hippie fashion. Mix and match and develop your
own beat was the 1960s hippie fashion mantra.
GO-GO BOOTS

Go-go boots are an iconic ’60s footwear style. Introduced in the

middle of the decade, these shoes were traditionally white, low-heeled
and finished mid-calf. However, over time, the term has grown to
include a variety of similar styles, including knee-high versions, other
colours and kitten-heeled designs. Choose your favourite to rock with a
mini skirt for a chic throwback outfit.Novelty Dresses. Designers and

advertisers were climbing all over each other trying to stand out in the crowd. Metal, vinyl and
paper were used to get attention and to be different .

PANT SUITS

As shocking as a mini skirt was to society, there was an equal confusion over the new
pantsuit. It was a look directly copied from men’s suits but tailored down to feminine
proportions. Some work offices and establishments forbade women to wear pantsuits.
There was confusion over whether they were an insult to femininity or empowerment
for women (and that it disrespected men). While 1960s fashion magazines debated,
women flocked to the stores to buy them. They were already wearing casual pants
everywhere else, wearing dressy pants seemed only natural.
Thanks to new materials, PVC (Vinyl), shoes could be mass produced for cheap
and come in a lot of bright colors to match dresses (which 1.4 Pant suit
they did. Always match shoes to a dress or other accessories). The low heel
made them easy to walk in and live life in. All the designs of the earlier
decades– loafers, Mary Janes, T-straps, monk straps, saddle shoes, and Oxfords
were designed into a flat shoe for the ’60s. Even boots had flat heels. Thanks to
PVC and an interest in all things futuristic looking, tall boots in white or silver
became the new black. Everyone wore them. They looked great with short
dresses and skirts. The more modest folks wore boots and half boots in brown.
1.5 Pant suit Again leather was out and shiny plastic looks were in. Sandals, like flip-flops,
made their beachside debut in the 1960s. Women wore them with everything casual. Birkenstock
sandals became icons of the hippies. Most 60s sandals were made of shiny plastics, bright colors,
thin straps with squat flat heels.
Plain white sneakers replaced saddle shoes for school-age kids. They had to be plain white and
perfectly clean. They were worn with socks or with stockings a shade or two darker than natural
skin, which made them appear even whiter.

JEWELRY
4
NEAGU MARIA MAGDALENA FASHION
Colorful 1960s clothing needed equally colorful jewelry. In the early years, traditional jewelry
continued to favor textured gold, white pastel, and colored pearls. These pretty and safe designs
complimented the feminine 1950s style clothing.

The new youth with their obsession with fake plastics, vinyl, and
bold colors favored jewelry inspired by Pop Art. Geometric shapes
made their way onto over-sized dangling earrings. Large chunky
bangles or stacks of thin bracelets jingled up and down bare arms.
Novelty

1960'swere still popular, but they embraced brighter colors
jewelry
and more comical themes. The same went for flowers, now made from plastic resins. They were
cheerful pastel or primary colored clusters hanging from necklaces, earrings and bracelets.

1960’S TOPS, SWEATERS, COATS

Tops, shirts, blouses, and sweaters all took direction from casual
clothing in the 1950s. The primary change was that shirts and
sweaters now fit straight on the body with no emphasis on the bust or
waist. Tops could also be worn untucked, gasp! They hung out over
pants and skirts and grew longer as the decade 1.7 1960's tops
advanced. Necklines also grew higher, back to the modest look of the 1930s.
Big roll collars, round peterpan collars (often in contrasting white), big bows,
and pointed shirt collars called attention to a thin neck and short hair. For
winter wear, a good wool coat was still necessary. The coats narrowed down
and shorten up to fit over new, thinner, clothes. Round collars with big buttons,
flap pockets, geometric prints and maybe a belt kept them looking cute and
fun. They came down to just above the knee so that long lean legs would

I.2 1970’S WOMEN’S FASHION

5
NEAGU MARIA MAGDALENA FASHION
The year 1970 was a year with no predominant look. Walk a block or so on any big city street,
you’d see women wearing Indian block-print bedspread dresses, tight tie-dye T-shirts and hip hugger
jeans, afros, boots that hooked up the front, long calico dresses, rose-printed, maxi coats, and
microminis.” – What We Wore

The 1960s fashion style was still in effect with rebellious hippies and unconventional mods fighting
it out in department stores. Short skirts paired with long coats and long
skirts paired with short vests. The decade couldn’t decide what
direction to take or what past decade to emulate. The mods were
reviving the 20s flapper look with cloche hats and shift dresses. The
hippies turned back to the Victorian age of handmade modest Live-
Off-the-Land peasant clothes. Mature women favored ’40s and ’50s
classics. Seventies fashion was a mish-mash, a bit of everything for
anyone who had an opinion about fashion. The decade that gave us
1.9 Shift dresses disco music and the best parties also bred some pretty iconic fashion.
Yes, we're talking about the 1970s. From flares to floppy hats, the clothes and accessories favoured
during the era don't even make us cringe—which just goes to show how much '70s style influences
what we wear today.

FLARED PANTS AND JEANS High-waisted flares were the

silhouette of the ‘70s—and it’s easy to see why. The cut is ideal for
creating the illusion of legs for days.
PLATFORM HEELS
Sky-high platforms aren't as hard to walk in as you might think,
and while the shoe was popular with women, it was also commonly
1.10 Platform heels
found on the feet of men within the glam rock scene.
BOHO
From peasant skirts to maxi dresses and lace-up sandals, a boho sensibility permeated the
decade, the more cultish your look, the better.
Women’s pants in the 70s had more diversity than the previous two decades combined. Some
were waist high and wide leg while others were hip huggers with only a flared leg. Some were tight

6

cigarette fit, straight leg, or very baggy. Some had cuffs, some didn’t. For most women, wearing
cotton or polyester knit high waisted and wide leg pants in pastel colors paired with a tunic top,
button-down blouse, or snug knit shirt was a daily fashion. Simple and
comfortable, pants dominated most of the 1970s for both day and dressy
evenings.

In the end, comfort and casualness won the 70s fashion battle. All
looks fought it out over the decade adapting the mod style into a less
plastic, simple ease and the hippie look into a tailored chic. Both
turned to the use of color; brights for the mods and earth tones for
the hippies. The idea that 1970s fashion was an expression of one’s
personality replaced the everyone-follow-the-famous trend of the
1.11 Boho
’50s and ’60s. Clothes were made Style
to mix and match with each other as well as across gender
guidelines. Whether the combinations made any sense was another matter. Vogue declared
“There are no rules of the fashion game now. You’re playing it and you make up the game as
you go.”1970’S DRESSES
The mini shift dress, jumper dress, drop waist dress and tunic dress were still trendy dress styles
in the early 70s. Sleeveless jumper dresses were worn over short or long sleeve shirts in winter with
high knee socks. Drop waist shift dresses and button front sheath dresses gave a nod back to the
1920s flapper era. This time they were made of polyester double knits that were stiff enough to
withstand wrinkles and staining. It was the perfect material for the age of low-maintenance fashion
and big bold colors. Many dresses had oversized collars and some started to sport hippie prints in
yellow, green, and orange flowers or paisley swirls.

Colors ran the full spectrum. Jewel tones in fall/winter, pastels, and white in summer. White was an
especially popular color for everything from dresses to hats,
handbags to shoes. Both daytime and evening, especially evening,
turned to white as the hottest color of the ’70s. There were a few
other unique dresses made famous in the 70s although their
influence was not always seen in the mainstream:

1.12 Caftan dress 1

7
NEAGU MARIA MAGDALENA FASHION
Caftan dresses were Grecian inspired and worn with high heels sandals and beads or pearl
necklaces. The caftan became a frequent style of hostess dress. Long, tent shapes with an optional
empire belt and huge kimono sleeves that came in bold colors and big exotic prints were also worn
by many soul and jazz singers.
The granny dress, prairie dress or peasant dress was a mix of hippie meets Edwardian (post-
Victorian era) modesty with a touch of folk art. They were tea or ankle length maxi dresses (or
skirts) in homey prints. They were trimmed in ruffles, lace, and embroidery.

I.3 1980’S WOMEN’S FASHION

HIP-HOP FASHION
Hip-hop music and culture were extremely prevalent in the ‘80s. As such, hip-hop fashion was
also trending, especially in urban areas. Inspired by stars, such as the iconic Salt-N-Pepa trio and
Queen Latifah, hip-hop fashion for women was similar to that for men. Baggy silhouettes and
athletic details characterised the look along with bold and bright
colours and bold patterns. When it came to accessories, sneakers and
snapback caps reigned supreme.

80s Punk Fashion This rebellious look developed in the later years
of the 1980s and represented a dramatic departure from the decade’s
glamorous beginning. Featuring iconic pieces like studded leather
jackets, ripped jeans, band t-shirts, and heavy-duty boots, the punk
1.13 Hip-hop fashion
look was intense and edgy. Even the hair of this subculture was bold and in-your-face. Today, punk
fashion is once again becoming popular.

WORKOUT FASHION When you think of the ‘80s, an image of Jane Fonda in a leotard and leg-
warmers undoubtedly enters your mind. After all, her aerobics
videos were unbelievably popular during the decade and brought
forth a wave of new workout fashion. Matching the decade’s theme
of excess, this workout style featured bold outfits for women. From
high-rise bodysuits and headbands to neon-bright leggings and bike
shorts, ‘80s workout fashion was loud and proud. 1.14 Workout fashion

BIG SHOULDERS
When you think of the ’80s, big shoulders always come to mind. Thanks to the power suiting
trend for women, the ’80s saw shoulders pumped up with extra padding to bold new heights and
widths. Today, big shoulders are an excellent way to add a touch of that unapologetic ’80s attitude
into your 2017 wardrobe. Choose between jackets, blazers, and coats with imposing shoulder
silhouettes to try this trend. Just remember to keep your waist defined with a belt or by buttoning up
to avoid appearing swamped in the fabric.

I.4. 1990S IN FASHION

Fashion in the 1990s was defined by a return to minimalist fashion, in contrast to the more
elaborate and flashy trends of the 1980s. One notable shift was the mainstream adoption of tattoos,
body piercings aside from ear piercing and to a much lesser extent, other forms of body modification
such as branding.
In the early 1990s, several late 1980s fashions remained very stylish among both sexes.
However, the popularity of grunge and alternative rock music helped bring the simple, unkempt
grunge look to the mainstream by 1992. The anti-conformist approach to fashion led to the
popularization of the casual chic look that included T-shirts, jeans, hoodies, and sneakers, a trend
which continued into the 2000s. Additionally, fashion trends throughout the decade recycled styles
from previous decades, notably the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Women's hair in the early 1990s
continued in the big, curly style of the 1980s. High and High sided ponytails continued through most
of the decade, especially when playing sports and at the gym. These were worn with a scrunchie
until the late 1990s when hair ties began to replace scrunchies. Scrunchies are once again popular in
the late 2010s. Bangs remained big throughout the decade, especially the "mall bangs" poofy style
associated with the early 1990s. From 1994 and through 2000s they got smaller and somewhat flatter
and less poofy and laid closer to the forehead.
In the late 1990s, the Bob cut was well-desired, popularized and rejuvenated by Victoria
Beckham of the Spice Girls. This late 90s-style bob cut featured a center, side, or zig-zag parting, as
opposed to the thick bangs of the early 1990s.

CHAPTER II
FASHION TRENDS FROM THE 2000S

2000s fashion is often described as being a global mash up, where trends saw the fusion of
previous vintage styles, global and ethnic clothing (e.g. boho), as well as the fashions of numerous
music-based subcultures. Hip-hop fashion generally was the most popular among young people of
both sexes, followed by the retro inspired indie look later in the decade.

2.1 EMBROIDERED DENIM

Denim pieces clad with appliqués, studs, and other

embellishments were wardrobe staples during the '00s. Today,
embroidery on jean skirts, jackets and pants serves as a nod to
the past and a memorable, one-of-a-kind detail.

2.1 Ponchos
2.2. PONCHOS
The poncho is like an elevated blanket, but less bulky and more shirt-like (except for the fact
that it doesn't have sleeves). Ponchos were, without a doubt, a 2000s mood, but they're a trend we
wouldn't be too mad about if revived.

2.3 WIDE BELTS

No top or dress was complete in the early '00s without the addition of a large wide
belt. They came in shiny plastic options, woven patterns, and everything in between. The
style was even good enough for the red carpet, as evidenced by Kim, who rocked hers at
the Rock & Republic preview party.

2.4 TIERED MINISKIRTSTiered Miniskirts Your school might have had a dress code, so
short tiered skirts like this were a no-no, but on the weekends? All rules were out the window. The
tiered miniskirt was often worn with a camisole or white tank top, which made you feel like the
coolest kid on the block.

2.6 CORAL EVERYTHING

This cheery color was everywhere in the '00s, from nails to lipsticks
and red carpet ensembles. Though it has arguably been replaced with
millennial pink, we wouldn't mind seeing a resurgence of the bold, ever-
flattering hue.

CHAPTER III
WEIRD FASHION TRENDS
No one has got the authority to affront anyone’s fashion trends; in fact fashion trends are
decided according to the thinking, likes and dislikes of the people of that particular place or
community. Conversely, people need to admit that tattooing eyes, wearing Hitler printed t shirts;
trend of facekinies should be measured as an eerie trend. Fashion Designers and artists try to bring
something unique and different; they expect common people to follow those trends. But sometimes
the craze of those designs is not that much effective, rather people find them funny and strange. Here
is a list of such top 10 weirdest fashion trends in the world, such strange styles are listed in the
article.

3.1 HITLER CHIC-THAILAND

Earlier this year, the city of Bangkok has been

invaded by Hitler. If you’re wondering why you haven’t
heard anything about that, it’s because this invasion has
been into the world of fashion. Nowadays, Bangkok is
said to be experiencing a veritable Hitler-mania, with the
image of the infamous German leader appearing in
cartoon form, on T-shirts, sweatshirts, posters, you name
it. Ronald McDonald? Yes, Bangkok has a Hitler 3.1 Hitlerized pandas version
of him in as well, together with Hitlerized pandas and even the Teletubbies. Foreign correspondents
explain that this modern trend can mostly be chalked up to ignorance rather than underlying fascist
tendencies of the young people of Thailand, no different than the treasure trove of ethnic and
homophobic slurs that is a typical internet message board here in the West. It appears that no matter
where you go, kids are just always going to be stupid, and while we’re on the topic.
3.2 SOUTH AFRICAN METAL HEADS, BOUTSWANA

attracting audience members of African descent. Lately though, classic, old-school metal fashion

cities and small
metal headsvillages,

the Botswanian metal heads, clad in an

entire cow’s worth of black leather, create a peculiar sight in the country known
primarily for its wildlife parks. To them—as the Southern African metal
warriors explain—metal music and the culture surrounding it is all about power,
strength and freedom, which means that they thankfully haven’t discovered
Korn yet. It’s also why many of them give themselves nicknames like Demon or
Gun smoke well, THAT and no one ever having the guts to call them out on it.
3.3. MEGGING, ALL OVER THE WORLD

Trends for male in Fashion World are not much less than woman, an example for this is the
“meggings"- male correspondent to leggings which is highly in trend into the lanes of Tokyo, Paris,
London and New York. Initially the introduction
of leggings in female fashion world was a hot
button topic, and now this trend is extended for
the males too. Printed meggings are very popular
among the dancers, choreographers, fashion
designers and many more such cool
professionals. According to Lindsay Lohan
leggings are versatile, awesome and leopard
printed leggings are amazing and so are the meggings for men. 3.3"Meggings"

3.4 ELF BOOT, MEXICO

It is a part of the Elven Outfit. These boots are long,

pointy and sort of asinine looking, and were in trend in
Mexico. Because of this the cowboy boots with stretched tips
again came in fashion among the young generation of
southern Mexico. It is kind of a trend when the male dress up
to get interest of females, but at the end becomes a reason to
3.4 Elf boots
laugh at. It is really a bombshell trend, then also can be seen
in the feet of TV actors, stage showers etc.

3.5 GOTHIC LOLITAS, JAPAN

Not to be confused with the Western meaning of the term, the

Japanese “Lolita" is an extremely broad fashion subculture that
emphasizes cute and stylish Victorian-era clothes. It’s “Gothic" sub-
style, probably the most famous of the group, is in turn all about darker,
gothic aesthetics which in the hands of misinformed Japanese teens
basically boils down to “faux-vampire fashion as understood by a 15-
year-old." Also: “umbrellas." As in, every other picture of a Gothic
Lolita on GIS shows them holding an umbrella because without one 3.5 Girl which has Lolitas
they would all apparently look silly. Gothic style

3.6 EYE EWERLY, NETHERLANDS

You know what body part often gets

overlooked in the world of fashion? The eyes. Sure,
you can paint around them or change their color
with contact lenses, etc., but how often do you see
some actual, serious fashion being done on the eye
itself? Almost never, because that is a terrible,
terrible idea.3.6 Eye the
Well, jewelry
Dutch seem to disagree. A
new technique that allows small studs made from precious metals to be inserted into the eye
was developed more than 8 years ago in Rotterdam, giving teenage girls everywhere an
alternative to dating black guys to anger their parents. The Dutch claim that the procedure is
perfectly harmless, while eye specialists argue that it is insane; also: potentially dangerous.
But, come on, what is a little eye bleeding or risk of impaired vision when you get to wear a
tiny, near-invisible heart or half moon in your peeper? Don’t answer that. But while we’re on
the topic of eye-related horrible ideas.3.7 FAKEKINI, CHINA

Sometimes new trends in the Fashion world arise due to the needs of the people, an example
for this is the introduction of “Facekini". A simple way to
keep away from the harmful rays of Sun is to avoid going
out, or to put on a good quality sunscreen. But the
residents of China found a new way to protect themselves
by wearing face-kini, according to name it is a shielding
head mask wore by the beach-goers.

3.8. MANBA, JAPAN

Japan keeps coming in light, while talking about some

peculiar fashion trends. Another example of unusual trends is
the Manba. It is a craze very common among the young girls
of Japan, who normally date men who are style crazy. Manba
is a little varied form of the very famous Ganguro culture
which basically accentuates strong makeup and dark
complexion. Girls following the Manba trend normally coat

their complete face with deep and dark brown, with two
circular marks of white color around their eyes and silver light colored hair along with wishy-washy
makeup and dazzling attire.

3.9 EYE TATTOTS, CANADA

Being an intense practice, people go for eye tattooing for

enhancing their aesthetic appearance and the improvement
of vision. In this the white part that is cornea of the eye is
tattooed. It is medically prescribed method for the persons
with scratch marked eye tissues. There are various methods
of tattooing of eye, also various options for the success and
medical safety of the procedure exists. Tattooing of eye is
3.9 Eye tattoo practice from approximately thousands of years and is now
again in trend in Canada. In this process the dye/ink in inserted in the white portion that is Cornea of
the eye using some syringes and injections and designs are made.

3.10 BAGEL HEADS, JAPAN

16
NEAGU MARIA MAGDALENA FASHION

Getting injected a saline into the forehead to get a bagel/doughnut type

shape on forehead is not an easy task. Being such a painful job to get such
shapes, people of Japan promoted the trend called as “Bagel head". It is a kind
of Body modification technique initiated in Canada and highly encouraged by
the Japan’s Fashion World. The process is basically a swelling distortion caused
by the saline drip. Media channels ambiguously asserted it as “Japan trend".
People here get this done on their forehead during special occasions like
subversive fetish gatherings. For this, the person’s forehead is to be injected by
a medical 300-400cc saline for about duration of 2 hours, and to change the
designs the swelled part is sometimes given a down turn at the center.
