Term Definition
Political, Social and ethical Ethics can be seen as the science that studies moral. Means the issues that occur due to changes in
issues the information systems in the social and political scope. Problems that affect the politics way and
the society, like in the case study the problem of using private information of social networks for
political advertising.
Big data Manage data sets of big dimension, it might refer to relational databases and also non relational
databases. Process of storing, analyzing and manage data of high dimensions. Manages data of
different types like text, image, files, movies, etc…
Data quality and analysis Assure data is complied with legal terms, use of data in order to provide better life quality,
organizing the information according to the law that can be used to help society in different forms.
NORA uses data analysis in order to provide safety and to help law enforcement among other
activities.
Personal information Information about a person that can be private or public, data related to a certain individual like in
example academic titles, profession and other information like videos that are referred to a certain
person. This data should be compliant with the law.
Ethical Principles Set of moral rules that organizes society. It has a philosophical base and looks to achieve what is
morally correct. Allows to set moral principles that manages individuals and society.
Law systems Allows to define the rights and the penalties in several contexts. In order to interpret correctly and
being able to apply the law. Regulates the relations between individuals and societies, looks to
achieve protection of data, safety, and many other principles to discipline the society.
Information / Property rights Can be seen as the process of providing access to someone or to some organization of information
or material and immaterial things. How a resource is enforced socially. The privileges that
someone or an organization has towards a resource.
Privacy controls Part of the application that allows users to manage their information, allowing to have privacy,
mentioning that they do not wish to share certain information. Processes of protecting and
respecting the privacy of the information of an individual or organization.
Quality of life Obtaining standards that allow life to be better, to achieve equity, fairness, provided access

correctly and legally and set correct boundaries. Aims to the improvement in many areas and
contexts like safety, human rights respect, law enforcement, among many others... Provide better

Information technology and Use of systems to obtain information, optimize, analyse correctly. Includes the software, hardware
systems and other related material to treat data. Can be seen as lines of code that develop programs that
allow to store data, process it effectively and facilitate life. Includes computers and networks that
maximize efficiency and makes it easier for users to achieve their objectives.
Third party companies Companies that are not directly involved in the process between two individuals or companies. A
person or company that is not one of the two principals involved. Can be seen has companies that
are related to the activity but are not directly involved. Like Cambridge Analytics in the case study.
Profiling Use of associating information from several sources and associate it to one individual. Associate to
a person several characteristics and analysing, like historical events in order to obtain a efficient
description.

The case study mentions Facebook that operates in many countries and has to be coherent with several data protection laws like the
GDRP, among others. The control of Facebook on personal and private information is not achieved efficiently, cases have been showed
that third party companies like Cambridge analytics and Russian intelligence via softwares and developers were able to create softbots, ,
fake accounts manage the advertisement display and insert lots of fake information into the system. Due to the laws of some countries
Facebook provides the historical data of a user, most of the profit of Facebook comes from advertisement and also gaming, there has been
discussions about the legal terms and the privacy control options of Facebook, since this platform aims to reach costumers and provide
the suitable advertisements among many other functionalities. It is a new company that has gowned in a very high rhythm. In its design
and management it allows developers access to certain things like private information and information about users and also the friends of
this user. It uses technologies like facial recognition that should respect the data privacies, and the option of tagging most be in
compliance. It also has different types of agreements with different types of companies in terms of access to data which might be shared
according to what is defined. Third party companies may use people`s information and might be protected or correctly legislated and
complied. Technologies like big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence must be regulated and checked in order to not prejudice
individuals, in the book there are many examples how the misuse of big data can affect people, like obtaining access to personal
information in order to be profitable. The book also mention examples like faulty ignition switches among other cases that should be
prevented. Privacy policies should be respected and the correct use of prediction systems should be applied.
Ethical, political and social issues must be complied with data quality analysis like NORA to monitor and manage information like
incidents and telephone records to provide security among other advantages and to check in ethical terms the current situations using
information systems. There is a common use of profiling where an individual is well described based on historical data, previous events,
etc... Which allows to provide almost accurate information and make more reliable predictions. The information and property rights
should be assured to be respected in order to provide a higher quality of life and also a higher quality of the information systems. The
privacy controls should be more clear and easy to use in order to protect individual’s rights. Law systems like GDPR and FIP allow to
apply ethical principles. It should facilitate the process of accountability assigning the responsible for each situation in order to comply
with international treaties and be monitored by international institutions like Interpol. Liability should be implemented in order to help
people that were affected by strategies of data manipulation and recover their losses. There should be an ethical analysis, describing
correctly the facts, clear definition of the conflict identify the individuals and companies involved as well as their options and
consequences. The codes of conduct should be correctly regulated and the ethical principles respected. Spyware, use of cookies for
tracking and other methodologies should be better defined and prevented and the property rights like patents should be respected.
Information systems may allow the increase of quality of life, maintaining boundaries, providing more equity and justice, reducing
vulnerability, providing the correct access regulated
